I think saying "I don't like it" and "I can do better" are two completely different comments-not one in the same. Personal opinion does not require any validation(being a pro, having a video, international recognition,. etc.). Making claims that you can do "better" is a far sticker proposition...

That said, I just take the original clip for what it is-an exercise for an instructional video.

I did enjoy the other videos, guys. Thanks for posting them!

Ahhh, we have a communication breakdown.

I keep forgetting that the Australian sense of humour doesn't translate very well to, well, everyone else. Us Aussies, when someone does something flashy and showy, we bag it, even if we're a little impressed by it. E.g your mate shows up in a brand new V8 road monster with everything going on, us Aussies will say:

"Hey mate, what's that piece of crap you're driving"

So Remo and I aren't knocking Tetsuo - call it a backhanded compliment. The boy can play. And for my part, I haven't seen the other vids of him yet, but I'm guessing that if his finger skills are as good as as slap - he will most undoubtedly rock.

As for bitter? Not a chance. I used to be able to slap, but I found it to be a mechanical exercise with no musicality whatsoever. Why make a perfectly good bass sound stupid was my opinion. So I stopped. I can't now because it is technically demanding and without practice slapping is hard. And I don't intend to practice something I don't like in the first place.

So, IMNSHO - slapping sux. It's a gimmick. A solo piece. A waste of time. I just don't like it, period.

As for not wanting the likes of me at a gig - wrong. Dead wrong. Any of you guys that get up there and give it some serious groovin' pocket action - I'll be the guy at the bar, nodding his head and waiting with a beer for you at the end of the set. But if you break out into some slap solo - I'll drink that beer myself and head somewhere else.

So apologies to those who missed my sense of humour, apologies to those who think slapping rox (to each their own), and to those who thought I dissed Tetsuo (and by extension the hall of fame slappin' bass players) - read my posts again.

What a complete dog turd of a car

Back in the day, my gigmobile was a 1.2l 1977 Mazda 323. My lawnmower has more pulling power, but it once carried 40 slabs* - dead serious. It always got my rig home in one piece, and that's what really matters.

Of course, my car got complimented all the time. Yep, it was a real piece of crap.

Wow, that vid brings back memories. A keyboard player I was working with in 90, turned me on to them. Hope I spell this right , but " Ichini" was one of my favorite songs. That bass playing was awesome. most bass players that rag on Tetsuo most likely cant do what he can do and will be the first to also say that they really dont care to do it( CAUSE THEY CANT). I play lefty strung righty and its limiting especially when it comes to slap/funk style bass, but I LOVE it. Any Kieth Horne or Jimmy Haslip vids of them funkin out? Jauqo, love your vid.Absolutely amazing.

You're completely right - I was trying to dig my way out, because I'd been taken the wrong way. My own fault for thinking people would get my sense of humour (my ref to Remo was I got the feeling he was on the same line). Oh well, I gave it a shot...

Here's where the problem is most of the time. You found slap to be mechanical and non musical? That's technique's fault, it's yours.

I was having a phone conversation once with a very well known Bassist(who is an incredible player and tours with a lot of top artist)and he was telling me about an anonymous E-mail he got once where the sender was dogging him out in a very very horrific way it kind of bummed my friend out but he got over it and he's still going strong.

To put it simply, I am not impressed by virtuosity alone. There has to be a holistic approach, a je ne sais quoi per say that I don't get from this guy in either video. Musical and technical appreciation is completely arbitrary and personally goes way beyond technical speed, bio, if you get paid, if there are “you tube” video’s of you on the net etc etc... If these qualifiers are enough for you to go "wow" then good for you.

I am not knocking his timing (which is fine).. but playing in the pocket goes a long way beyond "landing on the one" and keeping in time.

This goes back to my point above re. a HOLISTIC APPROACH to the instrument which is NOT DEMONSTRATED in either video.

slap bass has it's merits.. it makes getting gigs for real bass players much easier.
