The 2008 Stanley Cup Playoff Thread

If the Penguins manage to come back, it would be a crime if Fleury doesn't win the Conn Smythe trophy. His performance last night was legendary. Him plus the overall sloppiness of the Wings in the last 2 minutes of regulation equaled the comeback. The goalie interference calls were questionable, but nothing really came of those penalties.

Dang, I am still tired. I'm awake, but I am seriously lacking brain power and emotional energy. All of those big saves from Fleury and rushes from the RW's are flashing through my mind.

How many times did my heart drop into my stomach as I watched a couple RW's get a breakaway on Fleury, or a loose puck punched around in front of his goal. Only to see Fleury again turn someone way....over and over and over again. I am a happily married heterosexual man, but I wanted to give Fleury a big kiss after last night. Yes, he kept us alive.

But....but....watching Gonchar skate on to the ice after being injured gave me goosebumps. Something also should be said about Staal's play last night. He did a great job repeatedly on the PK. The rest of the Pens never gave up and kept hanging around despite the non-stop onslaught from the RW's and the overwhelming odds against us. It seemed like we went 8-9 minutes at a time with the puck never getting out of our zone. Malkin has virtually disappeared, but he keeps skating his shifts and trying to make something happen I give him credit for that.

I hope I can be re-charged for game six tomorrow night. Wow.....I love the NHL!

Congrats Pen Fans, I've got to give the Pens credit for not having a lot of quit in them. That said, don't get to cocky Pens fans, remember Kromwell scored one of your goals. That's not the first time, I remember Coffey scoring two goals for NJ in the 95 finals.:smug:

THEXYM OT - the high stick by Hudler was the right call to make. As soon as it happened, I knew it was over. The goaltender interference calls on Zetterberg and Cleary were utter crap. Period. They'd be atrocious calls during a regular season game, let alone a Cup Final in OT. The fact that Milbury and Maguire, neither of whom care much for the Wings, were going off about it attests to this. It doesn't take away from what Fleury did between the pipes, but you've got to call a steaming pile a steaming pile.... As far as the kick another poster mentioned - who and when?

Yep, the goal winner came on a correct call, having said that, the fact that the Wings had to kill off two penalties that were absolute unmitigated crap during OT didn't help. Every Hockey player from peewees on up is taught to rush exactly like Z did. Your always taught to keep going when you put the puck on the net in case there's a rebound. The fact that this is suddenly a penalty in the OT of a finals game should get those officials suspended. I have NEVER seen that call in years of watching hockey, it was pathetic. Also the fact that tripping, grabbing, interference, and cross checking were not fouls during OT (especially for the Pens) makes those calls even worse.

Also, and a credit to the Pens, Osgood kept the Wings in it in the early second Period. The Pens had numerous odd man rushes and chances, had Ozzie not stood on his head the Pens could have been up 5-1 going into the third.

Well said. I wasn't going to be the one to bring up other non calls, particularly Gill's stickwork, but since you did.... again, the non-calls don't by any means diminish what Fleury did. I will say that I'll be very leery of any non-calls or phantom calls in game six.

A few years ago, I watched the entire 5 OT Philly/Pitts game. It's all those intermissions that take a toll.
Yeah, I called in slick that day.

You really don't get this with the other sports, do ya?
NHL Playoff Overtime hockey...nothing else like it!

Hopefully, we'll get a Game 7.

I go through a wide range of emotions watching a Steelers game as well. Watching Willie break a tackle when he hits the corner, seeing Big Ben uncork a 50 yard bomb, watching Ike Taylor turn and run as soon as he realized he missed a zone coverage....it's there too.

But I will agree....there is some uniqueness to the NHL game that I really like. We had it all except one of those deals where the player skates one on one against the goalie. I think Osgood and Fleury BOTH would have stopped those last night.

burk......no cockyness over here. The RW's just beat us at the Igloo on Saturday. The RW's are still the best team in the NHL, and they proved it even in a losing effort Monday. A game seven is not a sure thing in my mind. But you can sure as heck bet I want it to happen.

Both teams' passing and puck handling were sloppy at times. There seemed to be quite a few turnovers and odd-man rushes in the game, especially early on. Ironically, they seemed sharper in that respect in OT than in the first and second periods.

Agreed, though I think the 80 degree + temperature and 20,000 warm bodies contributed to deteriorating conditions late in the game. That doesn't account for the early sloppiness of passes from both teams though.

Mike - great comparison with the Steelers game, though I think that hockey has more emotional roller coaster potential. Regardless of the outcome, this has been a heck of a series. After we all recover from the late evening, I'm looking forward to trading pregame analysis.

JimK - agreed about how intermissions hurt during OT games. My wife stayed up for the whole game (she usually regrets it if she stays up after 10:30 or so and gets up for work) and was surprisingly chipper today - she called me to come home for lunch and she'd made a very nice pasta dish with peppers, garlic, soy steak strips, and her homemade jerk (as in the jamaican spice, keep it clean) sauce.

There were some times there that the Penguin offense was on FIRE. They owned the entirety of the second OT period. Whoo, my hair was standing on end.

Both goalies played phenomenally. They both deserve to go down as legends. It really did seem like, at times, there were several minutes where the puck didn't leave one side, and those goalies stopped everything.

Hell of a game.

No doubt he's needing a Starbux doubleshot + energy.
(Oh damn, you punched in, Dan-O). ;)

I agree with Xym about the roller coaster effect of hockey...that & how things can change in a heartbeat.
Maybe this is normal, I don't know-
During the regular season, I could care less if my team goes on the penalty kill...sometimes, I prefer it 'cause it may give them a lift & wake their asses up if they're lollygaggin' out there.
Playoff hockey? I'm on pins & needles the whole penalty kill. The effect gets magnified when it's in OT!
;)

Fleury was outstanding in front of the net, but there were times when he made me nervous. These were mostly when he was out of the crease--like to play the puck behind the goal--and seemed either a little lethargic or unaware. I was sure he was going to get the puck stripped away.

I was thinking the same thing. He clearly does not have the puck handling skills of a guy like Osgood. I kept yelling at him to get back in goal everytime he skated out....."It's the flippin' RW's Marc!!! Those guys will grab that puck and flick it in the goal so fast, you won't know it happened!!!!!!!!!!!"

I'm watching Franzen, Cleary, Helm, Hank, or Holmstrom circle around him like sharks just waiting for a mistake with the puck. I'm flipping out at the same time about the Pens guys just standing there watching Fleury skate towards the puck.....GO GET IT ALREADY!!! Let the man stay in goal.

I need another eight hours of sleep, is what I need. I seriously got no sleep Friday night, about 4 hours on saturday, and 6 on sunday. Then followed by that travesty, all the while having to be back at work at seven. EURGH.
