The Combo Club

Morrighan!!! G’Dog, get the Club Constitution out and see if a member is allowed to freely speak their mind, offer an opinion, and enjoy free speech. Get back to me on that. I just wanna make sure she doesn’t have to turn in her Ampeg BA-108v2 for a month...

ATTENTION: there were no disinfectants used to gain any sense of tubishness between 2000 and 2016. Thank you.

Am beink most humbly sorry, Fearless Leader, sir. Current Club Constitution lacks your usual restrictions on speakink. Apparently vas general euphoria of bloodless coup and your ascent to power clouded judgement at the time, and plans to seize further power have been neglected during your glorious benevolent reign, thus far. Seems ve are wictims of your own success, Your Excellency! Time to purge Politburo and rewrite Constitution, sir?

SR, I hope you’re not going anywhere too soon. We’ve got so much to do, you, me, and the rest of this mighty cast of characters we’ve gotten to know over the past months. You are exempt from having to twirl numerous knobs too!

Oh, I plan on terrorizing (see, can't help it) around here for quite some time. Now I have to sanitize my hands and keyboard!

I know I’ve been talking about downsizing. Head and 4x10 for the Ampeg ba210. My body tells me it’s a great idea. My mind tells me there’s no way I’m going to get that thunder my Ampeg 410 gives me and I’m not sure I can do it. Hahaha
How many here have just gone to a combo and were happy with it. Please help lol

You probably made the better choice, Sir Plaid. Okay, I know you’re ignoring me on The Hives, so here’s the song. I love it. Think late sixties to mid-seventies garage rock. Give it a listen!

Not ignoring, kinda wondering. I'm vaguely aware of them from Sirius/XM. Didn't know of the song at all.
On a more personal note/observation, I have no use for acts that destroy perfectly good instruments. Auction them for charity if ya want, but throwing a guitar across the stage is asinine, IMO. At the risk of having to duck(not Dunn)various projectiles, The Who destroying their instruments turned me off to them.

Because so many performers run everything through the PA these days, if you can get tone(s)you like from a smaller rig and get volume from the PA, do it. We never go through FOH/PA and my R200c by itself is plenty. If I add the R112 cab, it's overkill.
I had a blue line SVT/810 rig in the early 80's. Never again, even if I got a steady gig where I didn't hafta schlep that big@$$ SOB to/from the venue.

What about practicing with the band or if you didn’t have PA support for say a small/medium place?

I started with a 15" combo in the early '70s and came back to them in the 2000s, when they were still heavy. In 2014 I bought a Rumble 500 combo just to prove to myself that they couldn't really make such a lightweight and powerful and good sounding (and good looking) combo. But, I was wrong!!! They did! And I've loved it ever since. Best all 'round bass combo I've ever seen.

(and good looking) combo.

There was a brief and fleeting moment I considered a makeover for the stupidly heavy 1x15 cab of mine with 7ender(ish) grill cloth. Would have been sharp looking. But I still wouldn't have been able to lift it again.

No place around here has house PA(except for announcements like "Farquhar party of 4....."etc.). I bought guitar amp mics-I already had a bass amp mic-and the drummer had his own mics. We used them twice so that we could put ourselves through the POS house PA into the smoker's bar. After those 2 times, they decided to just use the C&W jukebox in there. So my investments sit in a duffel prolly never to be used again. When we practice, we use small 15-25W amps turned low and no mics. Ya don't hafta practice at performance levels.
ETA: We play mostly 'classic rock'(whatever that is exactly)and some standards as dinner music. Our target audience is 55+. They like that we don't play so loud that they can't talk to each other. So does management. Our 2 guitarists use 15W 7ender Blues Juniors, I use a Rumble 100-or 40 for the smaller gigs. Our drummer never plays too loud.
