The All New Julie Slick thread

do hope they extend some dates to the US (particularly Richmond,Va or as close to Roanoke as possible) for the KCP / ABPT tour. missed the Richmond show last year but will definitely make the road trip if it happens again.

Tony Levin's web site (papabear.com) lists the March dates under the heading, "THE CRIMSON PROJEKCT EUROPE & MORE Spring 2014." No telling what "& MORE" means, but maybe there's a glimmer of hope....

Hi, Julie -- thanks for dropping by!

I just stumbled across a great audio interview with Julie about the making of Terroir here:

https://soundcloud.com/john-slywka/bassist-julie-slick-talks

The interviewer, John Slywka, is a musician himself -- in fact, he played bass (?!) on one of the Terroir tracks -- and the questions and discussion clearly reflect that: This is an interview of a musician, by a musician, for musicians. It's long (about 37 minutes), so make some popcorn first. It's chock-full of interesting tidbits about the processes by which different tunes were composed and developed, how particular guests wound up on particular tracks, what instruments were used to create which sounds, the origins of track titles, and so forth. But beyond that, it (as a whole) provides a fascinating glimpse into the musical mind that is Julie Slick's, with respect to how she thinks about and approaches music generally. Highly recommended!

In case you haven't noticed, Julie and Springs-bandmate Mike Visser have a new Kickstarter campaign running to fund production of a new duo album under the name "spry imp." According to the Kickstarter page, "this disc will be the first of many, and will act as an outlet for Julie's latest compositions, and for mike's more exploratory side of writing—think king crimson meets peter gabriel... meets "terroir" meets "springs"... Check it out here:

+1

So I finally got around to contributing to the Slick-Visser "spry imp" Kickstarter campaign (see my post just above this one for details and a link), and was (unpleasantly) surprised to see that with 7 days left, they are still a very long way from their (modest) target. I know there are lots of Julie fans here at TB: Where are you?

Good news for Julie fans everywhere outside North America: Lots of shows coming up of different sorts in various places around the (rest of the) world. I don't know of any one place to go for all the dates, but here's what I know about at this point:

Late November: Two dates in Sweden, one at the IB Expo (with David Torn and others) and one with Swedish group Midaircondo.

Early December: Adrian Belew Power Trio South American (mini-)tour.

January: Crimson ProjeKCt (Stick Men + ABPT + double trio) tour of New Zealand and Australia.

March: Crimson ProjeKCt European tour.

Also, I just recently stumbled across a tweet or something about an upcoming duo show with Steve Lawson, to be streamed live somewhere on the interwebs. I think it's going to be soon, but don't know any details at this point.

Steve Lawson has just post an announcement about the upcoming streaming-only duo gig with Julie:

The stream platform evidently hasn't been decided yet, so stay tuned. Also, the time is announced as 8:00 pm, but doesn't specify what time zone that refers to. (They'll be doing this in London or thereabouts.) I've posted a comment/query on the web page to try to find out....

Update re: Monday's streaming Lawson/Slick streaming live show: The 8:00 pm start time is London time. By my arithmetic, that'll be 3:00 pm EST. The stream platform is still TBD....

This should be an awesome show -- can't wait!

Evidently this Monday live-stream show isn't going to happen after all. Just saw this on Steve's FB page:

"Sadly, due to a bit of a technical mix-up (Julie & her gear being in different cities) the gig is postponed til next year."

What a bummer: I was REALLY psyched for this!

Its impossible to cover Cyrus while clothed. I see that Julie is sleeveless, that's just inadequate. :hiding:

Point taken, but to be fair, they're not actually covering Miley Cyrus so much as a song that she happened to write. And I think even us non-Miley fans have to admit that this is a beautiful arrangement of a pretty good song.

If you want to see Julie actually impersonating another artist (so to speak), see this:

Much more up her alley, IMO.

So from I've been able to piece together from Facebook pages, Twitter, and so forth, it appears that Julie is (briefly) back from her recent trip to Europe (where she did a couple of gigs with the Swedish group Midaircondo and participated in the IB Expo) and South America (with Adrian Belew), and will be doing a couple of East-coast gigs before heading off to New Zealand and Australia for some Crimson ProjeKCt gigs in January.

On Friday, Dec. 20, she'll be performing as part of a trio on Long Island. The only info I've been able to find has been this advert posted on her FB page:

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?...738179876.8022.117558411619042&type=1&theater

I did a little research on this and learned that the guitarist is the guy behind Pigtronix pedals, which Julie uses and endorses. I assume this show is a one-off, but it sure sounds like it could be interesting.

The next night, Saturday 12/21, she'll be doing a solo show down on the Jersey shore, here:

http://www.belmararts.org/?page_id=2121

And here's an amusing video promo for the latter:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEMZeTaoCx8

I'm hoping to make it to both of these: Even though I live in SE Virginia now, I grew up on the Jersey shore and am thinking that the holidays might be a good time for an overdue visit to see my Dad. If anyone else can make one or the other, lemme know so we can be sure to meet up and say hello.

A little more info about the NY and NJ gigs next weekend:

As for the Belmar, NJ solo show on the 21st, important information has been added to the youtube page containing the promo video (see my post immediately above for link) regarding advance reservations.

As for the Long Island show on the 21st, I found out (direct from Julie in this case) that the trio is planning a 3-hour show comprising a mixture of her originals, Dave's originals, and covers.

:hyper:

A coupla recent vids of Julie and playing solo with the Slick VI....

From her recent gig in Belmar, NJ:

I'm still kicking myself for not having made it to the Belmar show, despite my best intentions. Was anybody else there, or at her Long Island show the night before?
