The All New Julie Slick thread

Time to revive this thread in anticipation of the release of Julie's second solo album, Terroir. Here's a link to an "updates" page from her Kickstarter campaign with more information and links:

This thread's too quiet! But man, those were some dang good cookies!

I'm such a dork that I haven't listened to the digital copy yet. I've had it for some time, but I'm holding off taking any of the music in until I get the physical CD. Yes, I'm strange.

But any TB'ers out there that haven't bought Julie's CD, just open her home page for streaming samples of her music. Her CD is very purchase-worthy!

Other than dorkiness or strangeness, I can think of a couple of good reasons to avoid listening to the downloaded version. First, you wouldn't want to listen to it on your computer unless you have really great speakers; second, you wouldn't want to listen to a version reconstituted from a compressed format like mp3. I think sound quality is crucial for fully appreciating this album, which is as much about tones and sonic textures as it is about composition and technique. Fortunately, Julie made the download available in a wide variety of formats, so I downloaded the (lossless) flac files, converted them to wav files, and burned a CD from these to listen to on my home stereo and in the car.

...which I've been doing over and over and over. I really liked her first album, but this one's at another level entirely.

Julie will be back on the East Coast for a couple of weeks touring with her new(ish) band "Springs": Check out julieslick.com for dates. Up first on the schedule -- this Friday, 7/5) -- is a Bahner/Slick duo set at Carl Bahner's studio in King of Prussia, PA; the next night Springs will do a show at the same venue. As I understand it, a limited number of tickets are available to attend the shows live, and there will also be webcasts available for a few bucks. See springhousesound.com for details.

If you're not familiar with Springs, I should point out that this is a very different kind of band than the prog/experimental stuff that Julie is mainly known for: It's more of a smart, indie-rock kinda thing. This genre isn't usually my cup of tea, but I like these guys. Here's a nice example from a little while back:

There's also a Springs album that was released a few months ago that you can check out in the store at Julie's web site.

I'll be at Charlottesville, VA show on Sunday, and I'm going to try to make it to Jammin' Java next week. Anybody else?

So I saw Springs do two sets in Charlottesville on Sunday night, and they were great. Keyboardist Claire Wadsworth wasn't able to make this gig (though I understand she'll be back for the rest of the tour), but the awesome Carl Bahner sat in on drums to complete a trio lineup. I'd estimate that about 50% of their playing time was devoted to songs from their album, and the other 50% to wide-open, balls-to-the-wall jamming.

This is just a short tour in the Northeast before they head back to L.A., so catch them if you can!

I just tried to catch up with the thread, and just learned of Julie's west coast relocation, new Lakland, and her work with Springs. Thanks Lobster, it seems likeYesterday when I last checked in, about the time ofthe Belew shows in British Columbia. That Big Black Sky Vimeo video reminds me how well the Slick siblings play together - it almost makes me wish For Doctor Doggs demise. Eric makes that pocket so effortless and smooth, and Julie just locks it in. Despite what sounded on first listen to be a rough start by the vocalist/guitarist (who I'm imaging is likely the writer of the song),he and the band really have a great thing going shortly thereafter.

For anybody who has a chance to catch any of the remaining Springs shows on this short tour: I just learned that some of these dates will will include Eric Slick on drums, and some will be a drummer-less trio (Claire, Mike, and Julie). I don't know which shows will be which way, but I'm sure we could find out from Julie if it matters to anyone....

I just looked at the Springs upcoming show listing (emailed to me via Julie's email list - good work Julie's promo department!), and I noticed that she's going to be here in the NYC area next week. Is Eric attending either of the two dates (Manhattan and Brooklyn)?
Note to Julie - the neighborhood surrounding that Bushwick (Brooklyn) gig is quite dicey, please don't venture about, and the L-Train that runs close by (and provides transportation into Manhattan) suffers from the same problems. Take a car/van/limo.

Its actually a pretty, quaint, and historically VERY interesting neighborhood that's on the upswing, but there's still way too much crime.

The long-awaited S.A.M. (Slick-Alexius-Mennigmann) album was released today. Go here for a cool video teaser and links to download the 2-CD set (Another Life) and an additional EP (Yet Another Life):

Here's a description and brief history from Marc Mennigmann's liner notes:

Some years ago, Peter took me to a concert of the Adrian Belew Power Trio and I immediately fell in love with the brilliant bass playing of Julie Slick. Several concerts later we decided to bring Julie to Germany someday, make a record with her and play some concerts. And here we are, SAM, the trio Julie Slick, Peter Alexius and Marc Mennigmann.

"This record is the essence of one week in the studio. In total we recorded 11 hours of improvised music and we are thrilled to present only the best moments of improvisation, intention and interaction here. "Another Life" is a 160 minutes - 31 tracks - 100% improvised album. Every track, every melody, every groove and every note is 100% improvised, so let's call it Progressive-Free-Jazz-Rock!"

I've only listened to about 20 min. of the first disc so far, but it's just what I had hoped it would be: "Progressive-Free-Jazz-Rock" is as good a label as any. Seriously demented stuff, featuring (of course) bass-shred galore!
