My only dedicated combo amp (I am a bass beginner), an Ashdown Studio 8:

There is another amp, that was originally intended as a bass amp, my Supro 1697T/S6497 Combo Tremolo. It is a two channel version of the Thunderbolt, with a Normal Channel and a Tremolo Channel. It currently sits on my workbench, getting rebuilt. When done, I'll give it a try as a bass amp, but I worry more about the 57 year old Jensen C12-PS speaker.
Would these qualify me as a member of the Combo Club?

MadJack, you had me at the Ashdown! Welcome to the Combo Club, our latest member, and friend. You will be known now and forever as member #271. With that comes lovely door prizes, but since someone stole the clubhouse door last week I can only offer you a hearty, "Welcome to the Party!"
If it was me, I'd skip running your bass through a speaker that's almost as old as the rest of us and, IMHO, irreplaceable. Hell, I'd strum lightly with my guitar too! The low frequencies would be too much for the driver to handle, especially if you turned it up a bit. Now that's only one musician's opinion to another; you do what you want to do. Let's see if anyone else chimes in with an opinion.
Either way, glad to have you aboard. We can always use another Floridain. Enjoy!

Doc, it's you! I always envisioned you with instrument and speakon cables hanging around your neck as the next science project began. Maybe it's just me, but I think you look pretty cool with that Ric hanging around you instead. I'm thinking your Hofner fingers would've thought you went mad with that massive neck, but I want to know more about the Traynor combo. Did ya get it and if so, what part in the plan will it play? I gotta know!
I did get the Traynor combo. I like it, but the tone is not as good as my Vox hybrid. The goal originally was to run the Vox hybrid into the effects return, so I could use the 200 watts of the Traynor and get the Vox tone. Unfortunately the tone is a bit thinner with the line out as compared to the speaker out. The combo also has the capacity of external drivers up to 4 Ohms. So I hooked up my 1510 cab and shook the block. I am still on the fence a bit about the purchase, and need some time to play with it. Both my son and partner are demanding of my time, which is great but takes away from bass time. More later!
PS. The neck was too huge on the Ric, and the bass felt a bit unwieldy since I am so used to a small Hofner, but it still felt awesome! I am happy that I got to play some bucket list basses lately with the Ric and the SG. The Hofners are still my preference for sure.

Thank you 'Dog for the concern bordering panic, but somewhere in our past pages I explained what happened and thought I fixed the problem. Obviously, what I think and what is reality can often be two different things, but MrUsefulAlien took a powder, at least for now, because he didn't have a bass combo and I wrongly thought he did. So I replaced his name with John Paul S @ #269. Everyone after that should be okay.
People, this is exactly why someone needs to take the helm here in '22. The longer the list, the harder it's getting for me and my pre-dementia mind. Is there no one pout there with a heart big enough to become the new FL in the next 24 hours? If interested, let us know. Otherwise, June 1st, 2022, or at #300, whichever comes first. I'm sure you're all tired of me whining about this subject, but it's time for a change before I post the same name in the next 29 spots!

I knew the hooded figure I shoo'd off my porch two days ago looked vaguely familiar.
I was hoping you'd be online. Happy New Year, my friend and Beatle Bass compatriot. I blame VOX for the poor sound you heard. For some reason, they don't seem to be interested in cabinet emulation coming out of their line outs. I'd had the Vox bass rig up for the past week or so, using it as both a bass and guitar rig, replacing my Ampeg DI for my Vox FX pedal. I thought it sounded pretty darn good too through the speaker like you said, but knowing the line out from the Super Beetle is a straight shot to my interface, bypassing the NuTube circuit completely, I never use it. That's my thought to your plight as well.
Unless you'd rather invest your cash into something else down the road, I might hang onto the Traynor long enough to really put it through its paces. I have zero experience with Traynors, but it looks to be a solid, long-lasting piece of amp there and with some monkeying around, you should have some useable tone for gigging.
That's my two cents worth for ya. As far as how to make yourself available for the important others in your life, have you thought of cloning? I have, but I don't have enough cereal boxtops right now to buy a cloning kit through the mail...
On an unrelated note, I restrung my Rogue this past week after breaking a G-string. It sounds better than ever and each string is truly balanced. I can't remember how long I kept the previous flats on, but I thought I'd get a little more time out of them, though the other three strings looked to be in perfect condition. While I'm glad I made the change, I'm curious how long you get out of a set of strings on your basses? Do you play flats or something else? I'm not gonna believe all the posts telling me players get five years out of a set. Or I just got a lesser-than-normal G because it never sounded balanced with the other strings. I also hear LaBella tends to have more G's break, or is that the same for all string manufacturers?
Sorry for all the Qs, but this is the best my bass has possibly ever sounded and I'm curious as to why. Anyone can ch9me in on this too, not just the doctor, though his rates are usually lesser than Soul Reflection's!

I have flats on my green Hofner, but rounds on the other 3 that are in rotation including my 68 (which is my number 1). I prefer rounds on bass, as I am really time travelling bass player from the 80s. I buy cheap Hofner roundwound strings. That are not that great, but they are cheap, provide some funds for Hofner, are a light gage and guarantee to fit. For some reason short scale bass strings are too short for Hofners, and hence one has to buy special strings for them. I did have a set of La Bella white tapes for my Hofner that I liked a lot, but I am too cheap to buy any at this point. The Hofner strings do sound good, but I am sure if I paid more for better strings I would notice the difference. I can't recall the flats I am using, but they sound good enough too.

Six weeks is the shortest amount of time strings spent on any of my basses. I know this because I just replaced a very nice set of Brite Flats with EB Group IV .040 - .095 flats on My 'Ray.
Dante probably proscribed a place in Hell for bassists who put flats on a StingRay, and I took the chance. By some other chance, Combo Club all-nite laundromat and silent movie theater patron @biguglyman just swapped out Low Tension Flats for Brite Flats.
The Balanced Nickels on my Cat bass are eight months old and aren't going anywhere. BNs are a great gift to short scale players — they were engineered for short scale basses! They're in a Goldilocks zone right now and stay right where they are.
The Low Tension Flats on the Chowny CHB-1 stay right where they are too. Broke them in over 10 months, and pulled them to try Dunlop flats. Put the LTFs back after 8 months, and the silks look tatty now because of that.
In a space so distant in time you can detect the red shift, I am a stainless steel rounds player. A set of Roto 66s lasts ... oh one rehearsal or so. Can't afford this and stretch the time on board to six or eight weeks. Discover the magik of Dean Markley Super Rounds, and find they're good for about 6 months.
... oh yeah, here in the future My 'Ray comes back from the luthier with fresh fret work. The StingRay will never wear stainless steels again.
... ... I do already have a combo (EBS Drome 15) and pseudo combo (Bergantino HT112 + GB shuttle attracted), and will now welcome junior to the amp family.

That’s just one more reason to respect the hell out of Sir Paul right. His transition between the Hofner and the Ric was as smooth as butter. Like. No big deal. Like. Yes. Big deal. The Rics necks always seemed comparable to a Gibson LP in that the action was so even and low and light to the touch. But both uncomfortable for me to play. I need to be able to dig in. But maybe that’s because my technique isn’t great. But both are heavy and just feel strange in my hands.
I have to agree wit the Fearless Leader about @MadJack dilemma. A 50 year old paper cone speaker is gonna be tough to keep alive. Maybe if you really loved it you could get it re-conned. The paper becomes brittle over time and the rubber around it disintegrates. Just an age thing. And theirs lots of new replacement speakers that are great for reasonable prices. Just my opinion for what it’s worth.

I never change my bass strings (or rarely would be more accurate) here’s what James Jamerson thought:
Jamerson used La Bella heavy-gauge (.052–.110) flatwound strings which were never replaced, unless a string broke. He did not particularly take care of the instrument, as he stated: "The dirt keeps the funk".
So I’m “keeping the funk.” Lol.
I’ve never broken a bass string either.
I really want to try some tapewound strings so I may be changing strings soon. The Fender 58s maybe? The Labellas of which I love their flats and the Rotos in short scale only have 65-115s I think and my bass was factory set up with 45-90s so I’m afraid of throwing it all out of kilter. Any thoughts anyone?
