Not sure if counts, I have a Squier Matt Freeman P Bass...but it is the chunkiest neck I've played...and I am really diggin' it. Love the P Bass!

What's the proper measuring procedure?

Necks have been the downfall of Fender IMO. So many people on TB say "Buy MIA... Everything else is crap."

But, due to the awful POS necks I haven't found a single, modern, MIA Fender that I like.

The majority of Fender necks are terrible. Many people consider the Geddy Lee neck tops. I consider it to be a piece of junk. If the neck isn't fat, it might as well be unplayable in my book.

Nut width is not a factor in a chunky neck. A neck needs to measure .85" or more front to back to be considered chunky.

Lol, IMO when you compare the price/performance+quality ratio, it's really the MIA ones that are crap. I've played a number of MIA Fenders and found no reason to buy one over a good Squier. It's just not worth the markup.

My Marco TFL PJ4, i prefer thicker necks as they keep me from playing too many notes and concentrating on the groove. Maro made me custom made neck has the familiar Jazz Bass profile and 1.5" nut but about twice as thick as your avg J Bass, along with a matte finish this thing is like butter.

I dunno dude. Billy Sheehan's neck is quite substantial and he gets in plenty of notes. I honestly don't believe neck size has any relation to speed.

That jazz neck sounds absolutely heavenly though.

Not width at nut, they're talking about front to back thickness.

No it does not. Nut width has nothing to do with a chunky neck.

I see that you have finish cracks along your skunk stripe. My 73 P-bass fell off a stand and got a 3" finish crack along the skunk stripe, but the neck adjusts and still works well, so I'm not too concerned.

Not concerned either, as the neck is very stable, structurally solid and the truss rod works well. I've had the '75 only for 16 months, so I don't know its' history. As I posted, the bass has obviously been used hard and probably abused as well (lots of bumps and nicks on the neck and body, had to clean old duct tape gunk off the body after buying the bass), but after cleaning and setup it is in perfect working condition.

Count me in as one that likes the chunkier necks, although at this time my only bass that counts is my upright

I have a few bass guitars, but none are quite right. I've found I prefer the wider nut on the p-bass to my jazz, but my Squier P is only about .75 thick at the first fret. Been looking at the Steve Harris, Roger Waters, and Classic 50's for their thicker necks for that reason.

Lately though, I've been quite tempted to pick up an aftermarket neck for the Squier, as it will be much less than buying a new bass. Just need to find who makes a good one with the right specs.

I should measure the necks on my bass guitars. The upright is probably about two inches or more deep, so it qualifies, but I don't know about the rest. The P is plenty wide, and that disguises how deep it is. The Ric and EB-2 are pretty narrow, so they feel deeper than they probably are. The 'Bird? It is the mystery machine. If I remember to measure them, I'll post results.

I love 1 7/8" wide 5-strings with deep-C neck profiles. Fat is where it's at.

My Dingwall ABZ 5 doesn't count, too shallow (although the tone in series mode could fool you into thinking it had a baseball-bat neck). My Home-made fiver counts, but you can't have it.

My Indonesian, MF blowout Ibby ATK 305 is a chunky C. So was the CAR Squier Vintage Modified Precision V I checked out yesterday. So much more comfortable than the American Deluxe Jazz V they had, with its shallower, almost D shape.
