I totally agree. The sound samples in this video won't inspire anybody to take up the bass.
...and yet in the context of the mix, the sound is perfect IMHO. Maybe the soloed sound does not inspire people to play bass, but there is something for bassist to learn about tone, our role in music, and how seriously we take ourselves. I would be thrilled to have a fraction of a cent of the revenue each of those songs generated.
Ultimately I think I was born to play bass, so no inspiration was needed.
This line from the "Pretty Woman" has stuck with me through the years:
People's reaction to opera the first time they see it is very dramatic. They either love it or hate it. If they love it, they will always love it. If they don't, they may learn to appreciate it, but it will never become part of their soul.
The idea is you are either born to love opera or your not. I think the same is true of being a bass player.
Something I found humorous in video: Years ago Michael Anthony was in a Mesa ad and was quoted as inferring the bass should not sound like a well executed fart (see quote in red rectangle below). IMHO the Van Halen bass tracks in the video sound rather like a
really nasty fart to me

. Seriously man, if your farts sound like that, there's a problem

.
Cheers
