80's were great if you were into style over substance, for sure - culturally, musically, politically, whatever. I don't find hair band songs about screwing and partyin and such 'offensive'. I just think they're stupid and juvenile. I'm not 14.

The bands I liked in the 70s stopped taking the music seriously in the 80s. Going for the cute hair, costumes and three minute songs about nothing.

And what I'm seeing nowadays is a lot of people not taking ANYTHING seriously, especially the things that most need to be taken seriously.

Look at some Louis Cole music and videos, same for Thundercat, I don't think they take themselves seriously. I can take take any argument about the 80's but not this one. Ahem, would you be in your forties ?

Heidecker is a comedian (first and foremost) and musician. Can't say I enjoy his music, but wouldn't call him a layman. He definitely picked these basslines just to mess with the contestant. Surprised that Seventeen bassline is so good. Very entertaining.

The guys in Winger are all bad ass!

I would say that's a guitarist's idea of typical rock bass lines

Until they pick up a bass (and a lot of them think they can play bass) when they play a bass as they would a guitar only an octave down.

Holy crap. I think a lot of folks here are reading WAAAAAAAY too much into this (sort of perpetuating a stereotype about bass players). It's just meant to be funny.

I'm guessing they're not familiar with Thundercat's particular brand of humor (I think the "Dragonball Durag" music video is a pretty good test - if you find it funny, then you get it). I think the guy is hilarious. Every interview he does makes me LOL, he has a contagious laughter.

BTW I'm 43 and can't stand anything '80s, so don't paint us all with the same brush!

Admittedly, I don't listen to a lot of modern music, but is Thundercat really considered "one of the greatest bassist's in the world?" Never heard of him.

"One of the greatest bassists in the world" is obviously very subjective, but I think he's had a big impact on young kids getting into bass. I can hear his bass lines being played often by other people, either when I give lessons or at jam sessions. He does have chops but also has very nice articulation and great timing in my opinion. He also composes music and is a bandleader too. I don't consider myself as his fan but I like him a lot and I think he is a very unique musician.

I'm 52 so I think I can have an opinion about the 80s, I was there unfortunately (though there was good things in the British post punk scene, that's about all there was actually). And obviously I don't paint everyone with same brush less I paint an auto portrait (although I know many people my age or in their 40ies that fit in the painting )
