Thanks for posting a great video demo. I think it's going to be a reference for many guys going forwards. Some basses lean to certain styles and strings. Old P basses take flats like no other.
To my ears the P bass sounded so nice finger style and easily the goto vanilla sound on bass. The MM was a close 2nd for me. However...slap and the MM rocked. I thought the Riccy had the early model bass cut circuit engaged which is why it sounded so thin. So that would need some re-soldering or some heavy post EQ to bring that bass alive in the mix. The tones are there but need coaxing in the mix.

Finger style wise...apart from the fret clank / bark which is unique to each bass style...the basic tones for each bass can easily be EQ'd or mixed to sound the same or copy each other.

Ah, nothing ventured nothing gained. It’s still a nice piece of kit and may serve a purpose at some point. Not my first overzealous adventure; probably not my last.

Is it just me, or is the first Ric with a pick demo, starting at 3:53 in the video, THE bass sound of "Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey"?

I could agree with that song idea. I came away with thinking the Ric sounded the weakest of all the basses. I know it’s a mid-heavy bass, but how about a little bottom, please? Still a very cool bass the Geddy Lee perfected.

Note: admittedly, I was listening to the video on my Altec computer speakers. Nice, but far from hi-fi.

I refuse to watch any video like this that does not include the Hofner 500/1. Besides the Fender Precision, the Hofner 500/1 is the only bass in constant production since the 50s (if we count the Rickenbacker 4000 as distinct from the 4001 and 4003). It was also the first electric bass to use two pickups. So it's absence is notable in my eyes.

Well-defended, Doc. I’d normally agree that a Hofner should always be considered in any comparison, but I’m wondering if the guy wanted full scale, solid body basses. Maybe he’ll do a short scale, hollow-bodied collection at a later date. That P sounded so good to my ears though...

Just to qualify, it's a full range 100w combo with a 2 channel preamp (very rare on bass) plus a line in and headphones out, plus the usual 3 pin DI out. It's super small and light and makes a great practice amp, although it's very pokey and loud. Capable of smaller coffee house gigs no probs and it can DI out to a FOH if needed. Robustly built and very nice to use. While it's not going to be the last amp I buy...it's fulfilling 95% of my current bass needs...oh and yes it does a low B through those tiny 5" drivers...crazy I know. I'm a six string user and I can make the sound of thunder though this little thing. I might get a PJB PB300 unit at some point which is an active 300w unit that works with this amp...and that might be me done amp wise. With 400w on tap and enough SPL to tame any drummer or guitarist all day long.
