The Combo Club

Ok- unboxing and test drive scheduled for tomorrow!! I’m at home with the Boyz, so they will undoubtedly be a part of this- must raise them Tough!!:woot::bassist::bassist::bassist:
Another gratuitous SW ad of the box…View attachment 4313334

Can this shake pics off the walls??? How horrified can a six and nine year old boy be??:eek:. Just how far out can Daddy get???
Ummmm. Don’t worry…not far anymore!
Cool! Can’t wait to see!

Had to take a trip to the big city this week, so I went to Long and McQquad. I tried a SG bass, which I always wanted to try, and a 75th anniversary Pbass. I tried them through the new Traynor 100 watt vibe head. It was fun! I walked out only with a pack of three patch cords, which was the plan all along.

Anyway, spotted the bass below. It looked very nice, but I didn't get a chance to play it. Thought of GP.

Doc, you probably made his night; the Epi and a Rumble below it! How did ya like the P and the SG? A couple of different types of basses, but each an icon. Patch cords nothing, you had fun and that’s all that matters.

PS: did ya see any of the new Ampeg combos?

Edit: I just spotted the Viola bass. A whole bunch of meh IMHO. Had one and couldn’t sell it quick enough. We never bonded though it’s close to an exact copy of the Rogue. :rollno:

Looks like a row of Rumblers...

Looks real purty. Unfortunately(or perhaps not), the Embassy is on the back burner for awhile due to unforseen expenses.:banghead::greedy:

Didn't the scientists here determine the proper match for a violin bass is a Rumble combo?

What??? Where are my papers? I have notes on this disproving that the two should ever be in the same room together! Where’s my lab coat?

M, the Canadians (well, Doc Intrepid) don't use Rumbles at all...look at the pictures! Nary a Fender to be found.

Both the Fender and the Gibson were great, but I preferred the Gibson. I have never been able to bond with a Precision neck. I liked the way the SG felt, but at a price of nearly 1900 CAD it is just isn't going to happen. At that price a bass has to be your number one, and I don't think anything can knock my 68 500/1 from that position. Love that neck and it's tone! I even liked the tone of the SG more than the Precision, which is TB blasphemy.

I didn't try a Rumble. I was a bit rushed, due to parking, and my five year-old was running around like it was a McDonald's playground. At one point he grabbed a bass of the rack! So I only tried three basses: the Precision, the SG and a Viola. I also didn't bond with the Viola. Even though it shares some design characteristics with the 500/1 they are not the same creature. I have used a Rumble at the open mic with some of my Hofners. It was good, but I'd have to spend more time with it.

Great review Doc, thanks. I was mistaken then calling the bass an Epi. I thought the price tag read five-something, but the $1,900 price tag would surely offer evidence it’s a Gibson.

As far as price, I agree that almost two grand is a tad steep for a bass, but look at all those who pay even more for an instrument. Maybe I’d sound three times better, or the bass would last three times longer, but I doubt it.

My daughter was over today and I took her to the man cave to catch my latest recordings and she loved them. Yeah, I know that she owes me for all the formula from years ago, but that’s enough for me.

If my kidlings are happy with my noodlings, then I don’t need a $2,000 bass to convey those feelings. “Your Cash ain’t Nothing but Trash” sounds just as good on my Players P as it would if I was using a Fodera! (Side note: okay, maybe the $2,000 Hofner Ed Sullivan 500/1 lefty violin bass, but I tell ya that’s it!!!)

As for the Viola, I’m not surprised. The body, if I remember, was bigger, the v/t controls layout wasn’t nearly as versatile as I’d hoped it’d be, and we just never hit it off. BTW, built in the exact same factory as my Rogue, but nothing close to being the same.

Final note: Doc, didn’t ya love the fact your child grabbed a bass, ready to spend some coin? I’ll bet it was a Hofner! :hyper:

There was a plethora of basses. So they had some Epiphone EB1s and EB3s. I would have tried those too if I had more time. Leif (my son) grabbed one of those Squier mini-Ps. I would have bought him one, but I know Hofner is coming out with a new mini-Violin bass. It is a reasonable price and meant to be a travel instrument. I am going to order one of those soon.

OMG, Doctor, that is the niftiest little bass I’ve ever seen. You must be Leif that bass over an old Squier. It even has the teacup knobs! I wonder how it sounds? Sheesh, the price isn’t even that bad. Maybe I should buy GP one of them so he’ll be nicer when talking Ampeg. :woot:

Mayhaps you could scope out the nationality of a lot of The Rumble Club members... ;)

Sorry, I’m too busy handing out jobs to other people, though I do see merit in your idea. I know we have some European members, and there’s the Aussie or two, but I can’t give you an exact number.

Jazz, if you’re interested, I hereby commander you to be our club’s member Shepard where you find out, through individual contact, where everyone’s from. Sounds like the perfect job for you and it’ll be of great importance to the club.

I’ll run a roster list later today so you can locate the 238 or 239 individuals on it. In fact, you begin with me. I’m from the good old US of A!

That’s one...:hyper:

Best I can do. TalkBass mapped !!!

Sadly, it looks as if TalkBass Mapped is no longer...bit the dust...dried up, and blew away. That's too bad because you're right, that would give us some small measure of everyone's origins. Oh well, back to knocking on doors. Jazzer, if you're ever interested my office door is always open. Actually, it's because we took off all the locks since that incident with RR, that gypsy lady, and the tuna, Halloween 2019. Nevermind asking...:lock:

That being said, here's the Combo Club's latest roster. As always, please find your name and do a little giggle. I'm shooting for 300 members by the end of 2021. Let's make some noise and bring the newbies in!

Hey now, I explained this already, she was not, "that gypsy lady," she's my wife in her famous gypsy costume! I know, hard to believe some lunk like me could win the heart of someone so intelligent, witty, and delightful, but I swear it's true! :woot:

As far as the unfortunate events of the evening...there was whisky involved...and dancing...:sorry:
