You don't really get an idea of how chunky from the pics, but my Benavente 51 model fivers have the chunkiest necks I've ever played. They're excellent basses, you can feel them rumble even when unplugged.

Amen to that. I've always noticed that 9/10, a bass with a chunky neck is going to rumble so much that it's silly, unplugged included.

All my basses with chunky necks are incredibly resonant. I have no doubt it's because of the huge hunk of funky chunk on each of them.

I'll try a Gibson Thunderbird if I can find one. I'm a fan of narrow nuts and meaty backs. A narrow nut isn't essential for me, but it does make the neck feel absolutely perfect when combined with a 1" back. I've noticed that Gibson basses don't have necks anywhere near as skinny as Fender necks. It seems to me Gibson's got the right idea in that regard.

This is true. My EB-2 has a noodle of a neck by width, but it has a round back and that makes it feel right in a way no Fender can match. I played an Epi Thunderbird (Classic?) of some kind at lunchtime today, and it had a satisfyingly round neck. I have played a Gibson 'Bird on occasion to see what those are like - gotta love patient people at the guitar shop! Anyway, those necks are very consistent in their profile from nut down, and they are round. They are narrow by my aircraft carrier standards, but they are not flattened out. I like wide as well as deep, so those aren't 100% perfect, but they feel a whole lot better than a Fender neck.

One of these days I'll post some pictures of the basses I'm talking about and qualify for a chunk number. In the mean time, girth matters.

I wish Fender would go back to big necks standard on all their basses. I read somewhere that the neck on Sting's favorite bass is around .95" deep. It made me weep with tears of jealousy.

In comparison, I played a Fender Geddy Lee neck the other day. I wept over how awful it was, and wept a little more knowing that people actually enjoy this neck.

I understand different strokes for different folks, but few manufacturers are willing to support variety in neck profile. So yes, it is scary that the skinny neck crowd seems to be winning out.

My Sadowskys have medium profile necks -- compared to the chunky Benaventes, anyway. I'm disappointed that many consider Sadowsky necks to be chunky.

Hell, lots of people consider a standard Warmoth neck to be too chunky, when in reality it's barely chunky.

"Different strokes for different folks." Meh. Players got along just fine for many years when Fender produced one kind of neck. Besides, a thick Fender neck is still skinny compared to an upright neck.

The big thing seems to be getting a stupid thin neck like the Geddy Lee and then setting it up with stupid low action. "Look how fast it is!" and all that nonsense. Funny, Billy Sheehan plays a *very* thick neck and he's one of, if not the, fastest bass players alive. Yamaha isn't shy about saying it has a big neck either.

I don't know how anyone plays a neck that's Geddy Lee thin. Any time I try to play a neck like that, it's hell on the muscles in my hand and my wrist. It's much easier to play with proper technique on a thick neck, not to mention it's also much easier to wrap your thumb around if you so desire.

That is an '08 I know they change the neck a year or 2 ago to be like the 4003's slim profile , lots of folks were *** over the baseball bat . I however wouldn't change a thing ! :bassist:

I bought a 4003 from fleabay recently, and it should arrive today sometime. It is a 1998, and I'm hoping that's one of the chunkier vintages. I guess that's this evening's entertainment, assuming it arrives as it should. That 4004 neck looks pretty good to me.

Sounds like a lot of people on TB. "TOO CHUNKY" is often said. "NO SUCH THING" is my response.

Slim profiles. Ugh. That effectively derails any plan I might have had for a Rickenbacker. :spit:

It is reasonably round. There's no roadkill flat spot on the back, so it feels far better to my hands than a new one. I wouldn't call it chunky, exactly, but then I eat jalapenos and think they are reasonably flavorful. It's all relative.

Why yes, I believe it does. I should probably add the Sting bass to the list too.

I thought about one of those for a long time. Alas, I'm one of the ones who can't get over the whole "Stinglay" thing. Why they went ahead with that design decision is beyond me.

My US custom shop First Act Delgada has a chunky neck. It's not P width at the nut, probably about 1.6" (haven't measured it) but its thicker than all of my other bass necks including my Classic Stingray. My 'Ray has a hefty neck too... very substantial but totally comfy.ImageUploadedByTalkBass1377368276.247014.jpg
