The Combo Club

You have breakfast at Popeye's?

I also always get the spicy chicken, or what they consider spicy.

We're often eating non-traditional stuff for breakfast. This was today's:

Suppose it's a bit like pole dancing, if you look at it sideways and squint. Strings wrapped around a pole, except it's a captstan. The replacement Gotoh Res-O-Lite 350s on Solstice Eve have wider winding things - hey now those are capstans - than the stockers. Capstan is all nautical but this isn't a Reverend Mike Watt Wattplower with the anchor at the end of the fingerboard. An anchor. Nice way to announce a headstock diver even before you pick one up. Does it dive? Hey this is a clean thread and nothing to do with pole dancers and that's a pretty hard way to earn a living.

Which is something I may know about because there are a couple people I know who did this sort of thing. Buddhists, too, they tell me they chant as they dance and I'm like, this is a very interesting thing to tell me. Not sure what I'm going to do with this information, I've got a bass to re-string.

Because the new tuners need more string length than the old ones, it's new string day. Same strings as the old strings, but longer and there are the Fates, or the Norns as they call themselves. One measures the life thread, one weaves it into the pattern of life, and one cuts the thread to the proper length. This is more or less what I do with the the D'Addario tapes, 50-105 medium scale.

And appears to me just about right. Around and around we go, it's not the Wheel of Life or even the Wheel of Time (which is a great fantasy series until it gets too boring to read around book 7 or 8), it's tuning the strings and seems to me my bass balances better with a few grams of weight shaved off

At least I got out of the house. Had breakfast at Popeye's, tested the amp at the store, took it home (30 miles South). I do wish the issue had presented itself at the store, would have saved me an hour of driving & $5 in gasoline. . . . .

Wait, what? You have breakfast at Popeye's? My stomach hurts a little to read this. ... eating dal palak as I read this so probably no room to speak.

I have been known to have Popeye's for breakfast when Mrs. Dog is away and I'm left to my own devices. Leftover chicken, leftover pizza, whatever I can find in the fridge, is almost always better than whatever I might attempt to "cook" (and I use that term loosely).

I once saw The Original Popeye's in NOLA back in the 70s!

I once lived near a Popeye's with double drive-thru lanes! The outside lane was served by a metal basket shuttling back and forth above the inside lane.

I've heard of a Popeye's not far from here with an all-you-can-eat buffet. I can only assume that it has chicken only, and NOT the shrimp or fish, but I dunno. Gotta check that out someday.

But I've never seen or heard of a Popeye's that opened before 10:30 a.m., with most opening at 11 a.m. But, I suppose, breakfast, like any other meal for that matter, is on the clock of the consumer. Though I don't see on their website any menu items most people would consider to be breakfast-y. MMmmmm, maybe some shrimp po'boy bisquits, with a side of grits 'n gravy, and a cup of Cafe Du Monde Coffee and Chicory served Au Lait. OOooooo, mmmMMmmm . . . .

Ironically the worst Popeye's I ever had was in N'Orleans, right near Bourbon on Canal St..

Ours is 30 miles North & opens at 10:00.
I was waiting outside when they opened, because the VOX dealer also opens at 10:00.

The VOX dealer is only a 7 minute drive from Popeye's.

Café du Monde is something else. Worth at least one visit when you're in N'Orleans.

update on the VOX VX50BA
received it this morning, returned it for a RA this afternoon

I wasn't completely blown away by it, but it does sound better than my Rumble.

Got it home & it started having a blip, as if one of the caps in the power supply filter might have failed.

Made in Vietnam, BTW, but the power supply is from China. Korg owns VOX now.

It can get really loud for 50 Watts, and even with the gain cranked it's clean, until you turn on Drive. The O/D is skanky! (in a good way)
not missing low end IMHO, it even has a blurb on the card insert that says it's specially designed for bass reflex:

power supply has a strange plug, not IEC
Last time I saw or used a plug like this was from my IBM ThinkPad that I got on a corporate discount before departing my I.T. manager's job in Chiang Mai, Thailand (over a decade ago):

While driving back up to the Fender / VOX / Ibanez / PRS / D'Addario dealer I was considering just returning this amp & going for a Rumble Studio 40...

There were some things TB members had inquired about the DI, but I didn't check those. I threw it in my automobile & hit the road, to hopefully get back there while the owner was still in the shop.
Got there & of course it didn't show the same symptoms it had at home :wideyed:

Owner came over & fiddled with the Gain knob until that blip came back, only it sounded fuzzy now & not nearly as loud. He says I can return it, but I ask to warm it up a little with a comparison to the Rumble 40 they have there, and hopefully the full-blown problem I had at home will come back.
So, put them side-by-side, like I should have at home, and compared them with a SR505 with Bartolini MK1 pickups. The issue didn't return.

The VOX has more stank on it, for lack of a better term. It's just got a grungy tubey feel & sound. Not all-tube goodness, but more so than the 100% SS Rumble.
I had been concerned that the VOX wouldn't be bright enough, but that doesn't seem to be a problem.

Left it there for a return, which they'll get to on Monday morning.

Interesting read. As you can tell, there are quite a few keeping tracks of what comes of this amp. I'm liking what I hear about the NuTube, as I'm guessing that's what you're hearing, but I must admit I have had trouble with Vox products in recent years, primarily their with modeling guitar amps. Hopefully, you hit the one and only problem you'll have with this bass combo. Keep us posted.

Gallien Krueger MB108. Best bang for the buck. Sorry I sent mine back, looking for another one on Amazon...

alaska, haven't crossed your path since summer. So you have seller's remorse over the MB108, huh? Has the Ampeg-love dried up or are you still digging your combo? While I never disliked my GK combo, I haven't missed it as much as I thought I would've. I really like the Acoustic B50C I'm currently running right now. Sounded great when jamming last week, though it's not a major powerhouse. Sounded good though. The one I was not impressed with as much, my Markbass Micromark 801, may be facing the chopping block by the holidays. Clean, lifeless tone when running against the Acoustic. No pedals were being used and I know the Markbass sounds better with a little help, but my days with single 8" speakers is about done, especially if I'm not playing alone.

Yeahhhh I'm over Ampeg and back to GK. Something about the tone I love especially with my Ibanez basses....

Likely faulty tone memory informs me the GK tone is more rock n' roll than the Ampeg. If that's possible? Sort of an edge like an early 80s Peavey rig. TBH I've not played an Ibby. The brick and mortar has several including a black Mikro that looks really interesting. They carry Blackstar and not sure what else. The brick and mortar on the other side of the river carries Fender.

That's pretty amazing. I've always compared the GK sound to the 80's American made "silver fin" Peaveys! A quick story. When I was touring in the 80's I loved using Peavey stuff. Loved as you say the "edgy" rock sound it got. I used my Peavey's through the 90's. Somehow in the early 00's I switched and tried various amps. When I came upon the GK sound in around 2007 I realized that was the tone I'd been missing!

Sadly, I tried the newer Peavey's made in China. I discovered through a Peavey tech a while back that Peavey, in their wisdom, decided to change out the tone stacks on their bass amps to get a more "modern" sound out of them. Needless to say, I was sad because they no longer had that edgy rock and roll sound to them. But thank goodness for GK! Now I own two GK's-- the MB200 and MB500. I've never had to turn up the MB500 past noon and I've done outdoor shows with it. Like I said earlier, the MB108 is the one small practice combo I wish I had kept. It had that rock sound to it. As far as Ibanez, they are great basses. Played them since the 80's. The Mikro bass is nice for the size, again, remorse, I had a lefty Mikro and returned it! For me I would use it for home practice by my chair in the living room. It's compact and light and sounds great.

Good luck, hope you get what you need!

I'm not going to crap all over G-K like I want to, but try your G-K in overdrive with the mids turned up.
It's eye-opening, or at least it was for me.
Amps are a very personal taste in things. One man's crap is another man's gold. I've used my GK's for many shows over the years and they are rugged, reliable, and sound great through my Edens. I usually run my tone controls nearly flat on my amp, and slight mid boost on the active basses. I hardly use overdrive, I play classic rock and standards. Not much need for distortion for me.

Flat isn't actually flat on a G-K, but Fenders suffer from the same inherent scooping (or similar).
Aguilar is probably the only amp I've used that didn't scoop a little, or possibly the Quilter "Tone" Block.
You know, I'm not entirely sure what "scooping" is on an amp. When I play my Ibanez through my GK, it sounds like a 1985 Peavey Mark IV with 215's, cranked up. I really love the tone. Do I play with a sharp slap tone? Absolutely not. I'm an old school player but my style keeps me working all the time. I can get close to a classic Peavey cranked sound out of my GK. Maybe I lied. Maybe I've tweaked my settings. I'll have to go back and look. All I know is that the GK's sound the most like my old Peaveys from the glory days when we all had cranked amps and 215's or more.

I hope I’m not a bad influence in the g.a.s. area but I just placed a Sweetwater order for the Rumble Stage 800.

I’ve been searching for the best setup for my Sunday morning worship band. The church is fairly young and is using an amazing newly-renovated high school auditorium.

The down side is we set up everything every Sunday morning.

I started with a multi-piece set-up consisting of a 4 spc rack containing an 11 Rack and Crown xls2500 power amp. For cabs two Hartke HyDrive 112s.

I wasn’t fully happy with that setup over the ensuing weeks as it was a lot of pieces, cable connects and details for our production, because it added a lot of tasks for such a short usage period.

Now I intend to test the trusty combo strategy in that situation. If the Stage 800 gives the tonality I need both onstage and in the house system (house appears to be about 70k watts of flown mains and installed sub QSC gear), i’ll likely put the stack on the block to sell.

Because my wife’s health is in serious jeopardy, I’ve eliminated all of the work those separate components were originally purchased for, about 50-60% of my bookings. That work is just too far from home. Almost every gig I do now is 20 minutes from home and equipment needs are just different.

I still have a very nice ‘vintage’ collection including my avatar ACC 126. I only get to use my bigest stuff a couple times a year.

I’m certain to try the Rumble Stage with my retro act The Rockits and it could become my go to for my electric bands.

First impressions upon arrival...

I really love the tone.

timbre is such a subjective thing
At the local pawn shop there's a Zakk Wylde mini-stack & the player who works there was raving about how great it sounds & even tells me he *used to own it.

He cranks it up to show me & I thought it sounded horrific, LOL!
The worst part was all the buzzing, which he pretended not to notice.

Not everyone "gets" Motörhead's sounds either, such is life...

* This guy is a stellar player, but he's broke all the time. Once saw him pawn a guitar to pay for diapers. Kids cost a lot of money.
