There's not one Bass player out here that has not been dogged but the thing I find interesting most of the nay sayers usually can't really do any better.There really is a great difference in constructive criticism and out right negativity and yes opinions are just that but again we should respectively get the chance to see/hear something from the out right critics,I think it may give some of us a better understading of why they have the views they have.

people who are quick to put down a musician is more likely not able to do half of what that player is able to do in his sleep! If a guy can play, he can play, whether one likes slap or not. Slap is a viable way of expressing oneself on the bass.
so let the haters hate.

It's completely legitimate for anyone to state that they like or do not like anything. It is not legitimate for anyone to state that a certain style of playing is "bad", or "uncool", except to them. Stating that a certain playing technique is injurous to the overall art of bass playing is right out.

Let's face it, most of the cats who sharply criticize any style of playing can't play it with proficiency. I have no respect for such criticism from unqualified critics. If someone is capable of playing like Tetsuo but chooses not to, for any reason or no reason, rock on my brother and bring your opinions any time. For the rest of us, "I don't like it" is as far as we are entitled to go.

So I can't go in to detail about why I don't like a certain dish because I'm not a chef?

Certainly you can. But you cannot state that the dish is "badly prepared" simply because you personally don't like it - unless you are a chef, in which case the basis for your criticism of the dish would probably be more objective.

I'm just not sure where the notion that you have to be on the level of skill (or even be in the same field) in order to validate your criticixm on a subject. I'm sure George Duke can't slap a bass at all, but I would not discredit his criticism of the clip. Nor would I a music critic who can't play an instrument at all.

The music critic who cannot play any instrument can state that he does not like the music with credibility. If he states that the music is poorly delivered, does not fit the prescription to a certain style, or fails to adhere to some objective standard of measurement, and therefore is "bad" in a sense beyond his personal taste, he cannot do so with credibility unless he refers to someone else's (who is credible) standard of measurement in doing so.

I would probably lend credence to George Duke's opinion in this case because he possesses a body of work that is deep enough, and closely enough related to this video. In contrast, despite his body of work in music, I would not consider his opinion of the chef's dish (from your original post) to be anything beyond opinion.

Again folks, it's fine to have an opinion but a statement like 'slap is not cool...not cool!'...........what is that?? I totally hear the cats who say they can't feel a groove or his slapping doesn't move them! I hear ya! Some music moves some folks and does nothing for other folks! But face it, there are many many styles of bass playing, all which are legitimate! Hell, I dislike bass played with a pick but I don't feel it's not a legitimate style of bass playing! But how the hell can a style of playing be 'not cool'?

Hmm, I find you quite wrong actually, and for some reason I take offense to your comment about flea. You do not have the right to name someone talentless, everyone has his or her own talent, and you can't deny them that.

I also enjoy slap, it's one technique that out instrument can put out, and I feel that every instrument can be played differently to put out a different technique, so saying that slap is bad, is saying that picking is bad, or tapping is bad, or fingerstyle is bad, however, you have the right to your own view.

I like the bass too though, and I had the great opportunity to have a lesson from a bass player from Japan who was awarded the "Greatest Bass Player in Japan" award or something of that sort, and he also slapped, so there has to be something to that technique, or else it wouldn't be popular.

Well, now I hate you!! You've turned to the dark side!! LOL! It's all good! There are some really good 'pick' players! I just don't like to admit it! That is an interesting technique though! It looks like you're still working it out but it is innovative and that is 'cool'!

In that vid I was just really focused on showing the guy that was interested the vey basics of it but like most things that musicians work on I'll be at it for a life time.
