The 2008 Stanley Cup Playoff Thread

Sorry, Mike...I just hadda do it!

No problem. You're a disappointed Flyers fan, so you'll take what you can get right about now. It's alright. Hehehe!

At the time I said that, I was trying to learn more about Detroit. My words came from the same lack of experience I share with many of the Pens players. Pittsburgh did not play them this year, so I do not remember seeing them beyond highlights. I'm not that huge of a hockey fan yet to go dig through archived games like I do for the NFL.

I didn't think they were all that great initially. But trust me, Crosby and Malkin are sitting right next to me on the "shocked" bench. :D

Then again.....it's gloomy for the Pens tonight, but the series is not over. If the RW's come out like they already won, it could get ugly for them. The puck drops in about an hour. I have no plans of giving up till it's officially over.

Hey, considering last year's mess, I was pretty happy with how Philly did in this year's playoffs.
I've seen 'better' Philly teams get KO'd in the FIRST Round.

Tonite we may have "Hoist"...

Therien gives himself 4 minutes of credit about his decisions on the bench (his team were outshot 58-32) before a journo asks a question about the goalie and he mentions Marc Andre-Fleury... he should've carried him to the press conference and kissed his stinkin' feet.

I am tired and emotionally spent after the last five hours. I woke up half our neighborhood when I screamed GOOOOAAAAALLLLLLL!!!! on Sykora's one timer.

All I can really say for now is that GI call on Hank in OT was bo-gus. The GI call on Cleary was touchy, but no Pens player forced him to make contact with Fleury. But yes, it could have easily not been called and I wouldn't have thought twice. I'm thinking in the SC finals, you don't make that call on Cleary. Thank goodness we did not score off one of those PP's.

Yeah, but same time when they called a bogus goalie interference they missed one of the wings kicking same goalie with an open skate. A freaken NO-NO if you ask me. So i ma call it equal.

In the Finals in OT, you don' make any of those calls, any of them, the call on Sykora included. The refs were again, sadly inconsistent. The call on Sykora I believe was a hideous attempt to make up for the ridiculous GI calls, then after watching Gill, Roberts and Orpick mug and cross check every Wings forward they met, especially the hit from behind against the boards on Helm (I think), I thought the whistles were in pockets... alas no.

WOW.
I heard the news this morning on the drive in.
Game 6?
...will be interesting to see if the Wings are still thinking about giving up the tying goal with under a minute to go on home ice.

I've got a feeling that, if things are called evenly, that Fleury will steal a game, and the Pens will win one, though not by a blowout. My serious prediction: Wings in six, assuming no further injuries of significance to either side.

This is the second attempt at a post, since the net ate my last post.

The above quote was from before the series started (5/20) to be exact.

Game 3 - the Pens won on emotion. Game 5 - Fleury stole. Marc-Andre played one heck of a game between the pipe for the Pens, and deserves the credit due him. NOTHING can take that away from him (though Therrien apparently was trying to take it for himself post-game...). I stand by that prediction (though if it goes to seven games, I don't like the Wings chances but I won't go into that at this time)

That said, I though it was a very entertaining game to watch, even if the "wrong" team won :D The Wings carried the play for the vast majority of the game, and deserved the win. The 3rd, one bad clearing attempt (surprisingly it was Stuart and not Lilja... then again, Stu did make a bad play to give Sid a goal earlier in the series. His free agent price is dropping when that happens), with about 41 seconds left and the Pens capitalize. You've got to give them credit. Period. That said, if Kronwall doesn't put the puck in his own net, the game doesn't go into OT. (Ironic that Hall, who burned the Wings regularly as a Predator got credit for the goal). The post by Datsyuk was a heartbreaker - he totally owned Fleury with that move. Still, the Hossa post makes that a wash.

Despite him being on the opposing team, I was glad to see Gonchar able to return to the game, as well as Malone - that puck to the face was scary, and reminded me of Bob Rouse having his orbital bone shattered a few years back on a similar play.

OT - the high stick by Hudler was the right call to make. As soon as it happened, I knew it was over. The goaltender interference calls on Zetterberg and Cleary were utter crap. Period. They'd be atrocious calls during a regular season game, let alone a Cup Final in OT. The fact that Milbury and Maguire, neither of whom care much for the Wings, were going off about it attests to this. It doesn't take away from what Fleury did between the pipes, but you've got to call a steaming pile a steaming pile.... As far as the kick another poster mentioned - who and when?

If the Wings pull the series out, I think this game barring a shutout performance by Osgood for the game 4 win puts the Conn Smythe nod to Zetterberg. If the Pens win in seven, it should go to Fleury.
