The argument for (or) against mixing cabs - example: 115 & 410

Sorry, can't muster the effort to read everything here. Play what you like. But I urge you to compare mixed drivers to matched drivers -- see for yourself. When I did, I was sold on matched drivers. And consider this thought: There's a reason FOH pros use matched drivers.

Can someone use the word "crossover" again in this thread, in a sentence.

Oh and it does not have to pertain to speaker design, but it can if you want to...Ho

I have a friend who is a crossover. He looks very good in a dress. Quite svelte.
 
it certainly is not black and white. All XX" drivers are not the same, or even designed for the same purpose.
Size means nothing.
Some people still claim that "bass frequency needs XX amount of feet to develop" when i hear bass just fine with headphones, now of course that includes direct transfer of the vibrations to my body physically.

That claim is made specifically about folded horn cabinets, not bass cabinets in general.

Although they were engineered to work together :)
And acoustic kit, 2 guitars. We're not loud, but just loud enough. (Usually 95db middle of venue full band)

I played the d800 and 112 at Guitar Showcase a while ago, really liked it. Im curious of the tone difference between the 12 and 15. Are the two cabs similar or different? Sweet rig by the way!!

Many of us have no bass in the PA.
Yes you certainly do unless the PA has no microphones at all.
There are all sorts of phase angles getting down the mic's via the spill, it's all a phase anomaly, live gigs are in fact phase soup and there is very little you can do about it other than flick the 180 deg phase switches about on the console to make it better where you are standing.

I can't control the PA. I can control my bass rig. Why not eliminate as many variables as possible?
Because it won't make the slightest difference to the end result when including the PA and all the other out of phase monitors + reflections from walls etc.
In fact It's like diping a tin cup in the Atlantic and hope to measure the change to the high water mark with a tape measure.:-)

I'm not in the PA 99.99999 percent of the time. When I am, a single cab (single driver at low volume EX: 112/115) is enough, since at that point, it's my onstage (spot) monitor, or even better, if the system can support it, I'm only out of the fold back system, or in ears. So the point of mixed drivers/or not is nullified.

like the original poster's example of Flea's rig... it's a huge, expensive, advertisement for GK....AND a cool looking moderate volume hotspot monitor, he's not filling the stadium with that :)
Again a problem with understanding the whole real situation?. If you make any sound at all on stage, some of your sound will be picked up and reproduced by the PA out of phase due to microphone spill.

Just because you see a pro using certain equipment on stage does not mean they are actually using that equipment on stage.
Do you really think Geddy used a row of clothes dryers to get that "Warm, dry sound"?

Almost every aspect of a professional touring musician's gear and image is part of a corporate marketing plan.

Also marketers are not engineers. They don't know jack about the science of sound equipment.
Engineers are seldom permitted to contact the public to sell stuff. They are usually nerds and have a tendency to tell the truth.
So marketers write ad copy and if there's a myth that a lot of people buy into that seems plausible they will exploit that.

If you think the guy at Guitar center making painfully close to minimum wage knows something about music gear that
is based on science and engineering you are likely wrong. Those guys are "trained" to move product and get their information
from ad-copy written by marketers to seem knowledgeable about the gear they sell.

Nerds and engineers spend a lot of time talking on the internet. Not all bassists are nerds and sound engineers, but some are.

Given the above facts, where do you think you are more likely to learn something true and scientific about bass gear?

a. On the stage of your favorite rockstar bassist?
b. An endorsement ad for a manufacturer's product
c. From the dude at Guitar center in the bass department.
d. Your hunch based on what little you know of home stereo/car speakers.
e. A psychic reading tea leaves.
f. An argument on Talkbass between some engineers who work for major speaker manufacturers.
g. All of the above.
h. None of the above.

If youre going to have dummy cabs on stage just for looks, go big or go home.

Here we see another unique configuration. In this case, the desired effect is to overload the cabinets until they have flames shooting out of them. The time I saw Slayer with this setup was one of the greatest days of my life.
 
As bass players. We have the option of bringing our rigs or using a preamp and go DI. For me. I always bring @ least 1 cabinet for any function! I want to hear n feel what I am playing. Like a drum set. How many guys use e-kits? Not many.
In relation to powering speakers. You see what I use. I can modulate what the application calls for. You have to know your wattage and impedance. Its really not that difficult. When you biamp speakers. Specific frequiences go to a 1x15 or a pair of 2x10s.
By doing this you can manipulate the crossover point and relieve stress on the speakers according to what frequencies you want to give.
This is the main selling point on a Ampeg Svt 4 Pro. Yes there are heads that sound better. But how many of them can give u 1600 Watts Mono or 925 watts stereo per channel x2 (1850) @ 2 ohms per?? And still have a tube preamp???

Okay, then explain why this rig didn't go up in smoke during the 12 years I gigged with it:
Ampeg B1 Hartke XL 1x15 and SWR Workingman 2x10. Had all the power I needed and sounded great.
I used to work in a rehearsal studio, each room was housed with a Hartke bass rig, 4x10 1x15 stack. We had to install fuses in the speaker lines to the cabinets because the bands kept blowing speakers. Guess which speaker blew most often?

Not the 15", it was usually one of the 10" aluminum cones that ripped.
