My parents bought my first bass in '61 or '62. It was a P copy from Japan. Couldn't afford an amp, but managed to hook it up to their Admiral console stereo (when they weren't around)...sounded pretty good and the record player was convenient for picking up and dropping the needle while learning songs. Good thing I didn't break the needle or sewing would have been the least of my worries

My first amp was actually a combo. A National, open back guitar amp. Sounded like crap, but I didn't know any better...just thought it was under-powered! Thinking about it, I was lucky I didn't give up completely. After all, we were just getting used to those rotary dial telephones and party-lines
