Do you take your combo and extension cab to all gigs? Is there really rig overkill? Or is rig overkill a Good Thing?

Asking (in part) because a 3-5 kg carry with a small low wattage combo looks like Win to me if just playing a Sunday brunch. Or pack 20-25 kg of muscle combo + extension for that whap that only comes with a lot of drivers?

Here’s my latest in the world of rigs a gigs and I think this relates to M’s similar tale of decision-making.

So the word came down from Rev. John that BADD, his worship group in Ohio, will be playing at the church site where his and two other churches are currently consolidating. In fact, we’ll be the band christening their first summer get together. I may have already mentioned this in a previous post, but my mind wanders now and then.

So my dilemma: Johns buying a beautiful home here in Iowa to retire in a few years from now (yeah, he’s known as an early shopper) and will be here in three weeks to close the sale. He’ll be spending about a week here doing house updating, etc, and the him and I are making our annual pilgrimage back to Ohio for four days.

Still getting to the dilemma: we’ll be driving in the famed large-as-a-barge Mercury Marquis, and while there’s room I’m gearing taking the Stage 800. Though it’s the reason I bought for, I’m concerned there may not be enough room when I add suitcases, my basses ( bringing both along), various gear bags, and other items.

Last year I only took my Ampeg PF-800 because he’s got a PF-210 cab in Columbus, but that’s gone and my plan was to run the Fender combo with the ‘Peg cab because we’ll be outside with no PA assistance. While the backseat and trunk are generous, I don’t think there’ll be enough room for the combo.

So what to do? I’m kicking around getting a bass amp head, like an self to throw in the bag, but dang it, I want to use the Stage and she what she’ll do.

I’ll wait until he gets here on the 10th to load the amp in the car and see what happens, but I’m also looking into buying a long-distance drone that can fly out to Morrighan’s pad, lift her Elf, and be back before the 17th’s leaving date.

Other than that, life’s normal. They’ve got a few new songs to learn, including one penned by the Rev himself, so I’m looking forward to the trip. Pics to follow.

Just a semi-serious thought. Use some of those vacuum bags for compacting clothes and eliminate 1 suitcase; problem solved.

I am currently playing mainly through an Ampeg BA115 amp. I'm looking to upgrade. Have been looking at the Hartke HD500, the KB12 and KB15. Would consider other brands as well. We play mostly smaller venues, wine bars, restaurant bars and the like. Occasionally we play outdoors but in those situations I either have access to a head and cabinet
amp or going through the PA and I do have the SCR-DI to keep the Ampeg sound. We play alt-country, country and a bit of roots rock. Not an incredibly loud band as we focus more on vocals and dynamics than volume. Band includes lead guitar, rhythm guitar, banjo (aka banjitar), mandolin, hamonica and drums. Budget up to about $800 give or take. Most of my stuff is rather subtle (think Rick Danko) and I like to provide more depth to the music rather than complicated riffs. Play an Ibanez SR-700 (4 string). Looking to see what recommendations y'all come up with to narrow my search.

EDIT: Personally I love my Fender Rumble 500 Combo...I also run a Rumble 115 ext. cab if needing the extra ooompphhh.

Suitcases (Plural)???..Blimey lad rough it for a few days take a plastic Wall-Bobs bag (like in Everybody Loves Raymond episode) and fit that darn 800 in the car.

Okay members, Dennis finds himself in a space that’s been occupied by most if not all of us. I thought the big Ampeg combos, the 115 and 210, would be good considerations. Who else has a thought?

Okay members, Dennis finds himself in a space that’s been occupied by most if not all of us. I thought the big Ampeg combos, the 115 and 210, would be good considerations. Who else has a thought?

Took me years to earn my truss..those darn heavy cabs did it...ohhhh trust..i'm on holidays Mike sorry..hard chairs in a cabin..bought my laptop this time..wifi is in and out a bit..just like me..but should be home by Friday unless my back gets worse in these chairs and then we'll head home early..where's that darn truss.

Actually I’m talking one suitcase for me (or a Wall-Bob bag or two), but then John’s stuff as well, though he promised to pack less in the car coming out. I’ll be gone for four days, but will try to be as efficient as possible. As for vacuum sealing my underoos, I’ll take it under consideration, GP. I agree with ya, Giff. I gave to get that amp out in the wild and in a band setting to see what’s she really made of. Good point!

I think that’s illegal but I’ll check.

I’m so looking forward to that week in Ohio. He’s moving on from this church that he’s been at for almost 20 years as it goes into consolidation and this will most likely be the final musical production, that Sunday’s service, that the band will perform at. I’m honored he wanted me there to be part of it. Of course, it sounds a heck of a lot better with some bottom end along for the ride!
