Long story long. First of all, my apologies if I haven’t explained my last year. I know I’ve shared a few of the vids but maybe I never explained the project. Here goes.

I've been doing this since last year around this time. At first, it was to set a work record for the largest online ensemble and we got that. We've been interviewed by a German magazine and made their TV too.

Then the director decided since he couldn't perform live that he'd take on this project. It's pretty much made up of excellent European orchestra players but there's a number of us from elsewhere. If you go back to our early videos he shows you where we're all from.

So each month we get a new song either he chooses or we vote on, get our music and a midi recording to work with, and then I make a recording of myself playing it. I send it off to Germany by the due date and he weaves his magic. It comes out at the end of each month.

I paid $40 for the year to cover music rights and that's it. Cheaper than a nice bottle of single-malt Scotch and it keeps my sanity. My subscription runs out at the end of May and I’m not planning on re-upping or maybe select by the month which you can do.

If anyone’s interested in joining the orchestra or you’re just curious, let me know and I’ll give ya the CSO link.

Fab! And far out, Fearless Leader! Once again you make us proud on the international stage! Luckily my bandwidth is very good tonight for capturing your benevolent likeness. I miss the Christmas lights & Santa hat, but this was elegant for the time of year. BTW, do you know who the Rumbler onscreen with you is?

One of these funny intersections where a great recording amp is also a great performance amp :woot:

Working my reading skills into place (again, if they ever were?) alongside our MTftBP cohort. To me, reading skills open me up to ideas I'd not have come up with on my own. Reading skills also mean to me — in a non-covid world — a massive combo in the orchestra pit that stays there ... forever-ish. At minimum (as me talking to me, and yes there is champagne in the coffee cup) is the ability to read a chart and fake it <grin>

What's not faking it are some fusion cats up the road apace who are looking for a drummer and bass player. They're in their 50s, and are doing Jean-Luc Ponty level stuff. And talked to The Guy, who followed a similar life road. Berklee, career, kids, and Hey! I can still play this thing! deal.

A full hour's distance makes it a no-go for rehearsals, and we're both in the understanding my focus through October is with MTftBP. One never knows .... here when we are all playing in our homes, it's a good feeling to talk to other musicians as musicians.

Thanks Dog! As always, I appreciate your efforts as the official scribe and caretaker of both the Rumble and Combo Clubs. Years from now it’s gonna be a blast to look back and see all our memories. So glad your bandwidth is up for the challenge.

Yeah, I was sans the lights and Santy hat, but the mood of the song needed something a little reserved. Next month is “It’s Raining Men” (an M favorite) so I may have to break out the funky wardrobe.

As far as the other bass players, I only know one other German gentleman, and that’s not him. But we have a private forum and there’s a link for the rhythm section members. I’ll ask there and see what I can find out. Gotta hand it to your ingenuity, ‘Doggie; always looking to add members!

As an ex woodwind player, I noticed 2 alto flutes(an amazing sounding instrument), 2 'harpies'(!), and some guy playing a bass backwards. Pretty cool effort on everyone's part.

Yes. My instrument through high school and 2 years in the All Miami Youth Symphony. I was actually pretty good but there ain't a helluva lotta opportunities for a bass clarinetist in the professional world.(sigh)

Much appreciated, my bass compadre! There always seems to be at least one or two unique instruments being played. Plus, it’s the only place on the web where you’ll see as many electric basses as well as acoustic basses playing the same song!

Presuming the guy who holds the chair at orchestra ain't going anywhere soon, what remains is Ian Anderson-ing it. Imagine being the Bill Chase of bass clarinet (without plane rides).

To expand on that, people who've seen me playing in various bands of various genres of music have asked the hypothetical question "if I had my choice of gigs, all paying the same, what would I do?" I'm pretty certain I shocked some of them when I replied "Bass clarinet in a symphony orchestra", especially given my appearance at the time I was asked. Similar to this:

That's the thing. You audition for an orchestra and, assuming you pass, you wait for the person in that chair to retire-or die-then move up a spot on the waiting list.
There've been a few jazz bass clarinetists. Eric Dolphy and also bassist Marcus Miller to name two.
