Evening all! NAD for me! Gave up gigging a couple of years ago and last week I finally got real and sold my GK MB800 and Barefaced Super Twin.
Put some money in the savings and bought myself a GK MB112.
I’m amazed how great it sounds and how loud it is for 200w. Lots of tonal variety and I’m liking the contour switch which is funny because I never used the contour knob on my MB800!
This thing is great for home and would be fine for open mic nights etc. If I ever join a band again I can always buy a powered cab to go with it.
Very pleased with this little fellow!

I have small guitar combos already (15 and 30 wats) and can get pretty much every sound I want out of them. But for small bass combos I've heard different things, that's why I ask this..

Welcome, BW, to the Combo Club! I am your host and guardian of the place we call home. I know a few people have replied to your query, but I wondered if you felt your post was answered or not. As far as I'm concerned, there's nothing like a gig-ready rig to get your sound out there, but with today's technology, I do think you can make a pretty good run at literally every sound out there for the bass guitarist in a smaller package. Electric guitarists came before us with all the available gadgets to sound like whomever you want to, but we've also seen improvements of late as well.

The new Fender Stage 800 and Studio 40 combos, from what we've heard from club members are out of this world. They're a one-handed schlep into your practice room or recording studio, and I think that's what you were getting at when you asked a couple of days ago. There are quite a few ways to achieve the tonal varieties, whether it be a combo, separates, pedals, or computer-based. It's truly an exciting time to be a musician as the 21st Century unfolds. Now if there was only more time to play!

Using it with my Markbass cmd121p combo with the head unit replaced by Markbass 800 tube amp for a stereo mini-rig of doom.

woody, this and the other images you have up are absolutely menacing! I've never seen a Markbass product look intimidating until I spied upon your MB/Mesa creation. No doubt, I'll bet it sounds terrific.

I hear ya, Doc, but as a fellow scholar, I'm sure you've been tempted to throw your hard-earned investments into the fray once in a while. No wait, you're post=secondary...way too smart for what I did!

I agree with ya though, the club is bustling with interesting, yet sane experiments where tonal bliss is the ultimate achievement. This Vox-thing you boys have going has got me palpitating, and no, it's not because I'm a combo down right now (yes, it does). I've been doing some reading this vacation on the Nutube experience, and there are as many folks who say it's baloney as some who say it's legit and remind those negative nellies that's what people thought of DSP back in the day. Been an interesting read, but now I wanna hear for myself.

The comment made by Doggie and KbD, if I remember, and maybe you too, Doc, is that you really can't tell if the Nutube is enhancing your sound one way or another. I remember G-Dog saying that for sure. I'm thinking it might come down to lots of knob-twisting and messing around to find that advantage. From what I've read, the gain has to be up quite a bit and I'm wondering, except for KbD who seems to thrive on gain for his sound, people are running it too clean and not making the tube work. Of course, if it is BS then it doesn't matter, right? So you've had some time with it, what are your thoughts? Does your micro-amp offer you something to your ears that your Vox combo doesn't?

Doggie, how much weight are we talking? I've got cornstarch all over myself and can't look it up right now. Boy, that's truly a beauty. I could see that sitting in a corner of my study. Then all I'd need is a study.

Well, I'm not GDog, but according to specs, it's 50W, 75#, 4x10s and requires numerous boxes of Wheaties tm consumed to move.

The silverface Fender Bass Ten, from the 1970s, was a mere 75 lb.s for 4x10s and 50 watts. But, perhaps Morrighan was right, that does seem a bit much for just one top handle, especially these days. So, how about this?

A hefty 24 lb.s for 12 watts and a 12" speaker. A little more weight than a Rumble 40!

I can't imagine dragging four tens around in a single enclosure, along with an amp too. The Bassmaster would be more to my liking and I have seen some for sale on Reverb. It's just for the price of nostalgia you can buy a whole lot of modern! To each his or her own.

So who's signing up to be M's roadie? Will I still be able to destroy cheap combos in my spare time?
