"Heavier than" this?Recovery from The Thing That's Going Around runs apace. Today marks the first day in two weeks of actual practice (pending completion of this post). It's shocking how hard it hits, even fully vaccinated. Right, the bass, then.
As is well and as it should be, broke out the StingRay a few minutes ago, plugged into the BG-400 combo. After the dog let me, that is. The dog is big enough to nudge my plucking hand, and knows how to lie down between me and the music stand. Dog > bass
there I said it. He made me.
Right, the StingRay. And the combo. Intrepid friends recall the new strings are GHS Brite Flats. That puts the bass in as near- showroom condition as possible. To really duplicate the Brand New Bass feeling I need the Peavey TNT 100 and its 15 inch extension cab. The two of them, heavier than [strong word].
That Pyramid knob on the Peavey is something I never really understood. Just turned it until I heard something I liked. What I liked was usually loud with two six-stringers. So, technically, never loud enough ....
The verdict? These combos four decades down the road are so [strong word] good compared to The Good Old Days that you'd have to be a bit touched to want the old stuff back. IMO.
The Brite Flats are kind of interesting. I like the G and I never like the G on a new set of stringsMy 'Ray sounds huge

GP, if you were up in these parts this weekend you'd have to bring your long undies for an outdoor gig because the highs are topping out in the fifties with lows in the thirties and a frost advisory for tonight. Otherwise, it was a beautiful fall day here!

BTW, you are so correct about post-C stamina. Last night was the first evening I had even a smidgen of energy to want to stay up a bit and play. I did enjoy getting out today and sweeping acorns off the front stoop and yelling at some kid to get outta my yard. Then I found out it was the mailman. Hey, I'm new to this home-thing in the middle of the day!

this is what remained of that 15 inch cab on its way to ... I don't know what afterlife it deserves?
I'll say it went to the landfill and leave the speculation up to you.
I don't do shorts either. My legs are so skinny, I don't want nurses following me around with wheelchairs waiting for me to break a leg...
Drummers have an unwritten rider in their contracts that they can always wear shorts. The only time I would wear pants was when I was also wearing a tie and jacket. Talk about fun...
I speculate that as the cab gets tossed by the workers on top of the trash heap, it rolls over and is finally stopped by a Peavey Century 120 amp, also having been discarded by a former owner. Then, by way of Mississippi Magic, the two connect, turn on, and begin playing "Free Bird" throughout the landfill.
And told me you'd be shocked if that actually happened...

Will never be able to un-see Terry Bozzio in "shorts". They aren't shorts
A gown is fairly standard for any upright bass gig. I don't have an UB and I don't have that gig. But I'd be lying if I said I don't enjoy dressing for the stage. Even if my stage is a Webcam and a Zoom.

Oh wait, I can. I'm feeling a lot better compared to earlier this week. At this rate, I should be hopefully annoying elementary students by Tuesday. I continue to have a slight cough and still can't taste or smell (a + when eating #2's Spam and Artichoke Surprise), but played bass yesterday and enjoyed it. Thanks again to all who wished me well over the past week, it helped a lot.
Does anyone have a gig or jam session slated for this weekend? If so, what will you be using for bass and amplification? Obviously, I'm not, but got back to recording last night and have scheduled myself another tune before the weekend is over. Running my Rocket Bass 112 into my interface was about all I needed to sound good. Okay, a little compression and what is becoming an always-on button, the RB's SGT. Far superior to the previous version's Scrambler circuit, it's more pleasing to the ear without the digital fakeness. Give it a try if you haven't yet.
Let's hear from the membership this week. I'm still buzzed hearing from FirewalZ on Wednesday.
I am jamming on Sunday and may go to the open mic Saturday night. I will use the 68 Hofner for sure and likely my Vox contraption into the board directly.

Speaking of heavy. That’s me circa 1985. That cabinet my stuff is sitting on is a Traynor bass cab monster. Had a 18” reflex speaker dual ports. On the front was two 6” speakers on a baffle between the ports. That was paired with a Traynor mono block B 400 watt monster amp that sat on top. The amp had to weigh at least 50lbs. That cabinet was easily 100 lbs. all 3/4“ plywood build. It got to heavy to haul around. I pulled of the tolex. Put wood veneer on it and turned it in to a piece of furniture. Built a new grill. Put it in my studio to hold stuff while I played through it. Weirdly I wish I still had that.

Retirement Update: I’ve got a “new” plan (about 10 hours old) where a Hofner bass and Ampeg tube head are packaged. I’ll PM ya this weekend.
