The Combo Club

Journey in the 70s was good old Arena Rock band (i.e., albums Infinity, Evolution, and Departure). Then Journey replaced Gregg Rollie, the keyboard player, with Jonathan Cain. From there Journey started producing 80s Pop music versus good 'ole R&R. That is when I quit listening to them. Just my opinion, of course. :)

PT, it could be that your a fellow lefty, but I could not have assessed my feelings on Journey and better than that. Jon Cain took them to the Promised Land of Pop, although many would argue Steve Perry did that with the Infinity album.

I agree with you that Gregg Rolie gave it a sound that rocked, plus his vocals were a nice alternative to Perry’s.

They’ll always hold a special place in my heart because their songs were some of the songs my first band played.

You’re the guy who mentioned eighties music today so I spent a bit reminiscing with Tears for Fears’ Everybody wants to Rule the World. It was fun and gave the old index finger a good workout.
Weird. I heard a story on NPR this morning about the movie Land, and how one scene has the characters singing Everybody Wants to Rule the World. Had not thought about that song in decades, now it shows up twice in one day.

Something in the snowy cold air, I guess.

Cabin fever has struck and to relieve it I have an interesting game for us to play today. It’s easy, but you have to follow thr simple rules in order to participate. Here we go!

1) search the world over for the best bass combo amp we could buy today for up to $500, tax and shipping not involved.

2) new or used, retail store or private purchase, it doesn’t matter.

3) we (whoever’s playing) must all agree on said combo in order to make the “purchase.” One dissenting vote and it’s out of the running. This is gonna be thr tough part.

4) you need to post a pic, give us a paragraph explaining why it’s the Best Buy, and lavish me with praise at how much fun this is. I’ll keep record of your submissions. Don’t forget to comment
( + or -) on the other member’s recommendations.

5) nominations end at 9:00 PM CST in the USA. I’ll then salute the winning combo and its sponsor before I hit the hay.

If you have any questions or comments let us know. BTW, you don’t even have to like the amp or want to but it. Let’s see how good you all are at playing pitchman.

Have fun, the contest has begun!

Time to get the bass out and pay homage, RR. It's a simple tune but fun to play along with.

I see, one of those who sits in the back staring out the window and then comes up five minutes after I've gone over the assignment to ask what we're doing. Two can play at your little game. Everyone, first on the list...Ashdown Tourbus 10 (the combo, not the actual bus). Can anyone possibly beat that? Maybe an 80s Crate combo with worn out 8" speaker?

Let the game continue...

And now this pops up? Anyone have experience with the BAM? I had a BG250 115 few years back and I enjoyed it a lot. Nothing wrong with it at all I think I sold it to downsize for a move. This deal is good through tomorrow. I may give it a crack.

I gave it a fleeting thought last year when I was looking for an Elf-like stowaway amp for backup but moved on by. There's not much to play with, though I'll admit the price is right. Reports are it sounds pretty decent.

Ladies and Gentlemen! Hurry, hurry, hurry! Step right up. Let me introduce to you the one and only Vox Mini EarlyBeetle VX50BA available from the G-Doghouse of Music for just $349.99! Now don't push or shove there's plenty for everyone. . . . . It's got earth-shaking bass. It's got clean, clear sustain for days with a built-in Compressor. It's got Overdrive from warm fuzz to grinding snarl and everything in between. It's got a built-in True DI so you can throw away your SansAmp. It's got the highly sought after NuTube warmth with musical breakup when pushed! Yes, and it's got it all in a handy dandy little 9.8 lb.s pinky-carry package. Act now and get the chrome stand free while supplies last! Hurry!

Sizewise compared to the Elf set up that is 21Hx10Wx13D, it's near identical with 21Hx10WX12D. I'm ordering it now, at that price it's hard to not give it a shot and I can always send it back. I'm having trouble pulling the trigger on the TE combos at 500-600 bucks. I'll be staying in a small barracks room possibly with a roomie which is why the tiny size is needed. the TE 1x8 and 1x10 combo is perfect in that regard but overkill and I doubt with my other amps I will use it outside of situations like this.

363 all said and done.

So this is how it's gonna go, huh? Mocking the guy who's trying to have a little fun here on Presidents Day. May Grover Cleveland's ghost sit on you in the middle of the night. Okay, have it your way, people. Obviously, we're not attempting for the most creative way to pitch whatever's laying around in the back room. 'Dog, I'm surprised you only went $349. I figured the stand would have to move it up to at least $499! I mean, it is in pristine condition and all, plus it does have NuTube.

Okay, here's your entries so far:

1) Ashdown Tourbus 10
2) Vox VX50BA

Tough call at this point.

Who's mocking?
You said to have fun and "Let’s see how good you all are at playing pitchman."

GP, I’ve only listened to this with my phone and will catch it again later with speakers, but I thought you sounded just fine with the Ampeg rig. Even more manly than your usual, IMHO!

I know it doesn’t matter if you’re not happy with your sound, but I think you described it worse than it really was. A good player is a good player.
Thanks. It just wasn't the sound(s) I wanted. By the time that was recorded I'd sorta gotten it to a point I could live with-as long as I didn't hafta to move the thing(s).

Submitted for your approval. A throwback to a time when life was simpler, times were easy, and bass combo amps knew where they stood. no preconceived notions, no yellow-colored speakers, no modeling. Just the basics and a lot of stable power to boot. Case in point: this beauty is stable to 2 ohms and at 300 watts. Nominally, it's 210 watts into a 4-ohm load. Eight bands of EQ for you cork sniffers out there, but if you're looking for Neo here, ain't gonna find it in your 15" Black Widow speaker.

Aside from a little tolex lifting at the bottom of the cabinet and moderate wear from heavy use of the past 30 years, this baby is set to rock on for another century or two (probably will too). Bring back the memories of yesteryear to your temporal lobe by purchasing this sunken treasure for only $195 (and $80 shipping) right out of the Wisconsin heartland. And it's lightweight too, in a neanderthal sort of way. Here's a couple of pics to wet your whistle...

I'm sure if you can find this one for 500$, it is the best you can buy...

Read the manual and weep:
[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

It has DI, Effects blend after pre-amp with the special feature to blend in your favorite music while practicing via the Effects-Return-jack, It is big, it is loud, it has a clear warm hybrid sound.

Fender has bought SWR out of the market, out of jalousie, because they couldn't do it better...

Find one for 500$ and you'll have the best combo around
