The Combo Club

@frEQ I like what you said in your info Bio...you really do have a broad musical taste. I wish I was more flexible like you loll
Also Thanks for your best wishes too regarding my wife's accident. I noted you "liked" a lot of the other members posts. Thanks matie.

Hey, @Giffro . Thanks a lot. Yeah, my interests are kind of all over the place. I was brought in a musical family where people were into different genres, so I was exposed to a lot of variety pretty young. I do have to update my profile, though. My musical tastes are still the same, but I've acquired a few more basses since I wrote it -- TB seems to have that effect on people. I've mostly been lurking on the site since I joined -- I'd intended to be a more active participant, but it's been a rough two years with my family and friends with lots of surgeries, other health problems, and several pets dying, so I haven't had much mental bandwidth for online stuff. But I've been liking posts and taking part in some polls here and there. And I've been browsing TB almost daily and it's been a welcome respite on the rough days.

My sincere best wishes to your wife. Whether bruised or broken, injured ribs are bad business. It's rotten that it happened on her birthday, too. Here's hoping they're "just" bruised, which is still not fun, and that she recovers speedily and well.

When I get a spare minute, I'll take pictures of my combos and join your esteemed club. Neither of them are gig-worthy, though I'm not gigging these days anyway, so it's a moot point. A combo that can handle gigs is on my list, but not at the top of it. I've been looking at newer ones, but I miss my old Peaveys. I know the Peavey sound isn't for everyone, but those things were beasts and indestructible, too.

@GonePlaid I hear good things about your band from my mother. She and my step-father live in your area (Ft. Pierce) and make it a point to see you guys when they can.

A MESSAGE TO ALL COMBO CLUB MEMBERS FROM MY WIFE CHRISTINE AFTER READING THE LAST FEW PAGES...
Thank you for your well wishes, thoughts and prayers, it is most kind of you and very much appreciated. Giff has told me what a great bunch you all are and now i can see why. As you have already found, he is a bit of a joker and can talk the hind legs off a donkey, which isn't as bad as it sounds, being partially deaf and wearing 2 hearing aids i can just flick the off switch and peace reigns, don't tell Giff tho.
Mrs Giffro xx

It looks like there are two witty people living in the Giffro household. Touche', my lady!

Giffro, my 82-year old mother hasn't heard a thing I've played for the last ten years, or at least that's what she claims. After a concert band performance I'd ask her if she enjoyed the show and how did I sound? Yep, a kid still trying to get a warm fuzzy from his ma. Her response was, "Oh, the band sounded just fine, I enjoyed the concert very much, but I couldn't hear a darn note you played. That bass is too low for my ears." Yeah...

I’m in! Love my Rumble 150! I’m a combo guy all the way! View attachment 3092656

Me! Lol. If I need more juice I line out to the board!

You've already earned your wings. Nice call! With combo amps weighing barely more than an expensive watch, I hardly think adding a just-as-light ext. cab is going to cause panic and uprising in Tasmania. (sorry, another Giffro reference) Heck, I've owned basses that seemed heavier than my old Markbass 212 combo/cab rig.

Hey, @Giffro .

Pierce) and make it a point to see you guys when they can.

frEQ, whenever you find a spare minute, please do so The door is always open...unless Drs. Intrepid or Cheese are operating ona sick combo. Then we put a sign out front that says, "Scram!"

Club looks like it's on auto-pilot, time to jam before nighty-night. All this science curriculum writing during the day has forced me into playing at night. Picked up a new Zoom B1Xon pedal this week and it's a great partner with my computer. See ya tomorrow, ladies and gents.

PS: Devon, let us know what settings you found to satisfy your Mike Dirnt urge.

Well I took some advice from Linnin on the Rhmble Club and this is what I got. He suggested flat eq at 7 on a super Bassman and then just mess around with the gain:volume ratio. This is doing the trick as of right now. Sounds good playing weezer as well! Overall a good punk tone

We'd love to see your combos. I hope life is treating you better these days after the last few years you've had.

We just got back from the doc btw. It looks like the wife is going to be a tad uncomfortable for about 6 weeks.
Definately a broken rib and a twisted bruised ankle. They dont bind the ribs these days for fear of lung/chest infections when the ribs are inflexible. They prefer them to flex as they are designed to do so you just have to grin and bear the pain. The doc gave her some Panadeine Forte (paracetamol and codeine) anyway so that is a medium painkiller which should help...at least she wont be able to chase me for not doing the dishes loll

I adore my old Peavey rig too frEQ. I gigged it for 30 years or more and it never let me down and as you say indestructable. I dropped the 1820 cab down more stairs than I can remember loll...it slid all the way down to the bottom each time and never complained once. The MKIV head was an incredible workhorse amp that drove that 1820 cab hard too.

Hey, Giffro, hope your wife heals quickly. My advise to her would be to turn off her hearing aids. That way she won't hear your jokes! I understand laughing with a broken rib can be just as painful as...I was going to say your jokes, but I won't...:roflmao::roflmao::roflmao:

Now SR..that's most likely the best advice you've given me for months loll I certainly don't wanna be the cause of hurting her further, getting the blame and then when she's well, getting a good boot in the derriere..woo big words for a simple Aussie lol
Still..it takes 6 weeks to recover from cracked or broken ribs...i could get a pretty fair way away from her in that time..if needed.
Looks like she wont be practising her bass for a month or more...woohoo I get my combo rig back to myself for awhile lol
ps SR...shes got the TB Combo Club bookmarked on her laptop now and she can read every little comment we all make..could be partner we is all in the big s*** lolll cracked up now.

Hey, @Devon Bustard! That looks like something other Rumble Stage & Studio owners might like to see. How about sharing it to the Rumble Club, too?

I'd call that good news, Giffro, but then I don't have to breathe with a broken rib. Sheesh, she'll never let ya take her out for a birthday celebration ever again! Mrs. Giffro, try not chuckling when your husband tosses out one of his award-winning quips, that is, if you can. Otherwise, grin and bear it, and before you know it you'll be back playing bass again!

Hi Ho Mike..shes doing a lot of sleeping with her broken rib and black ankle and it's decidedly quiet in the house since her accident lol
Made her laugh a few times unfortunately.
Example: Wet weather here brings out whats known as the Portugese Millipedes..little long black millipedes that creep along your inside floors. I found a couple on the carpet just inches from my Fender Rumble rig so I sprayed them with a bug spray. It turns out on a closer inspection, with my specs on this time, they were 2 little bits of black plastic..she couldn't stop laughing and ouching for 5 minutes.

Wow, a little under two days without someone posting and we've been delagated to P.4. This is not acceptable, club members, so I'll rant for a moment to move us back up. Something very interesting happened to me today (cue the harp)...

I played the role of the dutiful hubby today, helping clean the house and do the wash so I could play bass without any guilt this afternoon. I decided to get out my Ampeg PF-800 head, replacing the Markbass in my avatar, to stretch its legs before packing for my Ohio trip next week. Up to this point I decided only to bring the 800, which will be mated to my buddy's PF-210HE next weekend. So I swapped out the gear and turned on the 'Peg to let it idle before I was ready to practice. I plugged in my trusty Jazz bass, brought up the gain and volume, and hit the open G as I do out of habit. Expecting a lovely extended ring, I heard a short note for less than a second and then silence. What was this, a childish prank being played on me?

Once again I hit a note and heard nothing. So I shut the amp off, turned her back on and the same thing met me again. Less than a second's worth of sound and then nothing...zip...nada. So for the next 90 minutes or so I swapped cables, opened up the amp looking for a burned spot on one of the boards, ane even replaced the head with my MicroMark 801 (though my son and I played through the system just a day before without one problem) just to see what the heck it could've been. My findings: couldn't find anything wrong.

I did hear the Markbass sound like garbage through the 115 cab upon initial tryout, but then after unplugging and then plugging it back again, things sounded just fine. In fact, I hooked up the Ampeg head and cab again and it played like there had never been a problem.

I tried it a little bit ago and everything was hunky-dory. Right now I'm more partial to the cab having something wrong with it because playing through the MB, it sounded like the speaker was blown until I tried it a second time. BUT, the fact the amp sounded like it was fading out upon my first note gives me a chill that it's in the power section. Ya know, I hate gremlins!

Now I haven't run through the PF-800 since May when I used it for our school's talent show, but I would hardly think that'd have anything to do with it. I got it used a couple of years ago and haven't had any trouble with it, except last Christmas when in Ohio, I had no sound for five minutes before everything was working again. My dilemma is unless it rains, our Family Fest show is outside in a pavilion with no PA help, so I need the power. For the chapel services I can go smaller, if needed. I've been selling off stuff the past year or so to tidy up the coral and currently have no backup amp head. So, my plan is to bring this guy with me as a spare...

Rumble 100 06.jpg

Yep, the Rumble 100 combo is going east next Wednesday for what I'm hoping is four smooth days of peace, love, and no mechanical failures! This one gets the chapel duty and possibly outside, running the DI to the bands new PA system. The challenge is there's only 12s for cabinets and no subs. It's an acoustic band and they travel light. I think, with a careful touch on the channel volume, we can make it work if the PF-800 takes a dump on me. Otherwise, I told the Mrs. it'll be a quick run to the Columbus Sam Ash for whatever's on the floor. Actually, I think the Rumble can pull it off; especially since there's chance of rain next Saturday and we might end up inside the church.

So why all the drama, you ask? 1) I hat stuff that doesn't work flawlessly. I'm OCD if you haven't figured it out by now. 2) I look forward to this mini-vacation with my best friend, who's pastor and band leader, that I don't want any hassles. 3) This is my final assault on summer. After I get back it's out to school to begin getting things ready. Sue me, I love a happy ending. Oh yeah, and 4) no one else has been writing in the club so I figured I'd make up for it.

If you've made it through to this point, thank you very much. I might've bailed myself, but you didn't. You're a true bass brotha or sista. PS: though it'll be without the same power and possibly punch, I'd really like to put the Rumble through its paces next week. See ya!

Giff, it does give me a warm feeling inside that your Rumble is safe from Portuguese Millipedes/little bits of black plastic. It is a shame though that you may have added a few more days of your wife's recuperation because of uncontrollable laughter! :roflmao:

Just got in from a gig playing my Epi Bird 5 string through my R200C. Gain @ 8 +/-, volume 12. Filled a pretty good size room, no sweat. Would've gotten the R100-tried both at GC, picked the 200 'cause it has extension speaker capability and I have since bought a 112-which I rarely use. Your 100 should do fine, esp. if you do run it into the PA. Good luck with all of it, hope the church scares the gremlin away.
