An update to this post that I responded earlier to: I spent a fun afternoon playing my Jazz through my Ampeg combo with a kick; my TC Electronics MoJoMojo overdrive. Ooh, that was nifty. Mostly rock music today with a couple of ballads tossed in for giggles, but the additional gain pushed the little 'Peg in a good way. The Jazzer, with the OD knob twirled, gave a delicious burble that sounded good no matter what the song was, especially with the bridge pickup being assailed. M, I'm sure you've sent scouts into that territory with your pedal, did you like what you heard?
So now onto the Vox combo with the same overdrive ready to be added upon desire. I was thinking with the NuTube it might be an interesting combination. The Vox's OD is okay, but I've got a little more control using the MojoMojo's gain and separate bass and treble when I need it. I'll try it with the hollow-bodied bass too and see if I can conjure up a unique sound or two from it.
If I sound unusually giddy (don't worry, January will crush that) it's because I'm not typically a gainy sort of guy, preferring to use the amp's controls exclusively, though I will crank the pre-volume if need be. But you have to have a little extra hair in your tone when jamming to Heart's Barracuda, right?
Doc, find a little free time and mess around with your VOX and we'll compare notes. 'Doggie, feel free to join us if the mood strikes ya.

The OD sound I have in mind sounds like

The descriptive way you go about your paragraphs of adjectives and nouns like "burble" could gain you an honorary Aussie badge loll..although on the other hand I don't ever remember any Aussie I know of using the word "assailed" before when referring to the output of a bridge pickup, not to mention twirling his OD knob loll
Isn't it great Combo members of having a real character, namely, iagtrplyr our Fearless Leader at the helm, to put smiles on our dials with his wonderful descriptive postings.

No, your kind words are sincerely appreciated. I look at it like I can describe something in a simple manner or take you on a journey to the center of your mind. (Quick, what group recorded it?). My other reason is I have to continue rolling out my A game in order to maintain pace with our club’s master scribe, Morrighan.

And here's another very fervent vote for it as a quite capable 50 watt bass amp, belying it's ultralight 9.9 lb. heft and plastic case. I've used it to carry a medium sized church sanctuary playing contemporary (read rock-like) music. And it held it's own quite respectably with 20+ acoustic instruments in a few Bluegrass jams.
I have been most pleasantly surprised with it, after a fair time breaking in the speaker. My punk bassist son really loved the built-in distortion one visiting afternoon! It does sound quite tubey!! I've been most pleased with the volume of smooth, clean, full bass tone and, of course, the extremely easy carry in & out.

Since I am more humanities than science I'll call it the study rather than the lab. My Peavey Max 115 was converted into a cab since it was beyond repair. In fact, the tech claimed it almost electrocuted me and I got lucky. So I want to get it involved so I can run three amps and and five drivers all at once! Ha ha ha ha madness!

Thanks for the feedback all, and for the thread link. I went over and read it, and the amp sounds pretty impressive. What I'm looking for sound-wise is an amp that lets each bass sound like itself. My combo is an GK MB-112, which weighs 23 pounds. I'm considering the VX50BA, the Phil Jones Micro 7, and Double 4. I will of course need to get a chance to give each a listen. Trying to set that up for the new year.

In the 80s I would have [briefly considered an evil deed] for a 23 pound amp like the GK. I mean, really, what we carried around.
Over at the Phil Jones Bass Owners' Club I recall the consensus is for the Micro 7 as the sweetest sounding (compared to the Session 77, Double Four and BG-100).
