That Dubstep Wobbbbbbbbble.

Haven't read the whole thread but has anyone suggested doing de-tuned effects with a fretless bass yet? That's what I used to use, til I sold it.

The problem with that is triggering the second oscillator, in tune. One wacky workaround would be to use an SYB or BSY with a fretless, and in parallel with another oscillator; trigger the SYB with a detuned note and 'hold' while quickly switching the other oscillator into the chain and 'playing' it...

With the Freqbox, Ive found that I can detune it as well as any phaser/chorus/flanger/etc by using its onboard controls and some lfo's; I've only finished two presets, but I think with a few presets made that cater to different area's of the neck (accomodate hard sync) and different modulation levels, I can get a different kind of wobble, a detune wobble that changes with certain notes, and is not filter based.

This second idea is still just a brainstorm that Im going to partially test this evening; for the rest I'll need the MP201's new firmware release, and a 2nd Freqbox, because the new firmware has the Freqbox and Ringmod scaled with pitch/cv, 14-bit pitch bend which you can set from 1-12 semitones, etc... So im thinking that I'll 'play' one Freqbox hard sync'd and in tune (right now using a pollyanna for the square) and 'play' the Sawtooth Freqbox with hard sync off and use the Footpedal to move through notes (my audio would trigger the freqbox, but with harde sync off, it will only output the Freq I have the footpedal set to), and have it detuned over an octaves range or so from heel-toe, starting from which even detuned note I need for the song; this is someone limited, and there are other ways Im thinking of doing this with this gear, but if you take this basic principle I think you can see where Im going with it. My mind is constantly blown by moogerfoogers and compatible gear... the possibilities are endless!

Another thing Im looking forward to, regarding the MP201 firmware release, is playing the oscillators with a MIDI controller (they're at the beginning of my chain anyway..) and the HADSR loop... hot damn!... and Volta or Silent way for cv control of the freqbox, and...and... im broke so it doesn't matter!:help::smug:
 
i'm currently using my octavius squeezer's LFO to wobble. richard cartwright was kind enough to send me a spreadsheet on the LFO rates and its corresponding bpm. can't lock it via cv or midi, but i guess it'll have to do at the moment.

maybe i shd try using my pitchfactor's harmodulator to try n midi sync the LFO too.

I've started designing digital effects after concluding that, to do these dubstep sounds right with analog tech requires way too much circuitry and compromise. So, so far what I'm thinking is this:

2 independent pitch-tracking oscillators: sine, saw, square, and pulse wave forms for each. Oscillators can be tuned independently, so they can be detuned slightly (one up and one down, for example) from your clean note, or they can be an octave down an two octaves up, whatever. Continuous frequency control, not stepped.

FM synthesis: modulate frequency of oscillator 1 with oscillator 2 for gigantic FM basses. Also allows vibrato that slows and speeds with higher/lower pitches (by turning one OSC down to LFO range)

Maybe pulse width modulation

LFO-controlled filters of course (probably multiple filters each with separate LFOs). Also allows multiple LFOs to combine to control a single filter, which makes for some very complex and interesting sounds.

The really difficult part is allowing for complex control while maintaining reasonably simple controls. Anybody have any thoughts on what else your dream dubstep pedal would have? The sky is pretty much the limit here in terms of what's possible.

One thing I was wondering is this: do you want the output dynamics to be the same as input dynamics, or would you want the output compressed? One of the things that makes a bass sound synthy to me, besides the obvious stuff, is that synth basses usually don't have a bass guitar-like decay, and a lot of the fatness comes from the sustain.
