The Combo Club

Ok so if it’s news y’all want
Our son-n-law is retiring from the US Military next month after 25 years
The band I work with the other two guys have other projects and I am there on retainer bassplayer and have gigs upcoming with both of those bands
Gear wise I picked up two (2) Kustom kpc4p powered monitors from MF through Google express for $119.99 and used them last Tuesday and they worked great.
I also picked up a Chavet dmx Foot C2 controller for my LED light bars and it also works great
Today our sons and 5 of our grandkids are coming over to celebrate my birthday which was Tuesday
I am set to retire on April 30 2019 after 47 1/2 years with the same employer
Gear wise
I currently have
5 bass rigs
3 basses
A full 600 watt powered PA
16 channel Yamaha mixer
Lights
and enough cables pedals mics and stands to start a small sound company
All acquired over my 50+years of being a bassplayer
Have a great weekend and remember to always
ROCK ON!

Just got in from a gig playing my Epi Bird 5 string through my R200C. Gain @ 8 +/-, volume 12. Filled a pretty good size room, no sweat. Would've gotten the R100-tried both at GC, picked the 200 'cause it has extension speaker capability and I have since bought a 112-which I rarely use. Your 100 should do fine, esp. if you do run it into the PA. Good luck with all of it, hope the church scares the gremlin away.

Thanks for the well wishes, GP! your words as a sight for sore eyes. My first Rumble i auditioned was the 200c vs. a Peavey Max 115 II combo. It wasn't even a contest. The Rumble had so much more authority over those bass notes, and the Peavey really struggled with the dynamics. Because of that fateful day, I bought a 500 head and 115 cab, but honestly could never get past what I thought was a really boomy bottom end, no matter what I did to alter the tone. Coming off a really nice Markbass rig probably didn't help either. I was looking for old school, but I just couldn't tame the beast so I sold it.

I was nervous buying the 100c because of the previous experience, expecting the same thing, but when I auditioned it at our local GC I was stunned at how different the tone was than the 115. I mean, it's a Fender, there's no doubt about that, the lineage is baked in. But I feel the 12' speaker is much kinder to my ears than the larger speaker. No shame in owning it if ya do, and that's why amp shopping is such a subjective task. We can recommend all day long that Amp X is so much better than Amp Y, but it ultimately comes down to what the person who's going to play through it hears. This is why I don't see the point in pooping on someone's fave combo because, to them, it is what they hear in their head.

I'm about to replay yesterday. I've had the PF-800 idling for 45 minutes now and I'm gonna plug in and see what happens. I tried it late last night and it was perfect. Could sitting in it's case for two months cause it to misfire. I wouldn't think so, but then I never would've predicted Giffro would use bug spray on black plastic either!

I'm also seeing the possibility of wet weather in the forecast for the midsection of Ohio next week and if there's any possibility this event goes indoors I know I'll be fine. My buddy, the band leader, just bought the new PA system about six weeks ago, including a 16-channel PreSonus board and pair of Yamaha DXR12 active speakers. Those suckers are really nice, but he's bent on running vocals only through them, though I've said even my bass at a lower volume won't affect them. I voted for the 15s, but our friend at the local shop said the 12s are better for vocals and that's all my buddy needed to hear. I still would like to DI the amp through to balance out the sound. I'm gonna take your recommendation east with me, GP.

Anyone else have a thought on running bass through a pair of 12s without subs? I'm all ears.

Duke, you are THE MAN! Dang, just when I think I've got something interesting to share. Why aren't you my neighbor? I could use a spare speaker cable to bring on my trip. 47.5 years, my friend? A wholehearted congratulations to you on an achievement that seems to be rarer all the time. Your employer isn't going to know what to do without ya there. So what are you going to buy as a retirement gift? It's gotta be big. I've decided in four years I'm going to purchase my first American Jazz bass. I love my MIM like a child, but I want to put an exclamation on what I hope is a terrific final school year in 2022, and that sonic gray lefty is in my sights. It'll also take that long to save up for it too. Spill the beans, Duke, what's the guy who has everything gonna do? Finally, congrats to your son-in-law as well, and please tell him thank you for all those years of service to his country and countrymen.

Over in Rumble Club they show a method of connecting 2 R100Cs. 1 on each side of the stage would do nicely. Like Duke, I've accumulated a remarkable amount of stuff in 50 years of bass playing, most of which is HEAVY. I'm too old and tired to move heavy any more. Everything I have works but quite a few items never leave the house. I have the equivalent of 3 PA systems but for all but 1 of our regular venues, I use a JBL EON one and a 4 channel passive mixer(Behringer)w/ no FX since the EON has reverb. A couple of our rooms even that is overkill. For those gigs I use an R40. The amp collection(b4 the 112):Addendum:[the Kasino is my practice amp. This pic might be the last time I roll it out the door]

Just be aware, Plaid one, when going FXSend from master to FXReturn on the slave, the Master Volume on the slave has no effect. You control slave volume with the master volume and/or the bass.

This is unlike my slightly older Bassman combos where the slave's Master Volume does control it's volume. My previous keyboardist liked having their own adjustable bass monitor on the other side of the stage from me. And they responded with a very light left hand, if any.

:D

Sorry I have been a tad remiss about posting kids..this thing with the wife has me back to my bachelor days and having to do the dishes, laundry, shopping, cooking..and looking after the injured old cheese..I'm pooped lol
Mike best of luck with this upcoming gig..I feel the same as you when something doesnt work as it should..its all I can think about trying to find the fault and if not found..i cant get to sleep loll Im sure the little Rumble will do the job if all else fails (so to speak). Get your best friend the Pastor to bless your gear just to be on the safe side.
Btw Mike..they looked just like millipedes...well without my specs on..loll The bigger mystery is where those little bits of black plastic came from lol
wooo @theduke1 nearly 50 years with the same employer..congrats young fella. Also congrats on your son-in-law retiring from the Military..long time stretch for him as well after 25 years. Not only have you got a lot of nice gear but a nice large family too..Happy Birthday from last Tuesday. My gigging life has also been 50+ years...we ol blokes just keep gigging on lol
+1 +1 +1 thanks go to @TrevorG and @eric_B for their best wishes towards my injured wife's recovery. Thanks guys.
@GonePlaid that pic looks like you're about to have a garage sale loll It's a nice collection of gear you have there over the years of bass playing my young friend. I have loads of gear laying around inside my house. I would use the garage outside for gear storage, but it's full of mice and spiders and I dont like them or plastic portugese millipedes either.
I need to clear out one of my 2 junk rooms (originally my 2 sons bedrooms) so I can get the amp gear out of the hallway..its a darn maze trying to get to the bathroom at the other end of the house. I've got to navigate around the indoor wet weather clothes dryer loaded full, then bypass a couple of wall units I need to work on to shorten their legs (long story), squash past a Westinghouse upright freezer, stumble past the Peavey 1820 cab, straighten the large wall picture for the hundredth time and if I havent peed my pants by that time, turn the bathroom door knob and fall in to great relief...let me repeat..great relief.
Good info from @G-Dog on the Master/Slave method relating to the Rumbles as well.
I'll try to poke my head in every day lads and ladettes. I made a mistake a few days ago and gave my bedridden wife a little bell to ring is she needs anything...we all learn by our mistakes eventually..BIG BEN is contantly ringing lately..lolll
Doc appointment again this coming Wednesday for a checkup on her broken rib and ankle, but I fear I may be hearing bells for another month yet. I may just turn up the master volume on the Rumble 500 lol
Catch you guys and gals soon hopefully.
Giff

Man, wish I had a 5 string thunderbird! I Just picked up a Squier vintage modified Jaguar 5 string for cheap from GC used. I know you have the short scale Jaguar, can you coax some thunderbird tones out of it? My band has been urging me to get a five string but I’m not entirely set on letting the bird fall out of favor. I might have to be one of those guys who play two bases in one project. Anyway, I’m still familiarizing myself with the Jaguar fiver. I adjusted the neck and action today and it plays pretty good. They put fresh round wounds on it, so I’ll need to change those to flats or tapewounds. Gonna upgrade the bridge and tuners, so I’ll just wait to restring it when I’m ready to upgrade one of those things. For now, I’m spending time getting comfortable with my new axe. I’m digging it!!

Once you get used to playing that 5 MT..you won't look back. I adore my 2 fivers..my Peavey Dyna Bass 5 ive played since '91 and my 2017 EBMM Stingray 5..it won't take you long to break in to the 5...for me, because I had wanted one for many years, it was a natural progression from a 4 string without any hassle. Have fun with it.

I had wanted one from the time I found out they existed. I knew it was P/J, but I figured TBird, what the hey. I was initially disappointed in the sound and its weight but with the Cobalts I'm pretty happy. Because of what our repertoire is(60s/70s classic rock), I don't try for a TBird sound from the Jag. The Epi Bird is another NR like my 67-just my preference.

The strings are LaBella Black Nylon tape wound. I’ve been using them for about 5 years now. I used them back in the 60s but did not care for the quality.
I found the best price at

Thanks Duke..Ive never tried LaBellas..always been a Fender but mainly Rotosound man over the many years...they suited the sound of my Ric and Peavey basses nicely but I will try out some of those Black Nylons from LaB for the Stingray to see what they sound like...Jason does stock them at bso..thanks again.
