The Combo Club

SoulReflection, you're bringing back all those neat memories of a bygone time. Rotary phones...wow! I'm imagining that Admiral console getting cranked up to the tunes of...let me guess...The Dave Clark Five? No, Beach Boys, right?

Ventures, Kingsmen, Beatles, Booker T., Temptations, Sam & Dave, Wilson Picket, Otis Redding, Supremes, Gladys Knight, Marvin Gaye, just to name a few ;).

The brand name is 'On.Stage'. That's what it says on it anyway. I got it from a music store in Canada. If you want to know which one let me know.

Here's today's experiment except for the fact it's as far as I've gotten. Coincidentally, this stand is an On Stage brand too. I've had a couple of them and they've been quite sturdy. Little different than the doctor's. After I finish some social studies curriculum writing I plan on testing out the Rumble and stand.

Looks great! I like it because, obviously, it keep the bass more in your face, but I also can avoid bending down to make adjustments. I wonder, though, if the tone is affected by the amp not being directly on the ground? Any thought?

PS I'm also a teacher!

@iagtrplyr , just noticed that doing a search for "Combo Club", this thread does not show up until the second page of the search. Wondering if dropping the "no respect, etc." might make it easier for those trying to find it? Wouldn't want to lose the history though.

Great thread, thanks again for taking it on!

That's an outstanding idea, SR. I'm not sure whether it'd be a request to the mods or beginning a whole new thread, which might be a mod request as well. Any thoughts out there?

Great that you ask, Doc. Being a teacher, like you, I decided to try a little experiment which anyone can do at home if you have goggles. ;) So yesterday I took a pic of my tone controls while the Rumble was on the floor (Exhibit A), and today took yet another shot of the top panel while on the stand (Exhibit B). Now I'll admit the tone wasn't exact, but both settings were pleasing to my ears at their respective height. The floor is all bottom without much highs as expected, while the stand was lighter bass, clearer mids, and a little bit on top. The stand was way punchier than the floor and that's what I tried in vain to achieve with the 115 cab and couldn't. Clean and punchy!

The other interesting outcome was how the gain knob and vintage button played into this little endeavor. Three years ago i couldn't make either sound worth its weight no matter what i did. The 12" driver is a different beast, IMHO, and allowed me to mess around with those controls alone and together to create some nice nuances. If I wanted a little more fullness I went up a bit on the gain. If I wanted to jam with Bachman-Turner Overdrive's (today's weapon of choice) "Blue Moanin," I'd kick in the vintage for some fat, compressed tone along with the gain. Minus the gain and the vintage still sounded great, but was a tad lighter. It's the best way I've found so far to keep the mids that I'm used to with my Ampeg gear. I love the classic Fender tone, but sometimes Papa wants another vibe!

All in all, this amp has me already playing more and very much enjoying what I'm hearing. All for 300 bones too. I've ordered the cover too which should be here in a couple of weeks. This gal will be heading outside of the bedroom.

So the amp stays on the stand until further notice and my biggest problem has become if I ever get my Markbass Micromark 801 out again. Back to the lab!

If it will make the club easier to find I'm all for it, and I do think it could help. I wouldn't want to do it, though, if it meant losing the content of this thread so far.

Agreed. If we could archive it and begin a new thread with the appropriate name change (I'm thinking "The Combo Club"), I know it'd increase our membership. Let me poke around and see what I can find out.

So I just finished writing the TB folks and here's what I asked:

Hi TB,

I'm trying to revive the Combo Amp Club from a three-hibernation, and some of us were wondering how we can change the thread title from "No Respect" I Rock a Combo Club!!!! to something that'll attract fans of combos. I was thinking, "The Combo Club."

How do we go about doing that? We don't want to lose the 18 or so pages of history, but feel the name is hurting the ability to gather new members. I know when threads reach a certain number (1,ooo posts?) they move onto a new thread and maintain a link to the old pages. Is that something we can do too, or do we have to wait? We're currently at #349. Any advise or assistance would be much appreciated.

Thanks a bunch,

Mike (iagtrplyr)

My amps-all combos BTW, the Kasino is my practice amp-too heavy to grunt into the van:help:View attachment 3056839
Hey GonePlaid. Recognized your name from the Rumble Club.

Very nice array of combos, you have there. Tell us, how does the Kasino sound versus your other combos? I know there's a size difference, I suppose, but I'm curious to overall sound quality. BTW, you're member #68! Thanks.

The Kasino is a 1970, 200W(supposedly) w/ 2x15 speakers. I'm the original owner. It's LOUD. I've never had it over 1/2 volume and it moves a lotta air. Get below A and it "farts" some depending on how much bass is EQed in. If you go on You tube, put in "Driftwoods of Treasure Coast", There are a few videos where you can hear it. Also a few w/ a rolled and pleated Kustom w/ 1x15 but I sold that one.

What's up with that bullet lamp, in the upper left of your pic, pointing at the ceiling?

Is that another "down under" thing? :eyebrow::).
Loll nahh..not a down-under thing..more like an up-top kinda thing loll
Its a double lamp fitted with LED bulbs..thats the upper bullet lamp you can see. I usually put it on when not home or taking pics in the room...it throws a great white light reflection back from the ceiling downwards for photos and makes a great glow from outside the window curtains when not home for security. The lower lamp on that pole is always on and throwing a beautiful white LED glow over the basses either side of the TV. I have a Ric 4003 near that lower lamp and a Peavey T40 that catches the lamp light and both look great highlighted on their stands when not using them. I can watch TV and admire the basses at the same time. I change them over occasionally for other basses in my collection. I like a featured collection to watch when there is rubbish on TV. What else has a retired guy to gaze at that is as worthwhile as his favourite bass guitars and TV at the same time loll. The other basses in my collection sit in the rack other side of the room loll. They all get an airing at gig time although I have my favs. Each one of my basses sounds great through the Rumble 500C...I just have a few minor tweaks on the amp for tone with each axe. You can see both lamps on the pole in the pic with my Music Man SR5. I hope that explanation "enlightened" you as to my bullet lamps lol.

Sweet rig, Giffro! It looks loud just sitting there. BTW, there are those who are hung up on combo amps sitting on top of extension cabs. The thought is it takes away the convenience of the combo in the first place.

While I'll admit there's more effort in failing the extra piece of rig, if a player wants his or setup that way, who are we to argue? Combos, IMHO, in any way, shape, or form works, no problem. Otherwise, I myself lose the bought-and-paid-for versatility from my own Micromark 801.
