The Combo Club

Ouch the foot Ouch
Ouch spelled backwards is
Hcuo and that's probably only pronounceable in that clicking language in The Gods Must Be Crazy
of course we could try Ouch inside out except this game gets boring fast. If you want to geek out on Words, fire up some competitive Boggle. Nothing like a sand timer and a bunch of scrambled letters to really make your night a special one ....

There is no gig report here, either because "the mind makes a promise the body can't fill". Over here [Carol Merrill shows the home audience what's in the box] we have a copy of Grateful Dead Guitar Anthology on order at the local brick and mortar.

Learned to read treble clef long before I learned to read bass clef, so the learning curve will be like a shelving EQ. What I have in mind goes back to one of my early mistakes here at TB, when the crowd said: Burn the witch. Well that wouldn't be the first time. Because, let us imagine there is a bass player out there whose initials would be IA if they were transposed one letter by the village idiot.

And further imagine your narrator, new to the board, says not only do I like the fellah, and he taut mei reel gud, and made the colossal mistake of mentioning he was a guest in my home so often I didn't even notice.

My welcome to TB was, well ....

But to the point what I have in mind is learning the melody, just like SumGai told me to do, and play the changes. What I have in mind is something like Igor's Chromatic Exercise from Standing in the Shadows of Motown over two octaves.

The other attention point has been around my shoulder, and working with the physical therapists to build my strength. The strap is a lodestone (sorry, couldn't resist, low hanging fruit) and

It's necessary for me to play a semi-hollowbody bass in a considerably lower position than I'm used to. It's a different beastie, and from what I find so far means a big, powerful combo rig like mine allows me to play with the lightest touch (something else connected to that IA guy.) That seems to be how to make the semi-hollowbody really sing.

In practical terms, I have only one strap that adjusts to the necessary length and I can assure you othere is more than one I know who has called me vertically challenged. Even so, my straps aren't long enough. What I learned as I decided to make all my straps functional with Solstice Eve is the correct phrase is strap extension. Searching on variations of "tailpiece" did not yield useful results.

All this apparently non-productive material comes from the fact I'd nothing else to think about as it's been more than a week of medical enquiries as to what, exactly, is gooched. Sent me to the hospital a week ago Saturday for lab work, and pulled me into the office today to see whut's whut. And the answer is Ri Runno.

The bonus round goes to me, because all this means the second scheduled colonoscopy that was to have taken place on September 11 is now moved to October.

Meanwhile I haz bass straps.

Whew! Now, Ms @Morrighan, it's obvious I ain't the most sophisticated guy in this neck o' the woods, which is on a whole 'nother continent on the other side of the world from you, but can I just say, on behalf of myself and prob'ly at least one or two other people around here, "How's that again?"

I mean, I could listen to what-I-perceive-to-be your voice in my head as I read your posts all day long, and I still couldn't explain to anybody more than one or two things I
think you said. It's, like, I read, and re-read, and read again, and, just when I think I'm beginning to get a feel for the imagery & rhythm & a reference or two, I think, "Naw! That's not it." and commence to reading it again. Girl, you are just one . . . . deep . . . . . dish! But, I'm real proud and happy you're here and sharing.

Do I gather correctly that your shoulder hurts and you're short, but you still need strap extensions? If so, well, I'm a bit tall (6'2") and had some nerve pain down my left (fretting) arm once and found this strap to help quite a lot.

Slinger Straps "Harness Strap" Ergonomic Guitar Strap

Hope this helps.

Gigging with a broken bone in my foot this weekend.
Took a dive in a parking lot last week. BL is having hip replacement surgery so I have to be there so we have a solid offering.
Was looking forward to using the ACC 126 in my avatar, but because of my injury I won’t be able to =(
It’ll be my high-tech rig because it’s already loaded in my suv.
As it is someone else will be moving my gear for me ‘cause I’m on crutches for a few weeks. I:bassist:I

For goodness sake, Ghost, take it easy and by all means let your peoples haul your stuff around for ya. What the heck did i tell you about stage diving on concrete??? That's like the third time in a month, you rebel! :bassist:

Roll call? Yes, please! With butter, if you don't mind.
Role call? Present, but no accounting . . ...

Sorry to hear it, ghosty. And I'm having "minor back surgery" next week. How's that for an oxymoron? Probably from lifting all those fridges and heavy combos all those years.

Hey, what is this? The GOFs?!?

I gotta go . . . ...

Good luck with the surgery, Doggie. Yeah, I could complain about my back, sore feet, and charlie horses in my calves from standing again all day, but then it would be the GOFs, and I'm only 29!

Wow, M, I have no idea where to begin with this manifesto other than to say, "nice plug for Let's Make a Deal!" Good luck to you, my lady, with your perilous journey into the nether regions, aka, the doctors. sheesh, this is soundling less like the Combo Club and more like the Octogenarian Club. No offense to anyone here who actually is an octogenarian. By the end of this school year I plan on skipping the 6th and 7th decades of my life and head right into the 80s. Why wait? Keep smiling, Morrighan!

Here...if you haven't already guessed by my past posts. GP, thank you for steering the ship with the roll call request. This is literally the first evening of the past few I've had to relax and get on to visit with my favorite people. And playing my bass, you ask? Here, let me blow the dust off first and see what the Jazz has to say about it. I'm a gonna try though this weekend before I forget what an E string sounds like.

For you folks who are currently enjoying retirement...HELP ME! :woot: Seriously, I congratulate you for making it to your goal and wish you many years of retired bliss. What it must be like to wake up, play bass, eat lunch, nap, play bass, eat dinner, and nap during TV. Sweet! Oh well, my time is coming. For the rest of you working slobs like me, your time will also finally come to you. Dreaming about the next combo amp and where the heck I'm gonna keep it in the house is what's keeping of me going.

So here's this weekend's question: what is it that keeps you going when life gets stressful? For me, it's my family, friends, and of course, music. Even when i don't get the time to play as much as I'd like to, it's a thrill to drift away from reality for a while into whatever I'm playing. My wife says when she walks by my room and sees me deep into it she knows I'm in a very happy place. I just tell her it's the early signs of dementia...

Okay, brothers and sisters...let's hear from ya. Feel free to update us on gear as well. I can't wait to see what Doc has up his surgical sleeve! ;)

About that long strap thing - the strap button is on the heel of the neck, so there's that length to be factored. A semi-hollowbody is a big bass. All the pix of Jack Casidy show him playing his nearly on his right hip. And I find this is the "comfortable" position for me. Searches of TB for playing positions for a semi-hollowbody haven't yielded useful results.

@G-Dog the slinger strap looks uncomfortable to me only in that the straps traverse my Thomas the Tank Engine territory pretty completely. Thomas the Tank Engine Territory = intended for the kids but it's Dad who finds it most fascinating ....

What I learned is the nature of the arthritis and tendonitis in my shoulder is not the product of a heavy bass. It's the motion of my arm that aggravates my shoulder. Took photos and a 14 second video of me playing to the physical therapists so they can see what's going on when I play. Physical therapists understand muscle groups and how they work together.

Strap observations: the most comfortable straps for me are the cloth straps like my Dog Days. The fabric is supple enough to cradle my shoulder bones. The fancy schmatzy padded leather strap really doesn't do the job, as the foam and leather on mine does not easily conform to my shoulder.

Now about them combo amps .....

Gotcha. ;) Sorry it didn't help. But, I didn't mean for you to dumb-it-down for me. That removes the magic. You be you, and I'll be me. "Don't go changin' . . . " :)

Playing my new GK MB112-ii as we speak....much better for home practice, rehearsals and small gigs. I had been lugging around its bigger brother, the MB212-ii or a Rumble 500/210, which are great amps, just waaay to much power for some gigs. Although they both can still work for smaller gigs and i can turn them down, they are high powered amps and IMO just dont sound as good turned down that low. Im digging the MB112-ii, it has a very crisp mid range and a full low end, is very small and super ridiculously light weight.

This isn't the new 'addition' to my rig I mentioned in a previous post, but it is something new I got this week. A Germanium fuzz pedal by Hofner! It sounds great with my fretless 500/1! I have had much chance to play it, but when I have had the oportunity it's been inspiring! Some cool vibes emerging from it for sure.

Yes, you do!

I sometimes forget that some things I take for granted are unknown to others. Couldn't quickly find a free audio of the original recording, with vocals, that may have been more recognizable.
I remember when that first came out, I tried to get that sound outta my bass-through a Mosrite(!)fuzz tone, but it always lost lows. I read an article awhile back-on Reverb-that Sir Paul usually recorded the bass line on guitar first then came back and did it on bass. Plus which, the fuzz units of the 60s were not geared for bass frequencies. I don't have any use for fuzz now but it would be interesting to hear demos of current bass/fuzz offerings.

I'm learning so much through our club! As a teacher I really like that. The Hofner pedal is really expensive, and likely overpriced, but I found a great deal, more than 50% off, on Ebay.

Anyway, here is a video as requested (not of me, of course):

Me, too, Goner. Talk about "blown away". Well, . . . I was. My band's lead guitarist (I was rhythm at the time) later got a Fuzz Face but, of course, that was for "Incense and Peppermint" and the like by then. We forgot to ever try it on bass! Our "bassist" simply owned a rig, we had to teach him the basics.

My link is to a modern musician covering "Think for Yourself" instrumentally. Sounds pretty 'true to the record' to me.
