The Combo Club

Strangely enough, at age 73,I have(or had)all the bass gear I've wanted. I would kinda like to get a Williams Legato electric keyboard, but it's low priority. What I'd really like is for our group to have more-and better paying-gigs(this is the off-season in FL). While I also would love to see peace, love and understanding, right now I'd settle for a lotta rain where the fires are. Those folks are having a rough go.

Amen, GP. Maybe we could borrow some of the H2O in the Northeast and pipe it westward. We'll fix a whole bunch of things that way. Good luck with better gigs and a keyboard!

I've been obsessing over putting more Vox into my signal chain ever since adding the 10 Vox combo really improved my overall tone. Jammed today and it still sounds great. Unfortunately I have no money for such things right now, so I'm glad that a bid I made for an old Vox combo last week on Ebay was rejected. One shouldn't drink and Ebay!

Anyway, since my current amp set up sounds great I'm going to try and stop myself from looking at amps and focus on some pedals. Hofner has some high end German made pedals, so my next indulgence will likely be one of those.

Thanks for checking in, Doc. I think Vox amps are very cool and wish they'd get serious about making something new that would be giggable. Even a re-issue of their old stuff might be interesting. Has anyone heard the new 50-watter with the NuTube in it? I'm still wondering what that sounds like live as opposed to the YouTube vids. My ears hear an SVT-type tone, but I'd like to hear more of a B-15. Great advice, Doc Intrepid, don't hoist a glass while tapping on the computer keys. You might just find a few days later a two-headed floor mop at your door!

To be specific, my 5 string TBird is/was the last bass I really wanted. I've had a couple of EB3's and I liked them but I'm kinda sold on my 2 TBirds. I also had an SVT w/810 bottom. Lotta fun as long as I didn't hafta move it. So between my 4 combo amps-and 1 extension cab-and 5 basses, I'm good. Oh, yeah, I forgot to include my 4 saxes,2 flutes, 2 clarinets and 1 bass clarinet. 0623181111-00.jpg 0608181235-00.jpg 0813181427-00.jpg 0327181131-00.jpg 0604180849-00.jpg 0607181547-00.jpg

The 2 headed mop thing sounds like the voice of experience:laugh:

To chime in on the bass gear I want, it’s looking like this as of right now:

1. Fender 60’s Jazz in Olympic White
After watching some Joe Dart clips i know I need it in white.

2. Gibson Thunderbird or a 70’s Ripper if one is listed for a good price and in good shape.
I am a huge fan of Rick Danko and The Band so I’d love to have a ripper, but a Thunderbird to me is the ideal rock bass anyways and I would get a lot of use out of it.
3. Another 58’ style P Bass for Flats!
it’s needed for a lot of early music
4. A Fretless. I would like one of those old Ampeg Fretless’s (Eastman makes this style now) but I also am looking at Godin as they are made in Canada.

Now that’s it for basses but if I did somehow strike it rich and was able to afford all of these when I’m still able to lug heavy gear around, I’d like a nice Ampeg SVT and 8x10 just because of how awesome they sound.

This is my dream bass gear list which changes all the time when I see new models, but this is pretty much the order these will be purchased.

Maybe it's a new instrument or select piece of equipment, but I feel better knowing there's something interesting on the horizon, especially at this time of the year when before you know it I'll be knee-deep in fourth and fifth graders.

For me a couple of things but don't know if either will happen this year. Thing 1 is a G&L L-2000. Thing 2 is another Subway cab, either another 115 or a 210 to add to the 115 I already have. My daughter's senior year in HS is rapidly approaching and the thought of college tuition is giving me the heebie-jeebies. o_O

On the "knee-deep in fourth and fifth graders" you have my sincerest admiration. I don't know that I could handle that, but I'm certainly happy to know that there are patient individuals out there who can. A tip of the hat to you!

Good evening Combo Club! No one has been on since GP's posting last Thursday? Let's see if we can entice some of you to chime in with a thought or two in what I call, "What do I spend my hard-earned money on next?" I like to have project ideas in my head even if there's nothing going on at the minute. Maybe it's a new instrument or select piece of equipment, but I feel better knowing there's something interesting on the horizon, especially at this time of the year when before you know it I'll be knee-deep in fourth and fifth graders. It keeps me sane and gives my wife thoughts for the holidays. So how about you? Anything you're hankering for in the musical world besides Oasis getting back together for an O2 concert? Here's mine:

1) tube bass amp (thinking Ampeg PF-20T for the boudoir); 2) Fender Jazz American Pro (the retirement bass, but can I actually wait another four years? Doubtful), and 3) basic but decent-quality computer recording gear (so I can finally hear myself after, not just during the song). That's it. Oh yeah, peace, love, and understanding for the entire world.

Okay, CC members, who's up next? Extra points if you explain why you want it as well. Let's light up the board!
I find that I have the bass gear I need (for now, that is), but want - now that’s another matter entirely. I’m currently GAS’ing for a Fender Aerodyne Jazz that’s popped up in my local want ads. Why? Just because, that’s why! :)

Alright, here's my combo. Rumble 200:
IMG_20180804_154130.jpg

Tweeter? Occasionally while using flatwound strings. I don't need one, but I suppose I flip the switch on every now and then.

Sacrifice tone for weight? Hellz yes! Within reason that is, but I definitely would sacrifice a bit of tone for a lot of weight.

Bang 4 buck? I wouldn't know, but the Rumble 200 I just got on discount seems competitive for its price and rated wattage.

Yes, playing my bass through my Ampeg BA108v2 through a VT Bass Deluxe is enough practice volume to wake the house. That 20 something year old just in awe over her new bass is now a <ahem> 62 year old who is just in awe over her new bass and why am I here telling you this instead of playing

because it's the combo club

Gig report here. I used my mighty Rumble 60 Friday night for an outing with the retro act The Rockits.
I started with the the Rockits about 4 years ago using my usual modern gear I’d acquired in recent years. Class D and neo stuff.

Slowly I migrated to analog gear and began to find what I’d been searching for (and forgotten about) in recent years.

Initially I was concerned that the Rumble wouldn’t be loud enough, but that proved to be wrong and it did everything I needed from it in that setting quite nicely.

I seem to remember other Rumbles having a switch for the ‘red light’. Mine doesn’t offer a choice, so the dancers danced right thought the red reflection on the dance floor all night.

Always wondered who thought of that light.......and why.

Sadly, I can only think of one thing I want, and nothing that I need at this time. I want a new Fender Rumble Studio 40 bass modeling combo amp, with all the different sounds it can make and all the adjustments available to those sounds, and all the various connections available, many in stereo!
K48134000001000-00-500x500.jpg

And the extra points why I want it is that I've had such good service from my Fender B-DEC 30 bass modeling combo amp for so many years! But, surely, it will not last forever, and I gots to have my little grab-n-go amp! Plus, I can slave my Rumble 500 to it for loud gigs. Also, I can slave my Bassman 500 to it for stereo loud gigs.

So in other words, you're in pretty fine shape, instrument-wise. I love your semi-acoustic and, of course, the Les Paul-style bass. I always thought it'd be a nice guitar to own. BTW, I liked the flip-flops used as scale when comparing the Kustom amp!

mikeyjm2, on behalf of the many teachers across this great land, I thank you most sincerely. I base the patience you mentioned on the fact I know I have nine months to make some great learning happen and that keeps me motivated; I can play an influential role in these kids' lives; especially the ones who may not have a dad at home, and that my own retirement depends on how successful I am know since these peeps are gonna be donating to my social security each month! :smug:

I gotta admit Mr. Mags, the 200 does offer quite a lot, especially for its competitive price. I absolutely adore my 100c and it's bassy, punchy tone. You sound like a happy camper!

And that's a good enough reason for anyone!

Great journal entry, ghost. I believe that was first gen Rumbles, but I thought there was a switch to turn off hte disco lights. If you're really wanting to know, take a trip over to the Rumble Club. I know they've discussed it previously. Or just let the ladies dance the night away bathed in red!

I gotta agree with you 'Dog, the Studio 40 would be perfect for knocking around at home as well as using as an effects pedal through a larger amp. I can't find where it is, but one of the folks here (I think) displayed a Studio 40 sitting on top of a Rumble 40, using the two together at a live show. A perfect accessory to what you already have for amplification.

It's a running gag over on Thunderbird Club. I read somewhere that flip flops are the Southern "glass slipper". It certainly looks that way at WalMart. Of course you folks get snow which kinda shoots that down.

That was me. Can't overstate how much I love this setup
