The 2008 Stanley Cup Playoff Thread

First, to the Pens fans here, thanks for keeping it classy, it was a pleasure to discuss the game and have it actually be enjoyable and not a flamefest like happens in so many other places. MJ5150, you're a credit to Pens fans, and it was great to chat with you. For the other Wings fans, I hope you enjoyed the season as much as I did. The chocolatier in town is going to make a replica Stanley Cup for a party I'm having after the last day of school and I'll post a pic of it.

The game: Wings killing an early 5 on 3 was huge. The Wings popping the early goal to get the lead was key, going up 2-0 was bigger. The trickle-in goal, while unfortunate for Fleury was, in some ways to me, not unexpected. Fleury played a HUGE game in game 5, and the Wings were due to get a break with an ugly goal, especially considering the own-goal by Kronwall. Sometimes the ugly goals even out over time, if not necessarily in the same series. My mother called me about it and was razzing me about it (my Dad is a HUGE Flyers fan and he was a bit bitter, plus he loves to bust my nards about hockey when he can).

The second Pens goal as mentioned... the stick being slashed out of Lilja's hand should have been a penalty, effectively it was a 5 on 3. Admittedly, my first response when I saw the stick fly and didn't notice the slash was one of my typical $#*@%&# Lilja outbursts since he's prone to inopportune screwups. When I saw the slash, I just turned to my wife and she said "That should have been a penalty, shouldn't it?" She's picked up a lot this year.

The end of the game. Gee, is Hossa a UFA or what? He really brought it this playoff season, and is going to get paid and paid well come July 1. The last second drama was fitting, though Datsyuk was blatantly hauled down and it should have been called so it wouldn't have mattered anyway. That said, I'm glad it wasn't and no goal was scored so it was decided by the players. This Pens team had a great never say die attitude. IF (and it's a big IF with the salary cap) this Pens team can stay together, they will be dominating the East for a few years. I stand by my comparison to the 1983 Oilers even more now. One difference: The 1983 Oilers needed 4 Finals losses to figure it out. The 2008 Pens got it after 2. If they stay together, they have the potential for a dynasty in the East. Though the Wings have the same potential in the West. Personally, I'd be more than up for a rematch next year (and 2010, 2011, etc...).

It sounded like there was a "Crosby" chant when Hank was awarded the Conn Smythe. Low class by the fans in the arena, but not unexpected. I completely agree with supporting your own hometown heroes, but have some respect for the champs (and yes, I'd have said the same thing if it was in Detroit and Crosby won it and Wings fans started a chant in the Joe... oh wait, they wouldn't ;) ). Sid had a heck of a season, and a great playoffs. IMHO, Fleury was the most valuable player for the Pens during the playoffs. Seeing Lidstrom get the Cup was just a great thing - the guy has always been a class act, and this was evidenced by his handing the Cup off to Dallas Drake. 1009 regular season games over 16 seasons, and the guy gave his body every night for the good of the team, whether it was a preseason, regular season, or playoff game. I've got a feeling he's going to retire on top and enjoy a well deserved rest.

As far as the coverage... the coverage on VS. was terrible. The loss of Bill Clement in the studio was huge. While I don't know the particulars of his departure, I can't help but think the low quality had a big reason for his going. The bias of the coverage towards Pittsburgh (no Joe-Vision, no bar shots compared to what was shown in Pittsburgh), was a bit less than cool in my book. Compare that to what CBC did with the Dan Cleary angle (1st Newfoundlander to win the Cup) as well as the every Pens check was a "great hit" and every Wings hit should have been a penalty comments from most of the NBC announcers (though Maguire did accurately call the Stuart hit clean). Milbury annoyed me long before VS. entered the picture, and Maguire is hit and miss. The other guy they had was, imho one of the worst hockey announcers I've seen.

Overall, this series tightened up a LOT more than people expected after the 1st two games, and I give the Pens a lot of credit for that. Wings win in six (hrm... sounds familiar ;) ) but it was a closer six than expected after the first two games. Hopefully it'll springboard hockey to bigger and better things as far as broadcasting. Hrm... maybe VS. should hire the talkbass hockey crew to do commentary -it'd be a huge improvement over what they have now :bassist:

If Pens had been allowed to equalize with the non-calls during their attack in the last minute, there would have been blood in my house.

In the first period especially I understood much more why Wings fans are so nervous of Lilja...

I think Pens fans in the arena were chanting for Fleury for the Conn Smythe.

I could understand the Fleury, but again, it's a matter of respect imho. The game transcends any team :)

I'll refrain from my Lilja rants. He's a UFA and I don't think he'll be back - Ericcson, Meech, or Quincey could fill his spot easily.

Great game, but not as exciting as the last one. Everything was a little slower. Technically better hockey, but it doesn't leave you on the edge of your seat.

Through the first period, the penguins seemed weak, but picked it up very nicely after that. Bummer about Fleury and that goal, but it makes him seem human... after that last game, I was sure he was a goal tending robot from the future. Seriously, he's the most important player on that team.

As for the announcers, all I can say is that bald headed guy is a total wanker, and has no business being there.

Also, did anyone else catch themselves thinking "Who the &%^$ is Dodge Journey?!"

I don't suppose you guys have access to CBC in the US, eh?
That's by far the best source of hockey play by play. Bob Cole is a legend (he's also a world class *******, but we'll let that slide :D).

Not here in Northeast PA. Sometimes they'll have it on the Center Ice package, but it's up to the Center Ice people. I'd prefer to have either CBC or the home Wings feed where possible since at least it'll be good play by play. Some of the announcers make me want to reach through the screen and do not so nice things to them (I'm talking to YOU Terry Crisp!) CBC is THE standard for hockey coverage, and I'm always thrilled when that's the feed I get to watch.

Most cable packages in the D have CBC, and I watched most of the game on the CBC. I switched to NBC for the post game coverage, because our local NBC affiliate had Mickey Redmond on the coverage for the post game. I personally love the way Ken Kal and Redmond call the game on Radio better then any of them. Redmond is not a homer, if someone makes a mental error he'll call it and he really knows the game.

As far as the Pens, Signing Hosa is not going to be easy, he is a big contract guy. The RW didn't go after him at the deadline, because they knew they couldn't re-sign him, and would have still had to give up some great young prospects to get him. They also saw the development of Franzein coming. The problem is the Pens have several big contracts coming up in the next few years. The new salary cap makes it very hard to keep a bunch of star early draft choice kinds of guys. In the next two years the Pens are going to have to sign Hosa (a 6 million dollar man), Roberts, Orpik, Laraque, Malone, Rutuu, and Fluerry becomes a RFA on 7/1, a year later it's Malkin, and Staal. The Pens are at 34 million, and the cap is about 46 million. It doesn't take a math major to realize that Malkin and Fluerry alone could easily eat up their remaining cap space. For the Red Wings the UFA's are Stuart, Liija, Hasek, and Chellios. The have one big contract coming and thats Zettenberg two years from now.

Great analysis. Redmond and Kal do a PHENOMENAL job. HUGE +1 for Mick calling it down the middle, ripping the Wings when called for. It's quite entertaining.

As far as the FA stuff, great recap on the situations. Stuart will take a discount to stay in Detroit. Lilja and Hasek are gone. Chelios will stay cheaply if they want him. I don't see a huge splash in the FA market this year, as the Wings will want to save the space to lock up Hank to a very long term deal, and they'll likely offer Franzen term to save a little cash. For the Pens, Orpik and Malone raised their stock significantly this playoffs and Fleury set himself up for big bucks. If I'm the Pens I'm tempted to sign Hossa long term and ditch Malkin, but you have to wonder if Hossa's effort was Jose Theodore contract year play part 2.

That is the best broadcast, by far. At my house, however, we don't have cable (personal choice. I need to practice more!) Hell, we don't even have an antenna. So the only station I get clearly is NBC.

It doesn't bother me much, actually. I rather enjoy going to the bar to catch a game! :D

The scary thing about that, is Malkin is all up-side and he played fairly well in game 6. Remember A lot of Wings fans were against locking up Datsuk, because he hadn't had a good playoff series. One of the reasons the Wings gave up on Federov was, they couldn't afford him with Zetterberg and Datsuk. What if Malkin who is real young becomes a Superstar? He certainly has the tools. The Pens can not afford Malkin, Hossa and Fluery along with Crosby. That would leave them about 8-12 million to fill the rest of their slots! But wouldn't it make more sense to seal up a younger Malkin then to tie up big cap space with Hosa?

It really makes you appreciate the job Holland has done, avoiding any foreseeable cap issues for about the next five years. I think the Wings biggest issue, is how much longer does Lindstrom play? He's signed for a couple of more years, but he always seems to talk about retiring to Sweden. Chellios said last night he wants to play next year, and he's not going anywhere. Hasek, said all the right things last night, he won't ask for big money, although Newsome should be an adequate backup. The Wings are suppose to have a hot shot Swede goalie in the Minors, but they want him to play one more season for prep. They also have some good young players in the pipeline. They'll definitely be in the mix again next year if they stay healthy. I suspect Franzein is on his way to Stardom, But the league is a lot more even with the cap. So no one's going to run away. 4 Cups in 11 years ain't bad though. If only they'd win ONE at home.

if the Penguins had won- Fleury would have been MVP without a doubt but I can understand why he didn't get it...it only makes sense to give it to the winner...there are very rare occassions liek a Micheal Jordan on the other team that is plying all the time liek a Micheal Jordan, at the end of the day it is about respect...anyway

Devils coming next season!

I agree with everything you said pretty much word for word. Great minds think alike (Go Wings 2009):D

My wife actually got excited this season watching hockey with me. If you know my wife you'd know that she's the opposite of a sports fan of any kind but seeing her sit down and get nervous and then clap her hands when the clock ran out in game 6 was a major break through in my eyes. I think she's becoming assimilated into one of us.

Yeah, either that or she wants something. ;)

Alright....it took me all day to get the nerve to log in and check on you guys. This hit me hard. Did I cry? Just about. I can't stand it when my teams lose like this. I really, really felt like we were going to win last night. I dang near cried when that puck slid in the goal after Fleury landed on it. That is pretty much like the cheap goal we got of Kronwalls skate in the last game.

marcray.....man, that is totally cool for you to come full circly on Fleury. I about blew my lid when you bagged on him at the outset of the series. Quite honorable on your part to give the man, er kid, his due. He is only 23, and a stellar career is now laid out for him. What a way to kick it off.

Detroit is the best team in the NHL, hands down. Watching them pass was a treat. To me, that impressed me more than anything else. How do you guys say it......tape to tape passing? I'm sure I'll get to the point where I understand defensive and offensive schemes more and the finer points of the game that you guys can notice, but not yet. It was those little things that gave Detroit the advantage. That, and the pure passion and desire to win. I can recognize that in any athlete, and it was all over the ice in red and white. One of the guys mentioned how the Pens skate with their heads down sometimes, and said to watch and see how Detroit never does that. I paid attention, and the RW's really don't. They know where they are going, what they are doing, and what they are going to do. A finely tuned machine with surgically precise players is what I see.

As sad as I was at the end of the game......man it was AWESOME to see Chris Osgood win a Cup. I watched him play in the WHL back in the day. I like Zetterberg, so I am happy for him too. He seems like a nice man besides a stud hockey player.

So hey you Detroit guys........you beat us four times out of six in a hockey series....NO WAY in h-e-double-hockey-sticks you beat us four out of six times in football....NO WAY EVER!!!! :D :D

Time for me to go look at our roster to see who might be leaving us, and see who the FA's are on Detroit that we can lure away. Zetterberg would look good skating for us.
