M, I’ve been wanting to ask you for like hours now and I just remembered. Do you know what PJB owners tend to like better when setting gain structure; running the gain up and adjusting loudness with the volume control or perhaps the opposite?

I know these amps, particularly my Double Four, do not rely on an overdriven preamp tone, so would it be better to crank the master and let the gain set overall volume? Or maybe it doesn’t matter. Just wanted your thought so I don’t have to wade through the Phil Jones thread. Thank you!

I like them. Sounds like some sort of modern take on proto-punk stuff. I will need to listen when I'm in a mood to jam out.

I do too when I’m in a rowdy mood. Thr bass lines are simple but driving.there are several really good songs you can jam with so don’t forget ‘em.

I have a pedal board for fun, but I don't use too much of it. My compressor is always on and I also have a boost pedal since my amp is only 50 watts. It get the house shaking for sure. I do have a cool Hofner fuzz pedal I use for Louie Louie and a synth pedal I use some back up for when we play With or With Out You. Since I bi-amp with the VX50BA in play, I can turn the gain and volume up and flip the drive on if I want some dirt in my signal.

As for EQ I used to run my Peavey scooped, but now things are different with the 3 Vox amp contraption. I have two EQs for the main rig and for both the EQ is the same: B 1 and T at 5. Seems to work for me. I love my tone!

There's a video on Youtube where Phil Jones suggests, with master off, turning gain up until the clipping light starts to light up when playing , roll it off, and adjust volume with the master.

Thanks, M. Can ya tell that I'm getting the PBJ itch? I think I'll spend a little time with each option, but I'm thinking along the same line as you. I remember that working best with my Ampeg Micro-rig. Run volume to 3:00 and set the gain to the family-annoyance level. Done!

And isn't loving your tone what it's all about? My question is if you are currently or will be hunting for the Peavey replacement, or are you content with the cards you hold?

No I'm good actually. If anything I may buy another Pathfinder. I have an extra cabinet from the Peavey Combo, and my current Pathfinder, which is acting as a preamp and signal boost, was modified with a speaker out. If I bought another Pathfinder I could run a massive rig with two 15s two 10s and one 8. Huge! It would look similar to this:

I read somewhere in TB last week that for us newbies, we should run B=9:00, M=3:00, and T=9:00. He said that was more or less flat. Right now I’m running B and T around 10:30 (or maybe 10:31) and mids at noon or a fair above. Plenty of bottom end and still punchy.

Much the same as I’ve written about the Stage 800, to get the best out of your amp you have to take the time and experiment. Then after that, take it to a gig and complain how much better it sounded at home!

The Rumble Club Wiki has a whole bunch of settings for different tones-with a Rumble. Using other amps, ya gots to guess. Or visit their clubs(if they have any).

Agree with you, RR. An occasional effect to enhance a portion of a song is fine with me, even applauded. But overuse is like too many toppings (12 or more) on a pizza. Ya forget what the original flava was!

Yeah, but if 3 are xtra cheese, 3 are xtra sausage, 3 are xtra bacon, and 3 are xtra spinach(for veggies)..........

Thanks for the reminder on Louie Louie. That fuzz pedal may have some use. Likelihood is it gets pulled and replaced with a pedal tuner. Figure keep the Vintage Bass Octave for the inevitable call to play in the key of E flat. Also use mine for a 1 db 400 hz bump.

When the gain is dimed on the Elf, it goes fuzz by design. A little master, whole lotta fuzz.

Thanks G! Nice to know that my Comm is fully functional! I sometimes get Russian military broadcasts, but the communicator tends to translate them as reality TV programs with crazy people owning tigers. The grafts are working well, and I'm very impressed by the level of sophistication. I still can't taste out of my left ear, but I'm sure that will improve.

Yes, I've been getting the magazine. I didn't know there were so many members of this group. I have been a fan of Orson "Scabby" Durant for years, and since he's never been photographed, I didn't know how he got that nickname until reading the interview with him.

Um, ... well, uh, ... yes. Comrade Durant was first recipient of Most High Medal of Bravery for makink several valuable contributions to bass-osity. But, regrettably, his mental functions are beink slippink in recent years, such that not all details of his recollections should be believed. Hahaha! He tells wild and colorful stories. Hahaha! Fearless Leader would never do such antics as "Scab...", uh, Mr. Durant tells! Never, I say! Ha, ha . . . . Actually, is sad to see such decline.

But, no worries, Rodski! You wil be fine. In time, yes, you will be fine, I'm sure. Just remember to keepink play bass combo in vicinity of new, improved Comm Badge. That's it.
