And in trying this myself, only able to engage the clipping light (around 2:00) when I slap. And very much being a fingerstyle player, expect I could leave the gain around 2:00 - 3:00 all night long without ever touching the clipping limit. It take very little on the master with the gain that high to get a whole lot of four sting bassity noise. Turning up with the C4 rattles things off other things.
I posted that from memory. Almost sure it was for the wee-baby double four, but might have been for the Cub. In high gain I can clip with most of my basses. In low only my Kiloton and my new shorty Sterling Stingray easily clip. The C4 must be a beast in comparison. I didn't test this much on my new to me BG-100 just on the D4.
Its been a bit, but I remember after first getting the Double Four, I tried some different settings and found the same as you, M. I could yank those strings for an eternity and never clip it. Of course, I’m finger-style only and with passive PUPs.
I made a thread earlier with this in it and it didn't get much notice. I thoughts folks here might find it interesting.
Fine playing and interesting comparison...not to mention a very cool bass line.

Great playing and sound. A hint of of chorus, perhaps? I never noticed the bass line before. What I notice was how pencil-thin that ‘Ray neck is. Looks like a pretty-cooked spaghetti noodle. It sounded great though, as did the Hof. Nice, fluid play with both

The easy thing would have been a tuner pedal. Yank the distortion pedal — it's got a place, but that place hasn't shown itself to me yet. And at this moment it's the [new] Vox tuner pedal whut has my attention. Monday sees the arrival of a new speaker cable and Cab 27 to complete the Elf rig. The BA108v2 Plus will be on top of the cabs, and the Elf on top of that — and all handy at my left elbow.
Preparing for live music, right? If the arrow's going to hit the target you have to point it in the right direction first.
Nice purchase, Morrighan! That should complete your multiple-optioned rig. At some point I want you and Doc Intrepid doing side-by-side photos of your rigs. I think there may be a slight resemblance!
And not to steal thunder, but I too (I know, really?) have something coming through the US Postal Service next week. It’s small and was purchased from one of our newest members. First time I’ve done that. PayPal is my friend.

Truly the PJB BG-400 and C4 rig fills every probable live need for me now. The Elf materialized to power the C4 while the Suitcase Compact and I were in two different places. So yay we're all in one place, and you know, it just felt logical to pair the Elf with its own cab. And dang if it didn't turn out the Elf has a few tricks of its own. With a speaker unplugged, it is its own post-EQ DI. I mean, how cool is that? But I have a DI on my pedalboard in the VT Bass Deluxe. If ampless, well ... the pedalboard wins because it's battery powered. Unless I want the Trace Elliot baked-in tone, and, well .... Lot of potential for both rigs ... 
Nice to hear that the Elf and the C4 play well together. I have an Elf and I’m exploring options now that I’ve been moving out some of my unused and redundant gear. I play quite a range of music and I wonder if you think the C4 might be too crisp-sounding for the Motown and jazz standards nights?
Blackstar u250 + 250w aec update. Had the chance to play with the band a couple of times since I got my combo rig. This thing rocks. I think it’s probably having the 15s stacked and one being higher up but running the volume at only 10 o’clock ish I can hear myself so much better. For context I was using a hartke 1000w head and 4x10 cab. I never cared for the aluminum cones in the 410.
I owned a fender rumble 200 previously and I can honestly say the fender is probably a “better” combo. Yes the blackstar has a few more bells and whistles but for a traditional sound the fender has it. For me ... I do lots of tone shaping using pedals, so I enjoy the blackstar It’s all the amp I’ll need for a while.

I had one of those when it rains it pours moments I bought a Mesa/Boogie Walkabout Scout 15”. Then I happened across a 12” version on GC’s used category that had been posted the day before. It was so cheap, I couldn’t resist.
While we’re waiting for Morrighan to lay here two pennies down, I would say it’ll work, but for that Motowny sound, maybe add a pedal to the rig line a Tech 21 VT. That, I would think, would definitely get you there quicker than anything else. Again, M has such toys and might be able to shed some light.
