The Combo Club

If the "small spade" was on the wire and fell off, you just have to get a replacement connector (ACE?), bare the wire and crimp the new connector on (with a wire crimper/ACE?). Does the new speaker have the same large and small connectors? If not, replace the connector on the wire with the size the new speaker has and let me know so I can introduce you to polarity. Fear not, this is actually easier than going to a dentist or waiting for your manservant (and I hope you are not referring to @G-Dog )!

Thanks SR! Polarity I got after five years selling home and car audio, and did my share of crimping too. I’m just concerned that there’s not a lot of wire coming off the amplifier to replace the spade lug with, but that’s what’s going to have to happen. Yeah, I can hit the hardware store. As for the Eminence, they’re both the same large connectors, like what I’d think would be the vast majority of speaker connections in the world. So why the large and small pair, Ampeg...huh?

The original design makes it(nearly)impossible to get the polarity bass-ackwards if replacing with an NOS speaker. Hopefully they're somehow marked +/- on the original or a schematic, then match up the Eminence. Tape it in place to test it, then solder-or wrap bare wire through the Eminence lugs.

That’s a good idea, GP. I thought just touching each other would be enough, so I slide part of the Ampeg wire on the side of the + lug and pushed the plastic cover up as high as I could go. It must’ve fallen when I re-inserted the driver back in the cab. I’ll try it again and if I can get it to work I’ll warm the soldering iron up. Thanks!

Ah, hate for a different reason...I haven't had any problems with them. I only have their SCR-DI which I don't use that much. I do appreciate their historical contribution which goes back as far as I do, which is a long time .

Nah, SR, just frustration, that’s all. I love the tone, but most low-cost amps are gonna cut corners to make it cheap. Or maybe that was intended, who knows?

Yeah, I know it's not rocket science and I was just having Saturday afternoon fun! You can always splice more wire to make it more convenient. As far as Ampeg is concerned, who knows why they would use different size lugs? Maybe its their way of telling their assemblers the difference in polarity! The new speaker has a huge increase in magnet size. It will be interesting to hear what difference in makes in sound...

For those wondering, I did this because the power stage of the rumble was damaged beyond worth repairing, I already owned the shuttle, and the kappalite was loaded in another cabinet I don't use.

Brilliant! Gotta traditional combo? Because if you do, you must join our band of merry bass players. We’re always in the lookout for talent.

Fear not, indeed, Fearink Not Leader! Manservant #000 is beink on the jobnik, already!! I haf completed updatink the Combo Club Roster links on The Club Wiki page!! No neednik to be thankink me. Is quite alright. Just doink my jobnik. . . .

Huh? ... Whatzitz? ... Wirink? . . . . Spade...lugs? I am always recommendink genuine Speakon® speaker connectors, and/or ¼" plugs. I dunno from luggink spades. Why changink perfectly goodnik speaker, anywayz? Just costink more rubles & kopeks?¿?
.

For the record, I never named my manservant, check the records. Also, being Sargeant-at-Arms doesn’t necessarily mean you’re chef, chauffeur, Butler, and footman all rolled up into one large manservant. Of course, it could I suppose.

‘Dog, we’re talking connecting the inside of the cab, not the outside. Wait, does your Studio 40 also have speakons on the inside as well? Why the heck didn’t I get that sweet little luxury? Some pooches have all the luck...

Thanks for chiming in, Friday...Er, I mean G’Dog. :smug: And a sincere thank you for updating the club’s Wiki page. Take a look at that playground of info folks. It’s worth the time.

I know! May have to do a recording or two if ya know what I mean. I may look into it later.

My mother taught me how sweet slang words of wisdom should only be used when really meant. Otherwise they lose their effectiveness.

There are a few combinations of mostly ordinary words once heard never forgotten. And really no wonder why wiser heads agree never to allow me in range of a mic.

Any reason that Frankensteining an existing combo doesn't count? It's still a head permanently attached to a speaker.

Point taken. Every now and then we catch ourselves in this Catch-22 of combo vs. separates. I've always tried to cling to the fact that a vast majority of combo amps are housed in one cabinet, like your 200c. At the flick of a wrist you can change out your Genz Benz for another head; something difficult to impossible to do with a combo. That being said, I've allowed an Ampeg B-15 because, like peanut butter and jelly, you can't really have one without the other.

Tell ya what. If one of the other members' votes to add your rig to the club I'll award you a number. I'm truly on the fence with this one. If for any other reason, I think Lowandfat should be added because he has a giant baseball head for an avatar, but I need someone to second it. M, you wanted him to play that funky music...interested? Regardless of the outcome, it was a wonderful idea to save a combo from going out to pasture. Help the man, people!

Well, it is a R200c that had a bad head and I think it would be difficult to install a new head and certainly would not spend the $$$$ for orginal equipment replacement if even available, and he has made great use of the functionality of the cabinet portion, so Hell Yes. Number this guy.

PS: That was me with the Funky Music. LOLOLOLOL

Mission accomplished! I decided to look at the situation a little harder knowing it wasn't going to be a plug 'n play option and opened up the mini-connector up to allow itself to wrap around the spade of the new speaker. Then I crimped it with needle-nose pliers before placing the rubber covering over it. Finally, taking the advice from Gone Plaid, I wrapped a little electrical tape to seal the connection up. It seemed very secure, but if there's no sound in the future I'll do some splicing and soldering.

As far as sound goes, tighter than my Uncle Leo at tab-paying time, especially with the Jazz. Some might say a little sterile and at this point, I'd agree, but give it a little time and some loud playing and I think it'll warm right up. As for the Rogue bass, it sounded warmer right away, though I know it'll deepen as time goes by.

All in all, I'd say it was a success. Didn't seem any louder, but didn't seem one bit quieter even though the amp is driving an 8-ohm speaker now, instead of the 4-ohm original. Morrighan, I think you'd be really happy with it, but the Stupider 2 comment made me think you may not want to do it yourself. A tech person could mod it for you in five minutes though so don't necessarily give up the dream. Interesting event and I learned something new about the Ampeg's innards tonight.

It was? A thousand pardons, but yes, you're right, it was. Well, Funky music requestor, you're the one to put Lowandfat on the board. Laf, congratulations, you are now to be known in these halls as Member #163! Thanks for proving the democratic process ain't dead yet.

I took apart a 6.0 combo years ago and saved the bracket. I used the shuttle with 2 Avatar 112s, not the shuttle cab it came with. I have remounted the bracket to the top of the Grumble, creating a whole new combo. You can't see the bracket in the pic. Yes, with a couple of wingnuts I can take the shuttle head out of it, but it's a bunch more screws to actually get the bracket off. I do understand your point, but to me it's a combo. One piece one handle 32 lb, 350 w of BOOM. I will still use one of the Avatar 112s as an extension speaker when needed.
