Luckily I don't have to go back until the end of August. Nonetheless, I have to do some course preparation this summer as well as research hopefully. All I want to do is play bass these days!

I totally feel what you're saying. Like, why can't they leave us be for the summer so we can just get our bass vibe on without having to deal with our "other"world? I'm heading to Ohio in less than a month to play an annual outdoor family day and service with my best friend, who's the pastor of a church in Columbus, and his worship band, and I'm in the process of getting ready the four 13-song sets. The last thing I feel like dealing with is fourth grade social studies, BUT that's what I'm doing tomorrow. Today? That's a different story! I hope everyone in the Combo Club finds some time to either get some playing in or at least spend a minute reflecting on the incredible fantastic music that's out there for us bassists to play for those who want to listen. We're all truly blessed.
Giffro, I remember the original version of this back in the late 60s, I believe. Wasn't it Dusty Springfield or Lulu who sang it? I know she was British. This though, is a very nice rendition from one of your own Aussie ladies, I see. Excellent!
Back in the '60's, my group played an instrumental version (a la Booker T.). It was a very popular "slow dance".
Spot on..good memory there iagtrplyr..LULU it was. Yep SR it was a popular instrumental as I did a version of it all through the 70's too. Great ol song. I even went with my entire school class on the movie's release to see it at the picture theatre, of course accompanied by the music teacher and during school hours. It was a great trip out and not a bad old movie too. She still looks good and 70 in Nov this year.
Just got off you tube with Lulu's original, slower, stronger bass line...brought back great memories.

I didn't see a bass player in the pit and I wasn't watching the keyboard player. The bass just sounded "off" to me...guess it was

Yeah that live version is a bit dodgy I reckon (good Aussie lingo)...I prefer the stronger bass line of the recorded studio Tina Arena version although you still cant beat the original Lulu version.
Tina Arena's voice is great...I will look up the studio version.
SR I did a version of the bass line that I sent to my fiance (at the time) in the Uk when we were apart for 2 years. In that time I did 800 songs recorded direct into the computer accompanying the mp3's..She is now my wife but still has been classified as deaf, (she wears 2 hearing aids but still struggles) so forgive the volume of the bass as it is a bit louder than necessary for her to hear..it was her request that I did all my recordings on bass louder for her so she could hear it. Anyway this is basically how the Tina Arena studio version went albeit with my own flavour added. Forgive the few errors as well as I didnt bother doing a take 2 for this one back in 2009 when I was a young lad of 58 loll..it wasnt one of my favourites..lol

Nicely done. What effect(s) were you using? It's very clear and definitely not the droning quality I hear on a lot of current songs.
Hey GP. When I recorded those 800 songs about 2006-2010 I had an old Pentium XP computer and all I did was plug the bass directly into the mic socket on back of the computer's audio card which was equipped with a Creative SoundBlaster "SB Live" audio card, then I used the Soundblaster mixer software to record the bass while carefully balancing the bass level with the mp3's song level that was playing at the same time (using the SB MP3 player) whilst recording using the Soundblaster recording software at the same time...quite a juggling effort compared to todays methods using modern interfaces. Press record on the SB mixer..Press play on the SB MP3 player..Play along and dont make a boo-boo..unless you want to restart all over again..lolll
I always used my active Peavey 5 string Dyna Bass though a simple Boss Flanger BF-2B for the "swirling type" effect. I set the flanger controls depth and rate quite low so as to JUST add the effect without being too overwhelming. After all these years it's still the only pedal I use mostly, although I do have a Boss Touch Wah TW-1 that I use onstage as well sometimes in certain select songs.
It certainly added a passable nice type of effect to some of those 800 songs. I was quite happy with the results as I'm not the most technical bassist around and am more of a "copy exactly what I hear" fashion player, then once learnt I throw in my own style and flavour to complete the songs. I guess thats why I always learnt my bass parts very quickly in bands compared to guitarists and singers who had to read charts etc when I played by ear and find it very easy. I can play pretty well anything that I hear fairly quickly so if the band set 6 songs to learn I would have them all completed easily within a few hours at home and ready to play them at practise that night whether the rest of the guys were ready or not loll Lucky some may say but has its drawbacks if backing an unknown artist on the night without benefit of already knowing the song. Luckily in 50 years that only happened once and I still got through with minimum problems.
Anyway thats how I recorded the bass mixed onto the MP3's..through the sound card while playing the mp3 on player software. Very unforgiving if I made an error. I would have to restart right from GO. Imagine using that techinque making it all the way through a 6-8 minute song just to fluff it up 60 seconds from the songs end. Pretty well un-editable so I would have to restart and try again. Luckily it didnt happen too many times.
I'll have to put some recordings on the "TB Recordings" section because my wife's relatives in the UK wish to hear some of my stuff that I did for her loll It would certainly be a simple way of getting the music to them. I apologise in advance for the louder bass volume of my playing because of my wifes hearing issues but it was at her request. Hope that explains things a bit GP and fellow musicians.
The old style of recording things using a computer with what was at hand 10 or more years ago.

That was great @Giffro! And I did enjoy the explanation of your recording technique given to GP.
A lot of stuff in the 60s had the bass pretty strong so it could be heard(?)in the transistor radios of the time. If one was listening on a hi-fi rig the bass could be turned down but on a little 3"speaker there wasn't much bottom. I started playing bass in the late 60s and I've always preferred strong bottom end. Except for hip-hop, which I don't listen to,most current recordings I hear don't have enough bass
