Liberal reluctance to confront this sheer horror is the result, I think, of a deep reticence about some furtive concept of "race." It is subconsciously assumed that a critique of political Islam is an attack on people with brown skins. One notes in passing that any such concession implicitly denies or negates Islam's claim to be a universal religion.

honestly and truly not one of Christopher's better pieces of writing. I am a fan of his but this story is haphazard to say the least. It reads like it was hastily written in a very uncomfortable departure lounge.

He needs to go home for a little bit and reconnect with what he's writing about. It's a unique situation in Britain with what is going on there and I don't truly believe you can feel that sitting in Washington waiting for your next "straight to youtube" TV appearance.

So the only acceptable reaction to a terrorist attack on home soil is to run around with your hands in the air and then spend the rest of your days living in fear?

From what I have observed that's just not how things are done in the UK. YMMV.

I'm simply pointing out that these latest attempts failed and have achieved virtually nothing - there has been no disruption and no casualties....:hmm:

Where do you get that from? THEY FAILED - see above - no disruption no casualties - many arrests - seems like we're doing a lot!

Yup - we have long experience of dealing with terrorists!

The IRA never stopped me going to work in central London and these latest attempts are even less successful!!

and yet some people argue that the attempted attacks on English cities like Glasgow :rolleyes: are absolutely NOT connected with our support for the war in Iraq... and you'd be a fool and a liberal to make that connection

but why is England being attacked and not, say, Sweden, New Zealand or the Netherlands? any ideas, burk?

remember when stores in places in the middle of nowhere like Idaho & South Dakota started selling out of tinned food, plastic bags and duct tape in the aftermath of 911? people thousands of miles away from anywhere who had no reason to get scared started getting scared... and doing scared-person things... like being less critical of their government, and worrying about an imminent Al Qaeda chemical attack on their little town

it just wouldn't happen in the UK... getting scared of a barely known enemy isn't especially British... remember in the aftermath of the cold war in the time before fear of Osama and co, between about 1994 and 2001? there was a massive cultural interest in aliens & outer space and stuff like that... the X files, Roswell, alien abduction etc... what about the theory that some cultures seem to need a common boogie man to be scared of, and if we don't have one, we'll invent one?

keeping people scared certainly seems to benefit some people, and it's not just duct tape salesmen

Although I agree it's a factor - I think there's also the fact that many British citizens have relatives in Pakistan and so it is difficult to separate legitimate family visits, from training /indoctrination traffic to/from the Pakistan/Afghan border....:hmm:

So - while a group of young Muslims travelling between New Zealand or Sweden and Pakistan would stand out like a sore thumb ...it's not so "cut and dried" with UK to Pakistan and vice versa...:hmm:

Many years ago I studied American Literature and one of the lecturers was even a US author/editor - anyway - they characterised late 20th Century US as the "Literature of Paranoia" !! :eyebrow:
