The Combo Club

Okay fellow Rumblers, a question. Where do you typically set your gain at?

I decided to open up the 100 with the purpose of decreasing some of the foam lining out of the cab. Mission accomplished and I think from what I've heard the past 15 minutes the better. My preamp settings are pretty much the same (light on the bass and low-mid, higher on the high-mid and treble), but there is a little more air coming out now; especially since yanking out the foam directly behind the ports.

So to my question. I set the gain set at 9:00 out of habit but finally decided to boost it in order to see what comes out. Wowee, says the guy who you'd think would've tried this at some point! the push opened up the mids and made it a lot punchier. That's what's been missing. Bringing it back down to a quarter turned the tone back to oatmeal. I've been leaning on the vintage button a lot but that wasn't even as a difference-maker as just upping the gain. I heard many moons ago the Rumble's gain was more of a boost than a traditional preamp level increase and that must be true.

I'm just curious how the rest of you owners see (or hear) this difference.

Of course I don't mind. :)
The trouble is, this is my first combo, and so far my only one. I haven't played much else, I bring it when I play with others. So I have nothing to compare it to. Keep that in mind as a precaution.

I'd describe the sound as plain bass without any frills or tendencies. (Which suits me, I'm not one for subtleties in sound. Years ago, as a classical viola player, this already made me the odd one out.)

This sound cannot easily be overwhelmed. I found this out when I auditioned the loudest band I ever heard. Their guitarist built a literal wall of amps and cabs. I had significant hearing loss, luckily temporary. But my combo stayed perfectly audible, and I didn't even crank it. The thing just kept asserting itself without sounding forceful. Volume and Gain were at noon, no more. 150 Watts @ 8 Ohms.

So far, I've usually just put it on the floor. Occasionally on a crate, because some floors are too much of a resonance box.

It does, thank you very much! This is what this club is all about. Players and hobbyists alike sharing their thoughts and opinions without being told their gear is bad. We don’t always agree, but since I’ve been here I have to read anyone being rude and disrespectful towards another bass player. And if that ever happens, they’ll be dealing with my buddy, Biggie...our new club enforcer. Congrats Bigs, your 4 x 10 alone scares those under eighteen!

instrumentalist, I asked about placement of your combo because that can literally surrounds the speaker and sitting on the floor, bring its cubic, is loooow! Here’s an idea for ya: an Auralex Gramma isolation pad that you set the combo on. It gets it up a bit and wipes out the resonance caused by a hollow stage floor. I use it everywhere. Then, if you’re really a playa, add a wedge to lift the front up 30 degrees. Great combo for your combo!

A fair observation.

Would that I like to raise my own PBJ Suitcase Compact on a stand and point it up at me, the amp is engineered to be coupled with the floor and wall for proper bass response. It also has an internal HPF at 25 hz. How low can you go? What's amazing is hearing that much articulate bottom end out of a box that doesn't reach my knee....

Love the purple voodoo, lady, but we can not allow you to infringe on GP’s trademark garage door! There’s a club amendment that strictly states that unless you’ve got permission from said garage door guru. GP, what’s the deal?

Back to work after a week off. Saw some great shows (Downchild Blues Band w/Dan Akroyd and the Royal Affair Tour w/Carl Palmer, John Lodge, Asia, and Yes) with my son and had back to back gigs last Friday and Saturday. Did both gigs with the little Carvin combo. We don't play loud and had some PA support so it was all good. Friday's gig was a fill-in for some friends. Had to familiarize myself with 38 tunes I didn't know in three weeks. I pulled it off pretty well with the help of my i-pad and an app called On Song. Saturday was my usual band, Revolver, at another outdoor venue. Look behind my right leg for the Carvin. The Gatorade bottles on the rail are mine. The gloves, hydration, and some supplements seem to have the hand cramps at bay for now.

Great post, Biggie. Sounded like you had a fun time over the weekend. This proves the adage, “Who needs an SVT rig when a tiny Carvin will do the same job?” I know I’ve that adage somewhere. Very cool, my friend.

JJ, thanks for the pics. Now there’s a combo-playing bassist having a great time playing music. I know for a fact that Dubuque has had great success over the years with their various music fests. I think it’s so cool that you could rock the stage with a couple of 40-watt combos. Take that, SVT owners! :smug:
