The All New Julie Slick thread

Evidently Julie has been keeping secrets from us. There are no announcements at Julie's site, or Belew's, or Levin's, but several venues around the country have announced summer dates for a band named "Crimson Projekct" -- comprising Tony Levin, Pat Mastelotto, Markus Reuter, Adrian Belew, Tobias Ralph, and the Barefoot Bomber herself -- opening for Dream Theater.

Here's an announcement and list of dates from Guitar World:

I've never seen Dream Theater, but they've been on my bands-to-see list for several years. And having seen the "Crim-centric encores" on last year's joint tour of ABPT and Stick Men, it will be great to see what the six of them can put together this year as a double trio. Woo-hoo!

Yeah, the "Two of a Perfekt Trio" last fall was a great show, the pathetic venue PA/soundman notwithstanding (Birdy's in Indianapolis, cannot badmouth them enough!!!!!).

I wasn't thinking of going to see Dream Theater, but this might just push me into visiting Cincinnati for an outing. Especially since DT's new drummer is just ridiculously amazing.

Julie's been flying under the radar for the last couple of months, but it's time to resurrect this thread. So if you haven't been paying attention....

The "Crimson ProjeKct" -- comprising the three current members of Stick Men (Tony Levin, Pat Mastelotto, Markus Reuter) and the Adrian Belew Power Trio (Belew, Tobias Ralph, and the Barefoot Bomber) -- will be touring this summer, starting a couple of weeks from now, opening for the band Dream Theater. (Check julieslick.com, adrianbelew.net, or any number of other sites for dates.) We can argue about why these guys are opening for Dream Theater rather than the other way around, but I trust that most of us would be on the same side of the argument....

If you were fortunate enough to catch any shows on last year's tour, you got to see ABPT and Stick Men each play a 45-minute set, followed by a combined double-trio set of "Crim-centric" material. According to Belew's latest post on his web site, the "Crimson ProjeKct" refers to the full six-piece ensemble, and their performance on this tour will be a set by the double-trio, sans separate sets by ABPT and Stick Men.

I would of course rather see the separate bands AND the double-trio -- or a two-hour set of the double-trio -- but we'll have to take what we can get. I'll be at the show at the National in Richmond. Anybody else?

I can't wait to hear the new solo album, which Julie says will be available for download in a couple of weeks. I'd be looking forward to it anyway, of course, but I've got some extra motivation for this one. A buddy and I teamed up to make a substantial contribution to the Kickstarter campaign that, among other goodies, entitled us to "appear on the album." I sent her a recording of a "spontaneous composition" by our band, from which she evidently has extracted a snippet and inserted it into a piece that she had recorded with Tim Motzer. (This makes it extra-cool to us, as we have both become big fans of Motzer since we "discovered" him via the amazing improvisational session/video that Julie and Eric did with him not long ago.) Needless to say, I'm dying to hear it!

I'm surprised that you missed it if you've been following this thread even occasionally: There was discussion about the Kickstarter for months before she launched it, while she was soliciting suggestions about what kinds of perks to offer in exchange for contributions, and she announced the launch in December. But you needn't feel too badly about it: Contributions zoomed passed her stated goal very quickly, and she wound up with nearly double the amount she had targeted.

We too would have gladly contributed "just because," and most of the perks weren't really very important to us. There was only one big perk that we really wanted, and that thus determined how big a contribution we would put together: a house concert! (The being-on-the-album thing happened to come along in the same package). We haven't worked out the details for that yet, but you can bet I'll be posting about that some day....

I contributed to it, and when I posted about the kickstarter in other threads, it was deleted by the mods as being spam....:(

Huh. Really? Well, I guess I can kinda sort understand why they would do that, but kudos to you on trying to do your bit to help spread the word! Fortunately, she didn't suffer from lack of contributions, so it looks like it's all good.

Oooooo.....I may have to be in Detroit that week. If so, I'm gonna try to talk the boss into letting me stay over an extra day so I can go see them at the Fillmore. That would be awesome. Moreso to meet....but awesome to see.

Do it!

The only bummer about that particular show (and a few others) is that Crimson ProjeKct will be missing Markus Reuter, who isn't joining the tour until the next show after Detroit (in Chicago). I have no idea how they're going to pull off their set without him, given that he plays (among much else) all of the Frippish parts.
