The 2008 Stanley Cup Playoff Thread

Regardless of who you are rooting for one thing is for sure: Ryan Malone is tough as nails. He already had a broken nose from game 1, and then he took a slapshot straight to the face. I'm guessing about 99% of the NHL would stay down after that, but Malone got up after about 2 seconds and skated to the bench. Got stitched up and came back out to play the rest of the game.

But I will agree....there is some uniqueness to the NHL game that I really like. We had it all except one of those deals where the player skates one on one against the goalie. I think Osgood and Fleury BOTH would have stopped those last night.

Breakaways. I think Fleury would've stopped them all night long. Osgood...probably pre-OT Osgood would've stopped them (and sortof did, on Crosby's shot after an offside where he flashed the leather).

Once OT started, Osgood looked shaky. Poor rebound control and his positioning could've been better. Thats what happens when you only get 18 shots against during a game, and then 2 during the first OT. You get cold and your mind wanders and you lose focus. Also letting in the tying goal late in the third could've demoralized him a bit too.

15 years in the league and his age were probably a factor as well.

It's just a list, I'll give it here. The original is in the above link at The Onion.

Keys to the Matchup - 2008 Stanley Cup

Pittsburg Penguins (their spelling)
-When refs aren't looking play with 24 men on the ice
-Every shot should be a slapshot - this is the finals, after all
-Must neutralize creative and electrifying Pavel Datsyuk: God only knows how, but they should figure out a method on their own and use it
-Improve passing game by shouting "Yo, flip the biscuit!" and other colorful phrases when open
-Sidney Crosby, right? He should probably do something
-Defense wins championships, but ignore that fact because Detroit's is much better

Detroit Red Wings
-Defensemen Nicklas Lidstrom and Niklas Kronwall need to slow down play, trap the puck against the boards, and do anything else in their power to make the series totally unwatchable
-Legendary goalie Dominik "The Dominator" Hasek must utterly dominate the bench
-Play the games as quickly as possible before 46 year old Chris Chelios dies right there on the ice
-Exploit any type of opening between goalie and goal through which a puck could fit
-Critical that Chris Osgood does not get run over by the zamboni again
-Everyone knows that Sidney Crosby will score the winning goal in a game 7 shootout, but make it look natural

Some funny stuff, but it seems like the Onion caught wind of my wife's conspiracy theory.

I think history may actually be on the Pens side. I got this little tidbit from a friend in Pittsburgh....

In 1991, the Giants won the Super Bowl
In 1991, there was a Bush in the White house
In 1991, there was a Clinton running for President
In 1991, there was a war in Iraq
In 1991, the Penguins won the Stanley Cup

there was a clinton running for president in 92, not 91. there was no election in 91.

technically speaking.

OK fellas....we're about 20-25 minutes out. It will be another gut wrenching night for me. Every time a RW skates up the ice with the puck toward Fleury, I'll probably jump out of my chair. Every time I see Holmstrom "post up" in front of the net, I'm going to get nervous. Same goes for the chances we get on the offensive end, every dump into the corner, every time someone fires away at the point, every time I see Hossa buzzing around with the puck.......oh man, this is great.

I'm already beyond my realm of knowledge here, so I have no pearls of wisdom for pre-game analysis. The one thing I will say is that I think Jordan Staal will come up big tonight.

If the NHL season ends tonight, and it very well could, a BIG THANK YOU to marcray, TheXym, JimK, rjny36, Febs, warwick.hoy, heroincredible, and burk for teaching me about the NHL. Especially you marcray.

Let's do this Pens, let's do this.
