The Combo Club

I’d be a lot more interested in the G&L Fallout if the colors were more appealing. When I wind up moving to a short scale bass I’ll try the G&L Fallout and if I like it I may dismantle it and spring for a paint job. I’m certainly settled WRT my combo amps so now I’ll let the arthritis tell me when to switch bass scales.

...I’ll let the arthritis tell me when to switch bass scales...

Best line of the day, ‘Rambler. I’ve worried my compadres here gave thought that I’d a severe case of the wimpys, but when you spend much of the waking day stretching, massaging, and cussing at your plucking hand because it hurts and there’s less strength in it, your comment reassures be I’m not the only one.

As much as I’d love to add a P-bass to the stable, I just worry it won’t get used like I’d want to use it. On the other side of the fence, the short scale bass does. Ale it easier for me to pluck across the neck PU because it’s width is much smaller. Yeah, the strings are closer together so being nimble is an advantage, but I’ll do anything to be able to play longer.

That being said, I still like the way my Jazz feels.

Arthur Itis moved in here and came to stay, so what say ye, time for an eviction notice? My Chowny CHB-1 is either long short scale, or short medium scale at 31 inches. And in truth I hardly pick up My Stingray any more at all. Doing technical exercises on one scale length is enough. I find the "new" bass - now going on 2 years as My Stingray celebrates 41 years right about now. It was made in spring of 79, that's the best anyone knows. Apparently some Stingrays of very close serial numbers have seen action with world class names. EBMM has no records that predate EB. The early basses are tracked by enthusiasts.

In any event, My Stringray is effectively retired. What I find is I shift from the two scales without a great deal of effort. Probably in great part is because 34 inch is all I've ever known until now. I just prefer the shorter scale. I find the neck on the Chowny is very easy to for me to play. Holding a big semi-hollowbody is something else again, feels comfortable now.

Plunk your magic twanger, Froggy!

Similarly, I have no trouble with the scale going from the 34 1/2" of the THUNDERBIRD to the Ibby or the VM Jag SS. However I do have discomfort with the difference in neck profile.

I've discovered that the best way for me to "practice" is to play along with old tapes/cd's of bands I was/am in. Whole bunches less boring. But, have also discovered that they're not playing back @ A440. Off by something like 1/7th of a tone(+/-). Also that I can't keep up with "Johnny B. Goode" at the tempo we used to play it.

 Gots to be a GOF to recognize your last statement there.

As promised, here's a couple of pics of my combos, a Rumble 100 v3 and a Rumble 200 v3. The 200 normally stays in our rehearsal space, but now due to lack of rehearsals, I took it home. The 100 is my "carry with me to various jams, rehearsals, get togethers and so on" - amp. I now had a chanse to link them together and wow, so now I'm thinking of letting that big gig-rig Rumble 500h + 2*115 go and maybe get one more 200 combo, or maybe even a Rumble 500c, and daisy chain them for the big gigs.
But, probably the 100 into the 200 would be enough for most of my gigs, the big-rig has been totally overkill , but it looks cool..

From now on when someone asks about bass A vs. bass B I’m going to point him here!

Wow, Mvf, where have you been in our club’s life? Not only are you getting a number (which I’ll get ya as soon as my virtual school day is done), but offering you a big sa—-lute right now for an impressive family, indeed!

Trump money rolled in thus AM. #2, after socking some into the retirement fund and helping a couple of peeps close to us, set off on the Good Ship Apple for a new watch. Meh.

Now it’s Papa Bear’s turn after a long day in a virtual world and my head hurts. Actually, I’m still looking for the biggest bang I can get. On the short list: Ampeg PF20T, a 15” combo of some sort, carrots. I think I need to add to the list.

Also kicking around the idea of waiting for anything new to cone our over summer. I’ve just got a feeling Ampeg is going to announce a brand new combo line with less weight, more power, and an interesting feature set.

They showed new colors at Winter NAMM, but it looks like they are selling through their planned run of launch editions before bringing those out. There's a NAMM thread on the Guitars by Leo forum that has a few pics. I saw black, metalic orange, that one in the video I posted and sunburst.

Feeling=hope. Kinda like us TBird fans have been hoping for an Epiphone VP, RI, NR, TBII or IV* in a variety of finishes. We've been encouraging[also called "bugging"]Gibby/Epi to do this for a coupla years. We still have a 'feeling' they will. Maybe not in my lifetime, but some day.

* Vintage Pro, ReIssue, Non Reverse(body),ThunderBird II[1 pup]or IV[2 pup]in White, Burst, Cherry, Black, Pelham Blue, Inverness or Kerry Green, and Burgundy Mist Metallic. Or as many as they'll do.

Or a nice Epi lefty four-string, perhaps? Colors optional, but most likely a sunburst.
