The Combo Club

Hi kids and Mike loll..just a quick note as I'm using my brothers computer at his locale..I am undergoing an internet upgrade from what has been known for the past few years a a Govt. stuff-up..so to speak. I am getting a new connection in my area from the original copper underground network (including phones) to a Fibre network and am offline for awhile yet before cabling and NBN equipment is installed in the house and outside the house and is completed. This new connection is mandatory and supplied by the Govt. Australia wide..any Aussies in here besides me can tell you about it. I have been on a DSL Broadband connection for 15 years+ but this new NBN Broadband is replacing the underground copper network Australia wide with Fibre..and some lucky customers are getting Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) direct..i'm not quite as lucky as my area is getting FTTC (Fibre To The Curb) which is the next best thing to FTTP which consists of mainly Fibre with a short section from the kerb (curb) outside my home to the connection box on the outside of my house being copper..lol It is supposed to be superior and heaps quicker compared to my total copper DSL connection but a lot of people Australia wide dont seem to think its better at all...time will tell. Unlucky customers are getting FTTN (Fibre To The Node) which could be several km's away which also means Fibre run to a cabinet streets away and then copper cabling still connected to the home from that cabinet node.
Anyway to make a long story short loll..if thats possible for me..I should be back sometime later this or next week hopefully..i'm still waiting on my new modem to be delivered for starters.
Lots of info on the internet about this darn forced upgrade to Aussie homes through the govt. approved network construction company called NBN Co.
Info below if anyone is interested lol..its a royal pain in the butt..back when I'm able kids...its horrible to be cut off..I feel alone and cut off from the rest of the world and chopped off at the knees..lol See ya soon all.

Giff

Giff, you're back! Well, by the sound of it, sort of. Hey, part-time Giff is better than no Giff at all. I think that's actually a song title that Morrighan is playing in her duo. You Aussies are the most interesting people in the Eastern Hemisphere. When you foks do Internet updating, you really do it! Just pop on when you can and we'll enjoy the time spent reading and smiling. Have you had any time to strum the four-string? I have mine strapped around me right now for a little jam, but wanted to stop in and say hello to the membership.

Giff, did ya see Doc's Hofner? He messaged me offering to sell it for $25, but I told him I don't play a right-handed bass. Oh well, my loss I suppose. Glad to see ya back, Giffro!

Surprisingly it's been working for me so far. I'm not playing with highend players, nor very serious, so it's a relaxed environment and that helps.
B/c no 2 of my basses have the same exact spacing, I often look at the neck to make sure I'm in the right spot. Also, watching my fingers is often the most interesting thing going on in some of the places we play:smug:

I found that my 2nd serious attempt at fretless is somewhat fruitful, unlike the first. I think I was just more ready mentally the 2nd time.
I sold the first fretless after a few months. This time i’ve bought a few fretless basses used. The most comfy is the fretless P but I also feel good on 3 others.

Oh, I should add, I’ve played quite a few gigs all fretless, didn’t bring a fretted bass. Something I thought I’d never do.

That all sounds great! I think it's important to rely on a bass profile one is comfortable with. I like Hofners, and play them exclusively, so the muscle memory is good with that bass profile.

Playing gigs sounds very accomplished with the fretless. Hopefully I'll get there!

Unsure if it's a good thing or not that movie theater ushers and elevator operators exist within my living memory. Sadly, the band name The Dinosaurs is taken (they were great, saw them many times.) Even saw Peter Albin's bass up close and in person. That's the kind of music I'm good with playing ....

Ghost, nice seeing ya. It's been too long. I popped in the Acoustic Club yesterday and read some of your thoughts. I gotta admit, I'd love to find me a vintage Acoustic or Ampeg combo that still has a little life in it and would make for a fun project. Something for around the house, mind you. My owning a fridge-style cab has been vetoed by my creaky back. Being there seems to be a number of Acoustic combos out there, what's a model you'd recommend? Maybe 50-100 watts with a 12" or 15" speaker. Probably up to five bills. If anyone has a minute, drop off a few models that I could begin looking around for. I'm still hanging onto a tube head for Christmas, but might make an exception for a small slice of history that needs some TLC. Thanks!

Those guys were cool, one of my Seattle bands opened for them in a sold out 1000 seater back in the mid 80s.

'Wind, nice to meet you and thanks for responding on our club page. If you enjoy scintillating conversation and have access to a combo amp, please let us know and we'll add you to an already stellar cast of characters. If you happened to have a friend or two (or a hundred) who might fancy joining our little organization, pass the word on. If you're lucky, GonePlaid will send you a $500 bonus just for signing up. If you're like the rest of us, he won't.

Careful @iagtrplyr , my thoughts may be toxic...:roflmao:

It seems to me you might be happiest with one of the newer and maybe neo featured models, as all the vintage combos were heavy (>50lbs).
Having said that (& if you agree), I must admit I know little about the current GC inspired Acoustic gear.
Maybe someone else could field that.

Combo? I've been meaning to build one for a while. I'll get on it ASAP.
