Does Ruby = Candy Apple Red?? I have an '85 that is essentially CAR. Don't know what Rickenbacker called it though.

Ric's "Ruby" is a bright metallic red w/ sparkles, as played by
Bruce Foxton in the early Jam (also one of the rarer colors to
come across)-
Ric's "BurgandyGlo" is the see-thru red finish, which can appear several different shades of red, easiest to tell on the
4001s as you can see the "skunk stripe" through the finish,
as played by Cliff Burton in the early Metallica years-

Ric also had a solid red (an ugly lipstick red, IMO) which
appeared in the 80's, usually w/ black trim & hardware,
and on the "Red Neck" model.

I think that we can conclude that almost every serious bassist that can get his/her hands on one has used and/or owned one at some point. They are THE best in my opinion, and even if you aren't a prog guy that loves the "stereotypical"/"Traditional" Ric tone that we are trying to think about divergence from in this thread, you can't help but still love them. They are quick fingerstyle. They are lightning with a pick. They are made with the top most quality. They ARE versatile. I think we've proved that with this thread. They are just awesome. Aw man....thinking about them has started my GAS up again!!! I WANT A RICKENBACKER!!!!

Cool, thought so. That's what I have, an '85. It has the thinnest neck (front to back) on a Ric that I have ever held. Didn't really know it was rare, although I have only seen one other, on Ebay a few months ago.

They ARE versatile. I think we've proved that with this thread.

That has been a bit of a revelation for me in recent months.

Been using mine in a couple of blues bands in recent months and having a blast with it.

I had used it years ago with a pick in a "garage pop" band, and it was great for that. It's why I bought it in fact.

I had never thought to use it in a blues band; but I just felt like shaking things up for some reason. Mine didn't come with the bridge pickup cap, but I added it, and a mini toggle to bypass the cap if so desired (I use it with cap "in" 90% of the time I'd say - just sounds more "Ric" that way). So between the tone controls, cap bypass, pick/fingers, and moving around where I pluck the strings, I have all sorts of tones at my disposal - really quite a bit of fun.

And, it ALWAYS gets at least one comment from somebody at a gig.

(But sounded awesome through his Hiwatt rig!)

Bruce Foxton's first was an Ibanez copy, Supposedly the
first Jam album was recorded with this "Rickenfaker"
(That "In The City" tone was from a fake? THE HORROR!!!)

Jerry only from the misfits used to play a black ric that he later customized(ruined) with a custom pickguard and stuff.
Kira from black flag also played a ric, but i don't know for how long i've just seen the ric in a couple of photos.
