I think like anything it needs to be done properly and in the correct context.

Doing something for the sake of something is silly and usually doesn't lead to a good tune.

I've got some "tunes" that I whipped up mainly as an exercise for a technique I was learning. But I'd never actually make & release a song based on just a technique. Unless someone offered lots of money. I have zero problems with selling out :)

A non-musical example: The Matrix II (and other movies). Yes. We know you can do that cool thing where you freeze the frame and rotate around. We saw it the first time and the first 98 times in the second. Please stop. Now.

Maybe it's me, but I neverstood the concept that all things bass must be worshipped. Or that played-out insult, "If you don't like it than you don't understand it/you can't do it." So? I don't need to be able to outplay Victor Wooten or Jaco Pastorius to know that dislike their music. It might move someone else, but it only moves me to cd player to shut it off. Advanced playing is simply that, advanced, not better by default. I'll take a player who's style/tone I enjoy over a player with impressive chops anyday.

The mudslinging on both sides should stop, agree to disagree and drop the issue.

It's okay if you don't like a particular style of playing but to dismiss an advanced player like Tetsuo, based on one aspect of his playing is wrong! Nobody is worshipping the guy! Just appreciating what he can do is all! He may not be an innovator but he's damn good! Just because a player is advanced does not mean he cannot play simple root 8th notes all night long. Secondly, I believe that video is from an instructional vid of some sort and he's just demonstrating a skill! It's not a 'song'! Dude's got a impressive catalog so it must mean he can play a little. Do some research and see what else he can do. And lastly, slap is a major part of bass playing and it ain't going away anytime soon so please get over it already!

You're wasting your time...there are some people who just have to be negative. It's quite sad.

People should play what they like.

If I don't like a particular kind of music I just won't listen to it, but I don't feel that it is my job to cast judgement on the people playing that music.

That clip with Akira Jimbo isn't too shabby. I don't think his groove is quite nasty enough for my taste, though. You can dance to a Larry Graham groove, this guy, not so much. I respect him though. Talented, but not my style of playing.

It sums it all up though. Obviously, he is doing something that none of us are. He's well-known and paid. We all have nothing better to do than sit on our asses at home on this website (Which I love, don't get me wrong) and criticize other bass players left and right!

Constructive Criticism would be okay, but com'on guys. Lighten up. He's doing what he does best. Play Bass. Like all of us.

this thread alone, is one of the main reasons, that you contiue to do blues,and top 40 gigs,........the common person can understand these genres,but once you do this type of playing (especially bass players and drummers) or wankery as some refer it to,then most likely you'll get hammered !...play for regular folks,and try to get paid whether you suck or not,but do not play for musicians because you'll be critique of the highest order and won't get one damn dime..........
