The basic flaw in the p-bass

Yes, and it boosts the signal in that range where it wasn't boosted before. Call it what you want, but a rose by any other name...

I was having trouble with the word "boost" because I was relating it to how an active circuit works, and I wasnt seeing where it was getting the energy from to increase the output to that frequency range.

Believe it or not, I am not closed minded and make an effort to understand how things work


But as far as the op goes, there is no real low end loss.

We've come full circle! However I disagree to an extent. You do lose some mids but it's hardly exclusive to the P Bass. His others should be this way too.
 
Agree, but you "lose" the low end "boost" and people perceive a low end loss. You can see it on the graph. The peak at 500 Hz gives way to a peak at 3000 Hz (remember it's a log scale, that's 3000 not 1300).

I equate low end to anything under 300 hz. I can see someone confusing low mids for lows though. I surely wouldnt call it a flaw, just an unavoidable tonal characteristic.

Well, even if it is worthy of being called a flaw (I don't think so), it's a flaw common to all passive tone circuits and it's really a "low end" (actually mid) loss so much as a low end gained or not gained. Certainly not something to single out the P Bass for.
 
that's what I'm seeing in that example too. And it's louder at 500Hz with tone control all the way down than with tone control all the way up (hence again the term "boost" being used here, while I would say for accuracy that we're more honestly taking an existing frequency boost in the pickup/circuit and moving it around rather than actually adding a newly invented/created boost). Those frequencies will be different with different pickups, caps, and pots however.
That's what I took it to mean, as well. That would also explain why some can hear it and some can't.

I think we are on the same page. I think a frequency shift may be the best way to describe what is happening. I think with an audio taper pot on the tone control. The shift would be smoother and you wouldnt have such a drastic like in your sound clip. As one frequency increases one rolls off and it would happen seamlesly.
 
The basic flaw in the P bass is that it's not technologically advanced to the point where you can just deflate and inflate it so that it can fit in your pocket with your wallet and keys.

Aparently you weren't at Summer NAMM. They introduced that very feature. I played one and it was the lightest bass I've ever played. Of course if it has a tort guard on it you have to remove it first before deflating because you can't deflate tort.
