I've always counted 7s as 4 + 3, am I doing it wrong?

They can also be counted as 3+4 depending on what the composer wanted.

Yea, that's very common - or they can be mathematically even divisions of 7 where every note is equal length (super hard to do, but doable)... depends on when it was composed, the style, and I guess really, just wahtever the composer wanted and/or whatever the performer likes.

I mean, I tend to do things in the most computationally accurate way, first... even though it's more challenging. Most folks don't do that, I've found... which makes me a little odd I guess LoL - but it's the software engineer in me I guess maybe.

Possibly also some personality oddities in me....

The 7 tuplet is the odd duck. The mnemonic is "Gina Lollabrida", but that doesn't resonate for me. What help me internalize the 7 tup was descending or ascending 7 note scales, changing the starting note on each pass.

Break out your metrome and set it slow like 40 bpm. Find a 8 note pentatonic pattern you can play in the space of one beat. Then take one note out and play evenly over the beat.

Voila.

Imo, learning a time signature with a base of whatever tuplet is the best way to internalize that tuplet. Getting comfortable with 3/4 internalizes triplets, getting comfortable with 5/4 internalizes pentuplets, and most importantly for the OP, getting comfortable with 7/4 internalizes septuplets.

I'm reasonably comfortable playing in 7/4 or 7/8, but I can't play septuplets. A groove with seven beats in a bar is quite different to dividing one beat into seven. (I'm not arguing about the maths, I'm talking about how it feels.)

So to be clear, this is DIFFERENT than 7/8
So thinking 3+4 ( or my goto is 2+2+3 grouping) isn’t really appropriate for an actual ‘tuplet. It seems like splitting hairs but I can immediately think of some handfuls of contexts where it matters, or at least is practical enough to be philosophically different

septuplet =\= 7/8 so it shouldn’t really be 3+4 etc
