The All New Julie Slick thread

More new Julie music! Steve Lawson has just released an album of duets with Julie, titled "Marinate." He says three of the four tracks were just recorded last Saturday.

But here's the hitch: The only way to get it is to send him a link to your Bandcamp "fan page," showing that you have purchased both his recent "Diversion" and Julie and Marco's "Fourth Dementia." Then he'll send you a link to download "Marinate" for free. Here's a link to his page with all the info:

I just downloaded it and am listening to it now. Looks to be ~36 min. total across 4 tracks (aptly titled "Simmer," "Marinate," "Steam," and "Blend").

I'm so excited!!!!! ABPT is coming to Atlanta and it's a really great small venue so the experience will be incredible. Hoping to get some super great shots of Julie in action. It's a small enough place that maybe she'll even smile and wave. I can't wait!

Actually, you'll probably get to meet her and talk to her, at least briefly. On previous tours they've always hung out after shows to sign merch, and I'd be very surprised if they didn't continue that tradition. So plan to buy a CD or something and get in line.

That's assuming that you actually survive the show, of course. The amount of energy this band generates in a small venue is slightly terrifying....

Energy in small place = terrifying is exactly what I'd hope for in this venue with this group. If they do sign merch that would be even better! Can't wait; can't wait!!

So I'm getting pretty excited about the upcoming Power Trio tour, which starts in a couple of weeks. Belew has said that they'll be rehearsing for nearly a week before heading out, and that they'll be significantly re-vamping the show, so I'm eager to see what they come up this time around.

Frankly, I'm fine with whatever material they choose, but I do have one request: I'd really like to see them add one or more of Julie's originals to the repertoire. I don't know if that's a realistic prospect, but that's what I'm hoping for. It seems to me there are numerous choices from her two solo albums that could be arranged for power trio and would fit right in. For example, here's a version of her band Paper Cat doing a tune from her self-titled first album:

If you have any favorites you'd like to hear -- and/or if you're with me on the idea of including a Julie tune -- you can go to Belew's Facebook page and post your requests. (He posted a solicitation for such requests a few hours ago.) A buddy of mine has already posted a request for a Julie tune, but so far that's just one. Maybe the more people who do so, the more likely it'll happen?

So Adrian has already tallied the data and posted a list of the top 10 most requested tunes:

1. big electric cat
2. dinosaur
3. lone rhino
4. three of a perfect pair
5. men in helicopters
6. frame by frame
7. elephant talk
8. city of tiny lights
9. matte kudasai
10. heartbeat

Sadly, there were only two requests for a Julie original (both friends of mine). But Adrian was quick to point out that this was only a list of most-requested songs, not the band's set list (which may or may not include any of these and which will surely include more than 10 songs). So I'm still holding out hope that the idea has at least been planted...

Saw ABPT in Boston this past weekend. Fantastic show! Adrian plays pretty much everything you could possibly imagine wanting him to play - just not the long versions :). JS did her usual superb job on the low end. I also got to stock up on Terroir and Fourth Dementia; both have been on continuous play since the show. I like Julie with the Power Trio, but I *love* her solo stuff. Terroir is huge; such a beautiful psychedelic dream of a record. FD is more down to earth and focused, and more "bassy" too. Loving them both.

Just to clarify Rick's comment about "just not the long versions": The set contains about 30 songs, but in many cases they play only a snippet -- say, a single chorus or verse -- before careening off in another direction (often with a short precorded sound bite of some sort in between). The idea is to emulate (as well as can be done live) what his soon-to-be-released "FLUX" app will do. However, there are several songs that are played in their entirety, including some with big improvisational instrumental sections. I talked with Adrian after one of the shows about it, and he agreed that an entire set of zig-zagging snippets would be too much. I would have been disappointed if that had been the case, but I thought he found just the right balance by including full versions of things like "b" and "Beat Box Guitar" containing monster jams.

One cool thing I pointed out to my son the other night was how Adrian was constantly prompting and cueing the drummer. Kept an eye on him all night....great drummer....But not 100% in the fold....On the other hand he never even glanced at Julie all night except to chuckle about something. She was flawless.

Yes, thanks for clarifying that. I found the format quite enjoyable, and thought it was a nice way to cover a fairly extensive catalog, like Adrian has. As I recall, Dinosaur and e were given full treatments, probably a couple of others, and yes there were some nice improv segments as well.

Another fun (and no doubt unplanned) aspect to Adrian's performance were the couple of times the technology appeared to nearly "get away" from him, followed by some mad pedal dancing and fiddling, and then sighs of relief and laughter with the band. Very much in the "on the hairy edge" spirit of the proceedings.
