The Combo Club

Quite well actually and makes me wonder about the 50% of reviewers that panned this bass:

  • ‘Awkward playing position’; For me it was pick up and play. No trouble with ergonomics,
  • ‘Thin sound’; starting with e.q. From other basses yes. 30 seconds of specific e.q..= problem solved. Add foam mute near bridge for a tight thumpy ‘Motown sound’ and still tons of flexibility electronically with deluxe 3 pickup, 5 position strat-style rocker switch..
  • ‘Body too big’; I was truly concerned about this complaint ‘cause I like sleek. It just feels different than a J or P-bass, but so does the Jaguar and I like them look of this more. It kills visually. I like the late 50’s early 60’s visual impact for a retro act.
Yeah there’s stuff wrong with the “68 EB-3 I love also. I just don’t remember what it was.

Digging the pups!

Started playing bass again in a new project and picked up a Rumble 500 today!

Mbell75, welcome to the club! I have to ask if you’re a member without looking on my sheet. Your name sounds familiar, but if you’re new to us, would you like a membership number? You seem pumped about your acquisition and have now submitted a picture. Let me know.

Thanks for dropping by!

My very small Traynor SB106 combo along side my Gretsch G2224 Junior Jet bass...

B, I love it! Have cool-looking casters underneath for easy travel. Very cool story too. Caught that same tour in the Quad Cities back in ‘79. That was my second time I saw Rush. First time in ‘76; my first “real” rock concert. Still have the pictures one of the guys in my group took. He’d run right up to the stage, snap the shot, and retreat back until the next attempt.

No smartphones either. Heaven! Rex Smith opened and Max Webster followed. All for under ten bucks, if I remember. Bought a pink Rush t-shirt of the first album cover. Wore that thing until it was in tatters. Yeah, I like Rush. The cool thing my son loved them too, including all the albums after Moving Pictures.

Thanks for the wonderful trip down memory lane.
Those were some great days. I kept a scrapbook of ticket stubs, backstage passes and pics from that era. My first real concert was Bad Company - Kansas opened and was touring the Masque album - they blew BC off the map! I'll never forget that one - 8th row center - $12! I don't think I paid more than $18 to see a show during that time. We'd camp out for tickets (Pink Floyd Animals tour, Eric Clapton, etc). I really need to perhaps try to transfer my scrapbook to digital format. Got some unbelievable pics of Rush from the Johnson City, TN show - was able to get between barracade and stage with my Pentax ME super! Got some pics of Geddy where I'm literally propping my elbow on the stage while looking up at him.

Yes my friend - awesome memories!

Busy now, but similar doozies to share when I get a few minutes.

Great stories. Geddy is my favourite player, and I got to see them twice in the last 10 years so I'm very happy about that.

Hey kids and IAGTRPLYR. Didnt you remember making me the treasurer Mike loll..it was a great holiday as well..ohh I promise to pay it back I promise...lolll..just joking.
Well I had a horrible 6 months off..thanks for asking loll
I include some pics from about September when my internet was changing over from ADSL to our new Aussie nationwide Govt. system called The NBN..Fibre to the home or nearest street junction node. Well before I could even get it installed I had phone/internet issues as you will see by the photos i posted. All my gas, phone, electricity and water connections had to be repaired which took the best part of 3 months effectively rendering Christmas a tad bleak, so we visited England for something to do loll Anyway with all that fixed while we were away, the new connections were made and a new modem added for this new technology The NBN..sighhh. Its working fine now but it was a painful time between about Sept to Dec last year. The wife and I took that surprise holiday to the UK after her daughter from Wiltshire UK visited here for a flying in and out visit with her hubby who had business in our city. We dropped everything literally and purchased plane tickets to the UK and flew back home with my new daughter-in-law whom to that point i'd never met..so we enjoyed a few months in The UK staying with the wife's daughter and hubby. Great place Old Blighty (England)..lots to see when I was there with my UK wife (Charly) and her rellies. Sorry guys and gals I didnt have much choice but to just up and shoot off as it was a spur of the moment thing and we literally threw a suitcase of clothes together, grabbed our visas and jetted off without even a second thought or a laptop..never mind I thought..we'll not be gone long..lol Nobody (her daughter included) seems to be internet connected in the UK so we never got to connect when there..oh well we had lots to see and do anyway..but I was thinking about you all even so.
Anyway on the way home we decided to check out her son in New Zealand..talk about a long way round to get home lol. Back about late February and Charly is in the kitchen a few days after getting home and I hear an almighty crash..up I get from my recliner and find her laying on the kitchen floor groaning. For all of you who remember her episode last year of broken ribs...yep she landed on them again after hooking her foot in a chair, tripping and going down like a bag of the proverbial. Yep 3 ribs bruised and the same one broken again. When she does it...she does it well. I havent been that good myself with arthritis issues in the neck and lower spine and both of us have been a miserable pair during March, April, so I thought its high time I got back on the net and found my way back to my Combo friends. Why howdy all...how's it been going with you lot...better than my story I hope lol
G-Day to all the regulars and new members...hi IAG (Mike), SR, GP (how'd that colonthingy go Mike btw?), Doc I, Ghosty, Morri, Doggy and Mrs Dog, Stumbo and heaps of others I havent mentioned. I have a lot of pages to backtrack and catch up on so bear with me for a few days.
Woo it's nice to be home relatively pain free at the moment and Charly also for a change loll We have admittedly been home a couple months but with doc visits, rehabilitation for the wife, sorting out the house again, visiting, testing this new connection ..wooo i can download at speeds like never before now it was worth the hassle of the huge front of house dig last year to get it all sorted out. We were having all sorts of problems with electricity blackouts, water problems, gas supply issues, phone not working at times etc etc etc..check the pics..it was all caused by a giant Gum Tree's roots..the roots got into cabling, tubing, piping..lifting, cracking it all lolll That took at least 4 different Utility departments to get their collective heads together and FIX IT PLEASE CRIED POOR GIFF.
Anyway guys and gals its great to be back home and amongst our online friends once more. Havent even poked my head in the Rumble room yet..first things first loll.
Ok i'm off to bed now..will check back later..its weird plunking away on a keyboard after all this time loll

Always a good idea to keep a small tin with a marble or three inside to rattle as you shake your head "no" to make things perfectly clear.

Welcome back!

Some phone pics of your stuff would be cool as a temp display!
Ha - you and my phone are smarter than I am! Found the scrapbook, some of the tic stubs have faded over time, but many survived nicely. Many backstage passes survived. My camera on my phone is obviously not great - had a hard time with the Rush pics got a few to come out decently. Avg ticket price to see a concert in 79-81 - 9 bucks!

It also looks like Mike has picked up a new title from his original Club Secretary to now being known as Fearless Leader..boy are the times a-changin'.
My lovely wife Charly has been taking more pics of my gear...I guess it's hard for her not to fall over it and break another rib..after all most of our lounge room is like a Combo Club Showroom and easy to trip over something if not watching out. She even stuck her tiara in this picture on top of my DBX DI box..see close up pic..lol
