The All New Julie Slick thread

One interesting observation: "I naturally started listening to the album first, but later decided that the EP is a better place to start for any newcomer." This hadn't occurred to me, but he might have a point: If you haven't checked out any of this stuff yet, it might be a good idea to start with the EP.

Another observation with which I couldn't agree more: Download in (lossless) flac format, not mp3, to retain the "full bass sound power and richness."

Last night I sat down with the SAM "EP" -- "Yet Another Life" -- and gave it a listen under "optimal circumstances." (I'll leave it to your imagination what exactly that means, but among other things it includes a good sound system cranked loud.) I still don't know if I agree with the review linked above that recommends listening to this first, but I will say that it definitely makes for an excellent stand-alone album.

Total track time adds up to a little more than 36 minutes (if I did my arithmetic right), which I suppose classifies it as an "EP" rather than an "album." But it didn't feel like an "EP" to me at all: By the end of those 36+ minutes, my brain had been sufficiently bludgeoned into submission that it was perfectly happy to take a break. (I mean that in the most positive way possible.) The five tracks provide a nice sampling of the band's range, so it definitely is a good place to start. So if you're not sure about the 2-disc, almost-160-minute main album, by all means cough up the 5 euros for the EP. You will certainly know by the end whether you want more or not -- and I'm guessing that most people will.

Unfortunately I don't get to see that stuff, as I'm one of those few remaining holdouts who "don't do Facebook." I try to keep up with her public twitter and instagram posts, tho.

Hey, I just noticed that this thread recently surpassed 20,000 views. We should have a party or a cake or something.

Just received a newsletter that contained the following announcement:

"....I've decided to make myself available for online bass instruction. I'm totally enthusiastic to accept students at varying levels of ability, so I welcome you to respond to this message if you'd like to participate. We'll have fun, and my rates are very reasonable :)"

Frankly, I'm actually a little reluctant to post this, as I definitely plan to get in on this myself and don't want to have too many other folks competing for my time! But I've already booked my slot (to do via Skype), and as the self-appointed TB Julie-news-passer-alonger I feel compelled to pass this along....

Just discovered that Julie has posted working-draft versions of a couple of new Springs songs (along with a bunch of other interesting little goodies) on her Soundcloud page here:

https://soundcloud.com/julieslick

and on the band's Facebook page here:

https://www.facebook.com/springssongs

The first Springs album was essentially a Mike Visser solo album, with different musicians on different tracks (tho Julie is on most of them) and all songs written by him. Now that the permanent core lineup (Mike, Julie, and Claire Wadsworth) has been cemented, they evidently are writing lots of new stuff collaboratively, which ought to push the material in new and interesting directions. If these two sample tracks are any indication of what's coming, I can't wait to hear more.

Good news for you European fans: Tony Levin has started announcing on his FB page dates for a Crimson ProjeKct tour in March 2014 -- so far including shows in the U.K., Russia, Switzerland, The Netherlands, and Germany (with "more to come"):

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Tony-Levin-Official-Page/115321604133

On the specific event pages linked from this page he explains that: "Our shows are usually both trios (Stick Men and Adrian's Power Trio) doing sets, then all six players teaming up for a set of King Crimson material."

IMHO this is the ideal format to see this lineup: The double-trio set is fun, but I personally dig the separate ABPT and Stick Men sets even more.
