The Combo Club

CC's been quiet today. Everybody out playing their combos?

and still practicing with my combo. It's a new amplitude of practice, as my concession to Black Friday is the purchase of Jeff Berlin's newly released course on walking bass.

Started in Friday evening. The material begins with four bars of a Maj7 walking bass line to be repeated 3x before moving on to the next key. It's plain old "sheet music" (.pdf) in bass clef with no tabs or suggested fingerings. Straight quarter notes all the way.

Here where the Thing That's Going Around is still going around, it feels to me a fair use of my time.

and yes to the Rumble :)

q: I can't hear any difference when the horn is on or off on this Combo 200... that means there's an issue, correct? It shouldn't be a subtle difference, I'm playing with higher frequencies, higher notes... *sigh* I think it's a pass then, right?

Some would say no, there is no issue. That is because most bass players don't use the horn anyway...but, if there is a problem, get it them to fix it or negotiate a better price.

The other option is to buy a new one but, don't forget to turn the horn off...

CC + @iagtrplyr .... local shop called me said they got a mint Rumble 200 in, $300 out the door. Is financially feasible (non-impactful for now), probably can give him an Ampeg practice amp (BA-108) I never use to knock off another $50. Yea or nay?
Do it!
...and then get another one...
(See where this is going?)

I would do it but would like a warranty of some kind. If it's 30 days, play the heck out of it during that time. If there is any problem it should show up within that time. Then, if needed, get a 15" Rumble Cab and enjoy 200 watts of Rumble Bliss ;)

I like the advice you’re getting. Personally, I could less about the tweeter though I do tend to leave it on the 115 cab.

For the money you’re spending, it would be nice to have everything working. Find out if it’s on the fritz and see you can get a few bucks off. That is, if you’re happy with the rest of it. Any surface damage, poor rotating knobs, or lack of volume, I’d pass. For $250 though, you’re getting a good combo for half price.

Good lord... I generally play my Marcus Miller markbass 310 combo with gain around 9 o'clock and volume a little more than that and it gets pretty loud. I got into the groove earlier and cranked this bad boy up to 11! It took it all, chewed it up, shook the foundations and asked for more! Sometimes I forget where all the money spent went but now I remember.

Excuse me while rehang some paintings and reset furniture around the house.

And isn’t it a great feeling when you crank up that groove and let it fly? Being most of us probably spend our musical time playing in a room by ourselves, Covid time excluded, it’s a joy to find that pocket and let the paintings hanging on the wall know you found it!

'Twas a pass. No horn = no dice. Methinks a Rumble 200 will come up on TB Classifieds/Reverb/CL in the next few months. There's no rush, current rig is pretty nasty.
Bad move! In the R200c "book of words", you'll see that the horn will add unwanted distortion if left on. The only time I use mine is if I'm running my CD player through it on breaks. It would make a difference with guitar(maybe-I don't play guitar), but it's otherwise unneeded for bass. If the deal is still available, you should buy it.

My thoughts exactly. Unless you really use those frequencies a lot. I am like GP, only turning the horn on when running other music or guitar with the POG for that 12 string jangle.

Spent the day putting up the tree with the kid. He is at him mom's tonight, so I played a bit and now I am watching a Roger Waters' concert.

Good morning, all!

Uh-oh, it looks like a Rumble is a-brewing (pun intended). I left last night feeling the brotherly love and now feel the need to keep the peace. Or not.

1uca5x, if you’re not ready to buy or your instincts are telling you to skip this combo, just do it. I agree, there’ll be another one along any minute. It’s a popular brand which means there’s a huge used market. You may not see that price though, so think it through.

With all that being said, I agree with GP and JPD. I find most tweeters in combo units tend to be of little influence to my playing. At best, it’s a minor addition to clarity and at worst it’s an annoying nuisance, right Markbass piezo?

Again, you decide for you, but I wouldn’t let the tweeter’s health be the deciding factor if the rest of the combo in excellent condition. Get a price reduction because of the tweeter and it’ll pay for itself.

Keep us posted on what you decide.

That’s sweet, Doc. ‘‘Tis the season for trees, presents, and holiday masks. In three weeks and two days we begin winter break. Hopefully, we’ll all be in school as our building heads back to the brick ‘n mortar tomorrow. Online learning was killing my back having to sit all day monitoring my computer screen.

Coincidentally, the Mrs. and I watched the making of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon last night. Wish You Were Here is up next.

Coincidence? I got my tree up too! And I'm knackered.

M, how the heck are we supposed to compete with you going all out like that? The nicest benefit is yours smells, for a while, like a freshly-cut tree.

In a side note, is there an Ampeg 810 cab in one of those wrapped gifts? I have a hunch...
