The Combo Club

Well, that jury-rigged "combine-o" of mine with the Elf110 cab and Bam200 head really seemed like the answer to what I was looking for. {-For a little while anyway?}
However............. I had a Bam200 before and it would get moderately warm after playing for a while, but this one I have now gets really ~hot!! After an hour's playing it was too hot to comfortably handle! No way am I keeping this!!
A possible burns or fire hazard?? Sheeesh!! -Back to Amazon it goes!

~Heck with it! I'm tired of searching and looking around! -I think I might just get me a little Markbass combo after all and use it along with the Elf110 cab as an extension when needed. I didn't want to spend that much but maybe I can get a decent used one somewhere..
Anyone have any opinions re the 801 and the 101 combos? I'm leaning toward the smaller 801; they're both 60W and the lesser weight and ultra convenience of the smaller one is appealing...

A little audio technology theory assistance here please?
~Let's say someone took a deep breath and invested in a PJB Cub Pro combo, which has it's own twin 5" speakers and an extension speaker line out and 120W. Now the rare (and just about only) criticism I've heard about this particular PJB combo is that the smaller 5" speakers will not push out enough 'air' (sound?) to be always useful in larger settings...

However suppose one mounted this Pro Cub atop of a 10" extension speaker?
~Or to take it even further, suppose the Cub was plugged into an Ampeg 112 cab resting beneath it? -Wouldn't that increase the amount of 'air' being pushed out? Couldn't the Pro Cub then be used, say, like a PF350 head that also has it's own addl small speakers?

It seems to me that if one used the PJB Pro Cub in this manner one would then have a removable 240W 'head' that could also be used as a stand-alone 120w small combo when needed that way... ~Sort of like a Mini SVT head with it's own self-powered speakers! :speechless:

~Am I missing or understanding something here? ~:bookworm:?

If it was me(and I had the $$$*), I would get a Cub Pro and the 10" ext. spkr.(or Ampeg 112 cab)from a place with a very good return policy and try it out to see if it gave me what I was looking to achieve. Then either say "Eureka!" and keep it/them, or "Crap!" and take/send 'em back.

*I don't:(

I do greatly admire your thinking in this matter sir! ~And since I already have the aforementioned cabs I need only get the PJB Cub Pro from a place with an excellent return policy...

Sounds to me like you're working hard not to rock an Elf combo with the Elf cab it's designed to pair with .... Elf head + PJB cabs =/= PJB Combo + Elf cab. Different animal. It's your spacebucks. <shrug>

Yes I like the Elf. With the full range PJB cabs, I hear exactly what the Elf is. If I drive the same PJB cabs with a Genzler Magellan 350 I will hear the Genzler tone because the PJB cabs are full range and neutrally voiced. If I drive the same PJB cabs with a Mesa Subway 350 I will hear the Mesa. If I pair the Mesa or Genzler with an Ampeg cab I will likely hear more Ampeg voicing than Mesa or Genzler voicing.

I'd sooner rock the Elf combo and Elf cab together. And I don't notice the fan on my Elf :p

So if you got the Elf combo which would you prefer? The 110 or 108? (Same wattage, same price also...)
Yes I am still considering this option... ~Only thing is if I did go this way then I'll prolly never get such a good opportunity (or excuse?) again to try out a good PJB amp.. Also, as far as *spacebucks* goes, the Cub Pro is but $150 more than the Elves.

My personal choice would be the 110 cab and 110 combo for a real one hand carry. The combo itself would probably meet most needs for small gigs.

I tested out the 8" combo at Sweetwater in the spring and thought it was notably louder than my Double Four, and could cover most coffeeshops I've played. With a drummer? An extension cab may be needed. No experience with the 10" unit, because I was prioritizing on size, and at the time, the smaller was also less expensive.

The Elf is its own Thing. My original use/need for the Elf was a stopgap until my combo and I were in the same place at the same time again. Discovered I like it but it is neither flat nor transparent ( neither is the TC BAM200 ;) ). Players who play / played the original Trace gear confirm the Elf is quite close with minimal controls IIRC. Those guys were rockers — not jazz cats.

The Elf combo is also half the weight of my PJB combo .... If memory serves @Greywoulf factors weight, too. Heck yeah I would rock an Elf combo
but I strictly don't need more amplification right now.

What's on deck for me — real, not imaginary LOL — are new electronics for this

and of course lessons. That said, I have homework to do right now.
