The 2008 Stanley Cup Playoff Thread

Maybe the refs need to get the Pens a 5 on 2.
:D

Great Series, I've got to give the Pens credit they don't quit. For the record hitting the stick out of a defense-mans arm when he's not in contact with the puck or engaged with a player is a penalty too, so the Pens last goal was also on a 5 on 3. Still the Pens kept fighting I've got to give them credit. I think if their forwards work on defense they'll be a pretty good team in the next few years. The biggest difference between the two teams besides defensive depth, was the fact that the wings had more two way players, all the wings forwards play good D. Anyway the cup is in HOCKEYTOWN where it belongs!:D:hyper:

This is also a first, Dan Cleary is the first Newfy to hoist the cup. That is shocking, With all that Ice and snow in Newfoundland it took them Cannucks this long to win a cup. Gosh someone from Livonia won a cup before a Newfy did.:D

Was anyone else annoyed by the completely biased coverage? Every single hard hit by a Pens player was a "great hit", and every hard hit by the Wings "should have been a penalty". Geez, I know Crosby is the new face of the NHL and a damn fine player, but how about a little balance?

It's been annoying all season... VS is almost unwatchable. Last game we were seeing highlites of Crosby lose the puck instead of the wings goal that was just scored... but now it's over... funny to hear the Pens fans boo Bettman. If anyone has benefitted from Bettman, by far, it's the Pens!!!

Anyway, enough trash...

Another great game... gotta say, it sucks to see a team skate the cup on opposition ice. Nothing like a home win.

This whole final, Wings have purely dominated. They had a dominating season and they brought that form to the play-offs and stifled the most potent offense the League has seen in a long time. Talking purely offensive creativity, Pens are ridiculous, once again, they almost tied the game tonight. The Wings won by making them skate thru sand, limiting there space and time, which is quite a feat considering no Pens player holds a puck in the offensive zone for more than a split second. The wings just didn't let the pens set up (hope you're watching Renney!!).

Biggest surprise of the series was Marc Andre Fleury. He has changed my mind, I thought he was their biggest weakness. Lets face it, it woulda been an embarrassing sweep without him, the shot totals tell that story, he was incredible. No shame in the winning goal, it was a helluva shot and honestly Brooks Orpick was just standing there in front of the net looking for someone to hit instead of checking his goal line. Bad mistake there.

I thought Filppula had a great game... nice to see Finns and Swedes getting along!

Well I'm gonna watch the press conference now so I can snicker at Crosby...

BTW, MJ5150, glad you came aboard, you're a true gent, way better sporting conduct than me and it's been fun chatting with you about the game and it's surroundings. In October, we joust again!!!! Divisional rivals, fun fun fun (one of my best pals is an Islander fan, it's okay, I don't bite, except when we lose).:)

First off, Congratulations to the Penguins on a fantastic season! You guys played with heart, passion, and skill. It'd be one heck of a lie to say that you didn't manage to give me some near-fatal heartattacks throughout this series. I'll always have a special place in my heart for the Pens, and it was great to see the game go down to the wire. Tons and tons of great talent on the Penguins team, and I think this was an extremely positive learning experience for them. Fleury was phenomenal. He's got the raw ability to tear it up for the rest of his career.

Thanks to MJ5150 and all the rest of the Penguins fans! You guys were absolutely great to share this space with. You folks are all class acts, and I truly, truly hope that you've caught the fever for the sport--especially you, MJ!

Great, great season...

And now I'm sad that there's no more games until the fall!

for what it's worth, shame on NBC for not having camera's in Detroit. No bar shots, no gatherings anywhere? Did the Joe do anything? Who knows?

Joe Louis was running "Joe Vision"--showing the game on the scoreboard and from what I could tell, there was probably 13-15,000 (maybe more???) fans there. Downtown Royal Oak (where I finally just made it back from!) is going absolutely nuts! The town is celebrating, to say the least.

That is pretty lame. When I was watching game 5 they showed a crowd on CBC watching the game in Newfoundland in between the second and third OT I believe. I missed everything after the final whistle as I had a gig tonight, so I don't know if CBC showed anything from Detroit, or the reaction from the Newfies for finally having a player win the Cup.

Congrats to Wings fans! Well deserved victory, as you guys played hard all series. And congrats to Pens fans! After a rough several years you've managed to turn it around and make it to the finals! Your guys definitely fought to stay alive, til the last second, and thats to be applauded as I've seen some teams just give up. I hope Crosby matures well, we should see some great things from him (after all, Gretzky also dove, and he's considered one of the best players int he history of the league)...even if he is a filthy diver :p

Hopefully the Cup finds its way back to Canada next year.

Yeah, tell me about it. All season long it's been the Crosby Show on VS. The boy could no wrong in their eyes. I live in Columbus, surrounded by Red Wing hating Blue Jackets fans and even they want the Wings to win just to shut Crosby fans up.

;)

Yep, everyone went nuts up here last night.

It's actually not surprising that it took this long despite the climatic suitability. :D We've only been part of Canada since 1949, we have a small population (500000 for the whole province) and we're geographically isolated, so there haven't been many NHLers from here.

The Pens came really close to tying it up in the last second. As much as I wanted Detroit to win, I think that would have been interesting to see.
